BACKGROUNDChronic liver disease, particularly cirrhosis, is associated with worse outcomes in patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). AIMTo assess outcomes of COVID-19 infection ...among patients with pre-existing hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis. METHODSThis multicenter, retrospective cohort study included all cases of confirmed co-infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and chronic hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis who were admitted to six hospitals (Al-Sahel Hospital, Al-Matareya Hospital, Al-Ahrar Hospital, Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital, Al-Gomhoreya Hospital, and the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute) affiliated with the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes in Egypt. Patients were recruited from May 1, 2020, to July 31, 2020. Demographic, laboratory, imaging features, and outcomes were collected. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to detect factors affecting mortality. RESULTSThis retrospective cohort study included 125 patients with chronic hepatitis C and COVID-19 co-infection, of which 64 (51.20%) had liver cirrhosis and 40 (32.00%) died. Fever, cough, dyspnea, and fatigue were the most frequent symptoms in patients with liver cirrhosis. Cough, sore throat, fatigue, myalgia, and diarrhea were significantly more common in patients with liver cirrhosis than in non-cirrhotic patients. There was no difference between patients with and without cirrhosis regarding comorbidities. Fifteen patients (23.40%) with liver cirrhosis presented with hepatic encephalopathy. Patients with liver cirrhosis were more likely than non-cirrhotic patients to have combined ground-glass opacities and consolidations in CT chest scans: 28 (43.75%) vs 4 (6.55%), respectively (P value < 0.001). These patients also were more likely to have severe COVID-19 infection, compared to patients without liver cirrhosis: 29 (45.31%) vs 11 (18.04%), respectively (P value < 0.003). Mortality was higher in patients with liver cirrhosis, compared to those with no cirrhosis: 33 (51.56%) vs 9 (14.75%), respectively (P value < 0.001). All patients in Child-Pugh class A recovered and were discharged. Cirrhotic mortality occurred among decompensated patients only. A multivariate regression analysis revealed the following independent factors affecting mortality: Male gender (OR 7.17, 95%CI: 2.19-23.51; P value = 0.001), diabetes mellitus (OR 4.03, 95%CI: 1.49-10.91; P value = 0.006), and liver cirrhosis (OR 1.103, 95%CI: 1.037-1.282; P value < 0.0001). We found no differences in liver function, COVID-19 disease severity, or outcomes between patients who previously received direct-acting antiviral therapy (and achieved sustained virological response) and patients who did not receive this therapy. CONCLUSIONPatients with liver cirrhosis are susceptible to higher severity and mortality if infected with COVID-19. Male gender, diabetes mellitus, and liver cirrhosis are independent factors associated with increased mortality risk.
Multidrug resistance poses a global threat to the poultry industry and public health, so the direction towards eliminating the use of antibiotics and finding alternatives is a vital step to solve ...this problem. Thyme microemulsion (10% oil/water) had nanodrop size 28.65 ± 0.89 nm, with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.28 with greater homogeneity. It showed IC50 > 100 ug/ml on cytotoxicity assay and 14 active components by GC-Mass. The study was carried out using 210 Cobb chicks divided into fourteen groups. The infected groups were challenged using two Salmonella Enteritidis multidrug resistance (MDR) and Salmonella Enteritidis sensitive strains to the sulpha-trimethoprim antibiotic. The challenged inoculum was 1 × 109 CFU of Salmonella Enteritidis by oral route. The MIC treatments doses were 1 ml/liter water for thyme oil and thyme microemulsion and 33.34 mg/kg b.wt sulfadiazine for 5 days. The results showed that both thymol oil (0.1%) and microemulsion (0.01%) are able to decrease the count of Salmonella Enteritidis in cecal content and fecal dropping and the mortality rates after five days of treatment. In addition, thyme oil and microemulsion had no pathological alteration on chickens’ tissues that were collected two weeks after giving the treatment. By the robust HPLC method, the SDZ and TMP residues in tissues of infected groups treated with Cotrimazine® + thyme oil microemulsion had a slight significant economic impact (P<0.05) compared to Cotrimazine® alone. In conclusion, thymol oil and microemulsion could be an alternative economic choice for multidrug resistance Salmonella Enteritidis treatment in poultry farms.

We classified all SCD patients (n = 90) into two groups: Group I, 45 children (s.ferritin ≥ 938 ng/mL) and Group II, 45 children (s.ferritin < 938 ng/mL). A total of 55 children, age and sex matched, participated as a control group. Malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrite, s.iron, s.total iron-binding capacity (sTIBC), transferrin saturation %, s.ferritin, s.hepcidin, and hepcidin mRNA gene expression were assessed.
Among SCD BT-dependent patients (>3 times/year), 63% were from Group I and 37% from Group II, p < .01. The two patient groups had significantly lower s.hepcidin and hepcidin gene expression than controls (p < .001). TIBC, s.iron, s.ferritin, transferrin saturation %, ferritin/hepcidin ratio, and MDA levels were higher among SCD patients than controls (p < .001). Group I had higher mean level of ferritin/hepcidin ratio and MDA than Group II (p < .01). The higher level of MDA and increased frequency of BT were the significant predicting risk factors for IO (p < .05). A receiver-operating characteristic curve indicates that MDA is the outstanding significant biomarker for high level of s.ferritin with subsequent IO progression.
MDA may serve as a biomarker of oxidative stress and IO in SCD patients. This result paid attention for urgent initiation of antioxidant and chelation therapy on detecting increased MDA level.

Our study aimed to investigate the possible role of miR-150 in de novo adult AML and the impact of its level on survival, and we used
analysis to predict the main target genes involved in miR-150 mediated cancer pathway.
We evaluated miR-150 expression profiling assay using TaqMan primer probes RT-PCR in the plasma of 50 adult AML patients, before the start of treatment and at day 28 of treatment, along with 20 normal adult control samples. miR-16 was used as an endogenous reference for standardisation. Follow-up of patients during treatment at day 28 of induction chemotherapy and after one year was done.
In this study, we found a significantly lower level of miR-150 in AML patients when compared to controls (p = 0.005) with 0.62 fold change than in healthy controls. Patients were divided into two groups: the low miR-150 group (miR-150 < 1) and the high miR-150 group (miR-150 > 1). A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups regarding initial total leukocytic count and initial PB blast count while for the TLC, HB and PLT count at follow up. No difference in the overall survival between the low and the high miR-150 groups could be demonstrated.
Our results suggest that miR-150 functions as a tumour suppressor and gatekeeper in inhibiting cell transformation and that its downregulation is required for leukemogenesis.

The primary purpose of recent research on solar cells is to achieve a higher power conversion efficiency with stable characteristics. To push the developments of photovoltaic (PV) technology, tandem ...solar cells are being intensively researched, as they have higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than single-junction cells. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are recently used as a top cell of tandem solar cells thanks to their tunable energy gap, high short circuit current, and low cost of fabrication. One of the main challenges in PSCs cells is the stability issue. Carbon perovskite solar cells (CPSCs) without a hole transport material (HTM) presented a promising solution for PSCs’ stability. The two-terminal monolithic tandem solar cells demonstrate the commercial tandem cells market. Consequently, all the proposed tandem solar cells in this paper are equivalent to two-terminal monolithic tandem devices. In this work, two two-terminal tandem solar cells are proposed and investigated using the SCAPS-1D device simulator. Carbon perovskite solar cell (CPSC) without hole transport material (HTM) is used as the top cell with a new proposed gradient doping in the perovskite layer. This proposal has led to a substantial enhancement of the stability issue known to be present in carbon perovskite cells. Moreover, a higher PCE, exceeding 22%, has been attained for the proposed CPSC. Two bottom cells are examined, Si and CIGS-GeTe solar cells. The suggested CPSC/Si and CPSC/CIGS-GeTe tandem solar cells have the advantage of having just two junctions, which reduces the complexity and cost of solar cells. The performance parameters are found to be improved. In specific, the PCEs of the two proposed cells are 19.89% and 24.69%, respectively.

A compact, single-layer microstrip rectenna for dedicated far-field RF wireless power-harvesting applications is presented. The proposed rectenna circuit configurations including multiband triple ...L-Arms patch antenna with diamond slot ground are designed to resonate at 10, 13, 17, and 26 GHz with 10 dB impedance bandwidths of 0.67, 0.8, 2.45, and 4.3 GHz, respectively. Two rectifier designs have been fabricated and compared, a half wave rectifier with a shunted Schottky diode and a voltage doubler rectifier. The measured and simulated maximum conversion efficiencies of the rectifier using the shunted diode half-wave rectifier are 41%, and 34%, respectively, for 300 Ω load resistance, whereas they amount to 50% and 43%, respectively, for voltage doubler rectifier with 650 Ω load resistance. Compared to the shunted rectifier circuit, it is significant to note that the voltage doubler rectifier circuit has higher efficiency. Both rectifier’s circuits presented are tuned for a center frequency of 10 GHz and implemented using 0.81 mm thick Rogers (RO4003c) substrate. The overall size of the antenna is 16.5 × 16.5 mm2, and the shunted rectifier is only 13.3 × 8.2 mm2 and 19.7 × 7.4 mm2 for the voltage doubler rectifier. The antenna is designed and simulated using the CST Microwave Studio Suite (Computer Simulation Technology), while the complete rectenna is simulated using Agilent’s ADS tool with good agreement for both simulation and measurements.

Background
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have long been known for their ability to regenerate tissue. Cigarette smoking is one environmental risk factor that may impair the performance of MSCs. ...Electronic cigarettes have recently become a popular and widely accepted alternative to tobacco cigarettes due to their safety. The present study aims to analyze how smoke extracts of cigarette tobacco and electronic cigarettes affect the capability of dental pulp stem cell (DPSCs) proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. In this study, DPSCs were isolated from healthy impacted third molars of non-smokers, and two smoke extracts were made from tobacco powder and electronic cigarettes. Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated at two time intervals (14 and 21 days), and its effect on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of the DPSCs was assessed.
Results
The proliferation rate with the calculated IC50 of both smoke extracts was reduced compared to control cells. After 21 days of osteogenic induction, significantly fewer calcium deposits were visible among cells exposed to both smoke extracts. In addition, the expression of alkaline phosphatase and RANKL proteins was significantly reduced in differentiated DPSCs subjected to both smoke extracts.
Conclusions
DPSCs exposed to both smoke extracts showed decreased cell viability and osteogenic differentiation potentiality compared to control cells. Smoking in any form has a detrimental effect on the proliferation and regenerative capacity of MSCs.
This study presents an innovative methodology for Highway Route Selection (HRS), specifically tailored for mountainous terrains. The approach focuses on selecting the most suitable route for road ...alignment while prioritizing road safety and hydrological and geological considerations. Through systematic analysis, the methodology evaluates alternative road alignments by examining various risk factors related to geometric design, hydrological, and geological impacts. Utilizing Fault-Tree Analysis (FTA), 14 key design factors related to geometric design and environmental factors are identified. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology in selecting road alignments that enhance safety and mitigate environmental risks. A case study is presented where a 90-km segment of a road in Egypt’s Golden Triangle Project, characterized by challenging terrain and diverse geological features, is examined. Through detailed analysis, the study identifies critical design factors to enhance road safety and minimize environmental impact. The methodology’s comprehensive approach offers insights into road design, providing a quantitative framework for decision-making and mitigation strategies.
