To accumulate evidence that indicated the key role played by virus-triggered inflammation in the 2019-novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which emerged in Wuhan City and rapidly spread throughout China.
Age, neutrophil(NEU)-to-lymphocyte (LYM) ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte (MON) ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) of 93 patients with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 were investigated and compared. The receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to determine the thresholds for five bio-markers, and their prognostic values were assessed via the Kaplan–Meier curve and multivariate COX regression models.
The median age was 46.4 years old, and 37cases were females. A total of 27.8% of patients had been to Wuhan, and 73.1% had contacted with people from Wuhan. Fever (83.8%) and cough (70.9%) were the two most common symptoms. Elevated NLR and age were significantly associated with illness severity. The binary logistic analysis identified elevated NLR (hazard risk HR 2.46, 95% confidence interval CI 1.98–4.57) and age (HR 2.52, 95% CI 1.65–4.83) as independent factors for poor clinical outcome of COVID-19. NLR exhibited the largest area under the curve at 0.841, with the highest specificity (63.6%) and sensitivity (88%).
Elevated age and NLR can be considered independent biomarkers for indicating poor clinical outcomes.

Current pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) is a high-risk investment which is usually faced with some unexpected even disastrous failures in different stages of drug discovery. One main ...reason for R&D failures is the efficacy and safety deficiencies which are related largely to absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) properties and various toxicities (T). Therefore, rapid ADMET evaluation is urgently needed to minimize failures in the drug discovery process. Here, we developed a web-based platform called ADMETlab for systematic ADMET evaluation of chemicals based on a comprehensively collected ADMET database consisting of 288,967 entries. Four function modules in the platform enable users to conveniently perform six types of drug-likeness analysis (five rules and one prediction model), 31 ADMET endpoints prediction (basic property: 3, absorption: 6, distribution: 3, metabolism: 10, elimination: 2, toxicity: 7), systematic evaluation and database/similarity searching. We believe that this web platform will hopefully facilitate the drug discovery process by enabling early drug-likeness evaluation, rapid ADMET virtual screening or filtering and prioritization of chemical structures. To investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of T2DM patients with rs78466831 and provide a basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
OTUD3 gene rs78466831 SNP was detected by Sanger sequencing in all the collected specimens of laboratory-confirmed T2DM patients and healthy people. Clinical characteristics indexes inconsisting of fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and a body mass index (BMI), T2DM-associated chronic complications (myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease, retinopathy, arterial plaque, peripheral neuropathy and nephropathy) were obtained from the clinical laboratory information systems and electronic medical record system. Clinical characteristic indicators were compared between the wild-type and variant (rs78466831) patients with T2DM.
The prevalence of rs78466831 in the T2DM patients group was significantly higher than the healthy control in our academic center. The general characteristic indicators were not significantly different between the wild-type and rs78466831 patients with T2DM, except the family history of diabetes. Clinical laboratory indicators including HbA1c, FBG, OGTT, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C and CP had no significant difference between the two groups. The therapeutic drug and target achievement rates were not significantly different between the two groups. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy in the variant group was significantly higher than the wild-type group.
The OTUD3 gene rs78466831 was associated with T2DM and may be a biological risk factor of diabetes retinopathy.
The planthopper superfamily Fulgoroidea (Insecta: Hemiptera) is one of the most dominant groups of phytophagous insects. It comprises about 20 families, containing a total of 9000 species worldwide. ...Despite several recent studies, the phylogeny of Fulgoroidea is not yet satisfactorily resolved and the phylogenetic positions of several key families, especially Cixiidae, Delphacidae, Tettigometridae, Nogodinidae, Acanaloniidae and Issidae, are contentious. Here, we expand upon recent phylogenetic work using additional nuclear (18S and 28S) and novel mitochondrial (16S and cytb) markers. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses yielded robust phylogenetic trees. In these topologies, a group containing Cixiidae and Delphacidae is recovered as the sister group to the remaining taxa. Tettigometridae is placed in a more nested position and is grouped with Caliscelidae. Sister relationships are found between Flatidae and Ricaniidae, and between Dictyopharidae and Fulgoridae. Nogodinidae and Issidae are confirmed to be non-monophyletic families. For major nodes of interest, divergence date estimates are generally older than those from the fossil record.

As a major noncoding fragment, the control region (CR) of mtDNA is responsible for the initiation of mitogenome transcription and replication. Several structural features of CR sequences have been ...reported in many insects. However, comprehensive analyses on the structural organization and phylogenetic utility, as well as the role of tandem replications (TRs) on length variation, high A+T content, and shift of base skew of CR sequences are poorly investigated in hemipteran insects. In this study, we conducted a series of comparative analyses, using 116 samples covering all 11 infraorders of the five currently recognized monophyletic groups in the Hemiptera. Several structural elements (mononucleotide stretches containing conserved sequence blocks (CSBs), TRs, and GA-rich region) were identified in the mitochondrial control region in hemipteran insects, without showing a consistent location. The presence and absence of certain specific structural elements in CR sequences show the various structural organizations of that segment among the five monophyletic groups, which indicates the diversification of the control region's structural organization in Hemiptera. Among the many groups within Hemiptera, eight monophyletic groups and three consistent phylogenetic trees were recovered, using CSBs datasets by maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, which suggests the possible utility of CR sequences for phylogenetic reconstruction in certain groups of Hemiptera. Statistical analyses showed that TRs may contribute to the length variation, high AT content, and the shift of base skewing of CR sequences toward high AT content in the Hemiptera. Our findings enrich the knowledge of structural organization, phylogenetic utility, and roles of tandem replication of hemipteran CR, and provide a possible framework for mitochondrial control region analyses in hemimetabolous insects.

Pulsation is a universal phenomenon that exists in diverse fields. For nonlinear optics, the soliton pulsating behavior can be meaningful for fundamental physics and industrial purpose owing to its ...fruitful nonlinear dynamics and the possible detrimental effect of instability (or even route to chaos) during pulsating process. Herein, a novel type of soliton pulsation in an ultrafast laser is unveiled. The pulsating behavior features that the soliton experiences periodic peak power variation but with almost invariable pulse energy. This phenomenon is denoted as “invisible soliton pulsation” when referring to the routine diagnostic methods. However, the invisible soliton pulsation can be distinguished by recording the shot‐to‐shot spectra with real‐time spectroscopy technique. It is found that the appearance of the invisible soliton pulsation is sensitive to the pump power level. Moreover, the phenomenon of invisible soliton pulsation is further revealed by numerical simulations. These findings can shed new insights into the complex nonlinear behavior of solitons in dissipative optical systems, and also enrich the performance diagnostic of ultrafast lasers for practical applications.
A novel type of soliton pulsation in an ultrafast laser is unveiled with real‐time spectroscopy technique. It features that the mode‐locked spectrum evolves with time, but the pulse energy remains almost unchanged. Since the pulsation cannot be resolved by the routine diagnostic methods, it can be termed as “invisible” soliton pulsation. Moreover, the phenomenon is further revealed by numerical simulations.

Classically, Hemiptera is comprised of two suborders: Homoptera and Heteroptera. Homoptera includes Cicadomorpha, Fulgoromorpha and Sternorrhyncha. However, according to previous molecular ...phylogenetic studies based on 18S rDNA, Fulgoromorpha has a closer relationship to Heteroptera than to other hemipterans, leaving Homoptera as paraphyletic. Therefore, the position of Fulgoromorpha is important for studying phylogenetic structure of Hemiptera. We inferred the evolutionary affiliations of twenty-five superfamilies of Hemiptera using mitochondrial protein-coding genes and rRNAs. We sequenced three mitogenomes, from Pyrops candelaria, Lycorma delicatula and Ricania marginalis, representing two additional families in Fulgoromorpha. Pyrops and Lycorma are representatives of an additional major family Fulgoridae in Fulgoromorpha, whereas Ricania is a second representative of the highly derived clade Ricaniidae. The organization and size of these mitogenomes are similar to those of the sequenced fulgoroid species. Our consensus phylogeny of Hemiptera largely supported the relationships (((Fulgoromorpha,Sternorrhyncha),Cicadomorpha),Heteroptera), and thus supported the classic phylogeny of Hemiptera. Selection of optimal evolutionary models (exclusion and inclusion of two rRNA genes or of third codon positions of protein-coding genes) demonstrated that rapidly evolving and saturated sites should be removed from the analyses.

Executing safe brachiation maneuvers with a cable-suspended underactuated robot is a challenging problem due to the complications induced by the cable dynamics. We present and experimentally ...implement an online adaptive controller for a wire-borne brachiating robot swinging on a vibrating cable. An adaptive function approximation approach is proposed to estimate the unknown dynamics of the flexible cable as an external force applied to the robot. Robust control Lyapunov and barrier functions are designed and incorporated into quadratic programs to synthesize a unified adaptive control framework, which formally guarantees the stability and safety of the brachiating robot in the presence of dynamic uncertainties, actuator constraints, and obstacles in the environment. The stability analysis and derivation of the adaptation law are carried out through a Lyapunov analysis. We demonstrate and validate the proposed control framework using extensive hardware experiments with an underactuated brachiating robot operating on a flexible cable. Simulation results, hardware experiments, and comparisons with a baseline controller show that the proposed quadratic programming-based controller achieves reliable tracking performance and disturbance estimation in the presence of model uncertainties, actuator limits, and safety constraints.
Recent developments in the field of cellular therapeutics have indicated the potential of stem cell injections directly to the spinal cord. Injections require either open surgery or a Magnetic ...Resonance Imaging (MRI) guided injection. Needle positioning during MRI imaging is a significant hurdle to direct spinal injection, as the small target region and interlaminar space require high positioning accuracy. Objective: To improve both the procedure time and positioning accuracy, an MRI guided robotic needle positioning system is developed. Methods: The robot uses linear piezoelectric motors to directly drive a parallel plane positioning mechanism. Feedback is provided through MRI during the orientation procedure. Both accuracy and repeatability of the robot are characterized. Results: This system is found to be capable of repeatability below 51 μm. Needle endpoint error is limited by imaging modality, but is validated to 156 μm. Conclusion: The reported robot and MRI image feedback system is capable of repeatable and accurate needle guide positioning. Significance : This high accuracy will result in a significant improvement to the workflow of spinal injection procedures.
