Palinološke raziskave na snežniškem pogorju = Palynological research on the Snežnik Mts.

The paper deals with the history of forests on the Sneznik Mts. by means of pollen analysis of soil profiles from the present day spruce forests, and sediment from the peat bog on Gomance.The soils ...in spruce forests are shallow,which indicates little age. This is also confirmed by the prevailing pollen of pine and pioneer broadleaf trees in the lower horizons, and the predominant spruce pollen in the upper ones. We therefore suspect that forest on these locations was formerly destroyed for pastures, and when these were abandoned, reforestation took place through the pioneer phase to today's spruce phase.Pollen analysis of sediment from peat bog on Gomance gave a very general picture of the dynamics of succession in forests here in the Late Glacial and Holocene, i.e. in approximately 13000 years. The development of forests on the Sneznik Mts. for the most part occurred similarly as in the Alps, except that spruce was less frequent in both the glacial and post-glacial periods. In contrast, beech, especially in the later period, was the predominant element.
