Abstract Cnesterodon hypselurus is a small fish that has a restricted distribution in southern Brazil, including headwaters of the Tibagi and Itararé river basins (Upper Paraná River). This study ...reported C. hypselurus in a headwater of Cinzas River basin, where there were no previous records of this species, and employed microsatellite loci and mitochondrial haplotypes in a population genetic analysis. A total of 57 specimens was analyzed, including 30 from Cinzas River basin, 25 from Itararé River basin and two from Tibagi River basin. Results indicated low genetic diversity levels (HE = 0.334 and h = 0.246) for the sample from Cinzas River, suggesting reflections of a founder effect after the species had dispersed from one watershed to another, possibly by headwater captures. Since different populations were detected between the Cinzas and Itararé rivers (DEST = 0.248, P-value < 0.05) and other occurrence sites are still unknown in the Cinzas River basin, the data herein have great relevance and should be taken into account in future management and conservation actions, as well as in evolutionary studies of C. hypselurus.
Resumo Cnesterodon hypselurus é um pequeno peixe que possui distribuição restrita no sul do Brasil, incluindo cabeceiras das bacias dos rios Tibagi e Itararé (alto rio Paraná). Este estudo reportou C. hypselurus na cabeceira da bacia do rio das Cinzas, onde não havia registros prévios desta espécie, e empregou locos microssatélites e haplótipos mitocondriais em uma análise genética de populações. Um total de 57 espécimes foi analisado, incluindo 30 do rio das Cinzas, 25 da bacia do rio Itararé e dois da bacia do rio Tibagi. Os resultados indicaram baixos níveis de diversidade genética (HE = 0,334 e h = 0,246) para a amostra do rio das Cinzas, sugerindo reflexos de um efeito fundador após a espécie ter dispersado de uma bacia para a outra, possivelmente a partir de captura de cabeceiras. Uma vez que diferentes populações foram detectadas entre os rios das Cinzas e Itararé (DEST = 0,248, valor de P < 0,05) e que outros pontos de ocorrência ainda são desconhecidos na bacia do rio das Cinzas, os dados do presente estudo mostram grande relevância e deveriam ser considerados em futuras ações de manejo e conservação, bem como em estudos evolutivos de C. hypselurus.
Although Brazil is considered a megadiverse country, its rich freshwater biodiversity is still poorly known. A general overview of to-date knowledge on Protozoa, Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda ...species and distribution in Brazilian Hydrographic Regions is presented here, based on literature data since the 1890s. Ecological studies provided most of the occurrence records. The results show high richness for all studied biological groups and unequal distribution of the occurrence records, which are substantially influenced by research groups’ location. The data also revealed that Brazilian zooplankton biodiversity still needs to be better studied, taxonomically, although from the beginning of the last century until 1980 these kinds of studies were predominant.

In view of the growing global demand for electricity, many countries have been looking for ways to diversify production. However, in countries such as Brazil, hydroelectric power plants still ...constitute the predominant generating source, occupying important drainage systems, such as the Upper Paraná River. At the same time, hydroelectric dams are among the main sources of impacts on freshwater fish, interfering, for example, in the genetic distribution of populations. Although the same could be expected from Small Hydroelectric Plants, very little genetic information has been obtained along Neotropical drainages. Based on this, the present study analyzed the DNA (microsatellite loci) of non-migratory fish species (seven) upstream and downstream of three Small Hydroelectric Plants in the Upper Paraná River basin, obtaining information about the genetic distribution of fish populations in this scenario. In general, the data suggest that populations have been genetically subdivided by Small Hydroelectric Plants and that other factors, such as the number of Small Hydroelectric Plants along a drainage and connectivity with long free stretches, could also influence genetic differentiation levels, which provides information of great relevance to global discussions about the impacts of hydroelectric power plants, as well as for the implementation and management of projects.

To report two cases of acute endophthalmitis following intravitreal bevacizumab injection.
Two patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration were treated sequentially with an intravitreal ...injection of bevacizumab and developed signs of severe but painless infectious endophthalmitis 2 days later. Vitreous samples were obtained, followed by the injection of vancomycin 1 mg/0.1 ml and ceftazidime 2.25 mg/0.1 ml. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to determine whether the isolated microorganisms were the same.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci were identified and isolated from the vitreous specimen of both patients. PFGE revealed different patterns of banding, excluding that interpatient contamination occured.
Infectious endophthalmitis is a potential complication of intravitreal bevacizumab injection.

This work investigates peripheral nerve regeneration using membranes consisting of pure chitosan (CHI), which was further blended with nanofibrillated cellulose, with citric acid as crosslinker, with ...posterior addition of polyvinyl alcohol, with subsequent freeze thawing. Nanocellulose improves the mechanical and thermal resistance, as well as flexibility of the film, which is ideal for the surgical procedure. The hydrogel presented a slow rate of swelling, which is adequate for cell and drug delivery. A series of
tests revealed to be non-toxic for neuronal Schwann cell from the peripheral nervous system of Rattus norvegicus, while there was a slight increase in toxicity if crosslink is performed-freeze-thaw. The
results, using rabbits with a 5 mm gap nerve defect, revealed that even though pure CHI was able to regenerate the nerve, it did not present functional recovery with only the deep pain attribute being regenerated. When autologous implant was used jointly with the biomaterial membrane, as a covering agent, it revealed a functional recovery within 15 d when cellulose and the hydrogel were introduced, which was attributed to the film charge interaction that may help influence the neuronal axons growth into correct locations. Thus, indicating that this system presents ideal regeneration as nerve conduits.
Right ventricular apex (RVA) pacing has adverse effects on left atrial (LA) function and may contribute to atrial arrhythmias. The effects of Hisian area (HA) pacing on LA function are still lacking. ...The objective of this study is to assess the left ventricular (LV) electromechanical activation/relaxation, systolic (S), diastolic (D) phases, and their effects on LA function during pacing from HA and RVA.
Thirty-seven patients with normal cardiac function underwent permanent HA pacing. In all patients, a RVA backup lead was added. The patients first underwent 3 months of HA pacing, followed by 3 months of RVA pacing. After each 3-month period, we compared by echocardiography: S-D LV electromechanical delay (S-D EMD), S-D intra-LV dyssynchrony, LV S-D phases, and their function evaluated by myocardial performance index (MPI) and mitral annular tissue Doppler early diastolic velocity (E'), pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP), and LA function (LA phasic volumes and their emptying fraction). Right ventricular apex compared with HA pacing increased S-D EMD (P < 0.001) and intra-LV dyssynchrony (P < 0.001). As a consequence, a significant longer LV isovolumetric contraction time (P < 0.001) and LV isovolumetric relaxation time (P = 0.05) were measured during RVA compared with HA pacing, whereas LV ejection time was shorter (P = 0.033). Moreover, HA pacing resulted in significantly better MPI (P = 0.039), higher value of E' (P = 0.049), and lower PASP (P < 0.001). Finally, RVA compared with HA pacing was associated to higher LA volumes pre-atrial contraction (P = 0.001) and minimal volume (P = 0.003) with reduction in passive emptying fraction (P < 0.001) and total emptying fraction (P = 0.005).
Hisian area compared with RVA pacing resulted in a more physiological LV electromechanical activation/relaxation and consequently better LA function.
For patients with type 1 Gaucher disease, challenges to patient care posed by clinical heterogeneity, variable progression rates, and potential permanent disability that can result from untreated or ...suboptimally treated hematologic, skeletal, and visceral organ involvement dictate a need for comprehensive, serial monitoring. An updated consensus on minimum recommendations for effective monitoring of all adult patients with type 1 Gaucher disease has been developed by the International Collaborative Gaucher Group (ICGG) Registry coordinators. These recommendations provide a schedule for comprehensive and reproducible evaluation and monitoring of all clinically relevant aspects of this disease. The initial assessment should include confirmation of deficiency of beta-glucocerebrosidase, genotyping, and a complete family medical history. Other assessments to be performed initially and at regular intervals include a complete physical examination, patient-reported quality of life using the SF-36 survey, and assessment of hematologic (hemoglobin and platelet count), visceral, and skeletal involvement, and biomarkers. Specific radiologic imaging techniques are recommended for evaluating visceral and skeletal pathology. All patients should undergo comprehensive regular assessment, the frequency of which depends on treatment status and whether therapeutic goals have been achieved. Additionally, reassessment should be performed whenever enzyme therapy dose is altered, or in case of significant clinical complication.
