Spatial segregation of Roma population is a dynamic category that changes its characteristics over time. This paper investigates changes in indicators of spatial segregation of the Roma national ...minority in Međimurje, the northernmost county of the Republic of Croatia. The spatial analysis of Roma in the researched area, based on the last three consecutive population censuses, indicates changes in the Roma distribution patterns. Through the last two inter-census periods, spatial dispersion of the Roma population is noticeable as a beginning of more intensive spatial integration process. On the other hand, quantitative indicators point to the conclusion that spatial segregation as a phenomenon and fundamental feature of Roma population is increasing.
The paper analyses recent nationally differentiated natural demographic trends, age structure and changes in fertile contingents of the population of Međimurje County. The results of the analysis and ...projections of Roma population point to the beginning of the changing process of the national structure of the Međimurje County characterized by the increasing share of Roma national minority and the diminishing share of the majority population. The analyzed indicators point to the intensification of the initiated process and significant changes in the national structure of Međimurje County in the future.

The Roma are the national minority that experiences the highest level of social distance in Croatia. With aim of better understanding the social structure of the parts of Croatia’s that are inhabited ...by Roma, the level of social distance between Roma and selected groups was investigated using the classic Bogardus scale performed on a sample of 203 members of the Roma community from Međimurje County, the City of Zagreb, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The results of the research indicate significant differences in the level of social distance among different sub-ethnic Roma groups in Croatia. There are large regional differences in the level of social distance of Roma living in different parts of Croatia. A significant level of mutual social distance was also observed between the two large subethnic Roma groups in Croatia, the Bayash Roma and Roma who speak the standard Romani language. Great variations were also noted in social distance towards the majority ethnic group in the Republic of Croatia: Croats.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the growth dynamics of 20 larger Croatian cities, macro-regional and regional centres, in order to indicate changes in their competitiveness. The analyses were ...carried out for three relevant periods: the period of growth before the global recession (2001-2008), the period of the global recession (2009-2014) and the recovery period of the Croatian economy (2015-2019). Employment is one of the most important indicators of economic growth, so employment dynamics data were used in the analyses. The paper points to differences in employment growth of individual Croatian cities compared to the national average and seeks to determine whether this growth is the result of the action of structural (exogenous) factors or local (endogenous) factors. Therefore, a shift-share analysis was carried out, resulting in calculations of the regional, structural, and local factors. It found that in the years before the recession, larger cities had on average much stronger employment growth than the Croatian average. In the pre-recession period, the local factor played an extremely important role in shaping employment growth; in most cities, it was more significant than the structural factor. When the recession hit, larger cities saw a drop in employment of about the same intensity as at the state level, while in the post-recession period they had a slightly slower recovery compared to the Croatian average. In the recession period, there was a sharp decline in the local competitiveness of cities, whose significant recovery in the post-recession period has so far been absent. The number of cities that are above the national average in terms of employment dynamics was decreasing. Above-average growth was achieved during all three relevant periods only Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik, and Varaždin. In all three periods, Split, Zadar, Slavonski Brod, and Varaždin had local competitive advantages.

Prvi rezultati popisa stanovništva 2021. donose podatke o broju kućanstava, broju stanova, broju popisanih osoba i broju stanovnika na razini naselja. Uspoređujući podatke za romska naselja Parag i ...Piškorovec u Međimurskoj županiji s podacima prethodnog popisa, uočava se značajan porast njihova broja stanovnika. Međutim, kad se u obzir uzmu podaci prirodnog kretanja stanovništva, u navedenim naseljima dolazi se do zaključka da je u njima popisom zabilježeno puno manje stanovnika od očekivanog. Kao odgovor na pitanje zašto je popisom zabilježeno manje stanovnika od očekivanog, moguća su dva zaključka. Prvi zaključak je da u navedenim naseljima tijekom provedbe popisa stanovništva nisu popisani svi stanovnici. Drugi zaključak ukazuje na moguće značajne promjene u migracijskim obilježjima romskog stanovništva, odnosno pojavu intenzivne emigracije iz najvećih romskih naselja.
Cilj ovoga rada jest povezivanje socijalne distance s fizičkom, odnosno pokušaj da se odgovori na pitanje ovisi li stupanj (ne)prihvaćanja Roma o njihovoj prostornoj udaljenosti/ blizini. ...Istraživanje je provedeno u Međimurju, regiji gdje su Romi najzastupljenija manjinska zajednica. Dobiveni rezultati pokazuju da se u uvjetima male fizičke međusobne distance, koja osigurava češći međuetnički kontakt, blizina Roma čak smanjuje stupanj prihvaćanja socijalnih odnosa s njima. Istraživanje je uključilo i mjerenje socijalne distance Roma Bajaša prema određenim drugim etničkim skupinama. Rezultati pokazuju visoki stupanj spremnosti Bajaša na socijalne kontakte s Hrvatima, ali istovremeno i izrazito visoku socijalnu distancu prema svim drugim ponuđenim etničkim skupinama, uključujući Lacatare –pripadnike drugih romskih skupina. Kako u uzorku većinskog stanovništva tako i u uzorku Roma može se zapaziti veća razina spremnosti na prijateljske nego na susjedske odnose. Ta inverzija na Bogardusovoj skali socijalnih odnosa, kada se prostorni javni kontakt prihvaća teže nego intimniji i osobniji kontakt, nesumnjivo čini izglednim održavanje visokog stupnja prostorne segregacije Roma.

Cilj rada je istražiti razvojnu dinamiku dvadeset većih hrvatskih gradova, makroregionalnih i regionalnih centara, kako bi se ukazalo na promjene njihovih konkurentskih sposobnosti. Analize su ...provedene za tri relevantna razdoblja: razdoblje rasta prije globalne recesije (2001. – 2008.), razdoblje globalne recesije (2009. – 2014.) i razdoblje oporavka hrvatskoga gospodarstva (2015. – 2019.). Zaposlenost je jedan od najznačajnijih pokazatelja gospodarskog rasta pa su u analizama upotrijebljeni podaci o dinamici zaposlenosti. U radu se upućuje na razlike u rastu zaposlenosti pojedinih hrvatskih gradova u odnosu na nacionalni prosjek te se nastoji utvrditi je li taj rast rezultat djelovanja strukturnih (egzogenih) čimbenika ili lokalnih (endogenih) čimbenika. Shift-share analizom dobiveni su izračuni regionalnog, strukturnog i lokalnog čimbenika. Utvrđeno je da su u godinama prije recesije veći gradovi u prosjeku imali znatno snažniji rast zaposlenosti od hrvatskog prosjeka. Lokalni čimbenik u predrecesijskom razdoblju imao je izrazito važnu ulogu u formiranju rasta zaposlenosti, u većini gradova značajniju od strukturnog čimbenika. Već su gradovi u recesiji zabilježili pad zaposlenosti približno jednakog intenziteta kao na državnoj razini, dok se u postrecesijskom razdoblju opaža njihov nešto sporiji oporavak od hrvatskog prosjeka. U recesijskom se razdoblju dogodio snažan pad lokalne konkurentnosti gradova čiji je značajniji oporavak u postrecesijskom razdoblju zasad izostao. Sve je manje gradova koji su po dinamici zaposlenosti iznad nacionalnog prosjeka. Iznadprosječan razvoj ostvarili su tijekom svih triju relevantnih razdoblja jedino Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik i Varaždin. U svim trima razdobljima lokalne konkurentske prednosti posjedovali su Split, Zadar, Slavonski Brod i Varaždin.

The paper explores the role of the Roma in the demographic resources of Medimurje County. Given that Medimurje County has slightly more favourable demographic characteristics than the Croatian ...average, the influence of the Roma on certain variables of the demographic resource index is examined. To what extent do Roma people, the largest ethnic minority in Medimurje County, affect the total population natural growth? Is the above average fertility and natural growth a direct consequence of demographic characteristics of Roma people and if so, what implications follow? The analysis includes specific structures of Roma people that contribute to understanding of the role of the Roma in demographic resources of Medimurje County. The results obtained suggest that the Roma, despite their relatively small number in the total population, largely affect the natural growth rate in Medimurje County and some of its municipalities. Ethnically differentiated characteristics of natural growth contribute to the ethnic substitution of the population of Medimurje County. On the other hand, Roma people have a negative impact on some structural characteristics of the total population. In the light of seeing the population as a demographic resource, the paper points to a growing need for urgent integration of the Roma. Adapted from the source document.
