Abstract
We construct four equation of state (EoS) tables, tabulated over a range of temperatures, densities, and charge fractions, relevant for neutron star applications such as simulations of ...neutron star mergers. The EoS are computed from a relativistic mean-field theory constrained by the pure neutron matter EoS from chiral effective field theory, inferred properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter, and astrophysical observations of neutron star structure. To model nuclear matter at low densities, we attach an EoS that models inhomogeneous nuclear matter at arbitrary temperatures and charge fractions. To monitor the levels of protecting antibodies raised in the population in response to infection and/or to immunization with SARS-CoV-2, we need a technique that allows high throughput and low-cost ...quantitative analysis of human IgG antibodies reactive against viral antigens. Here we describe an ultra-fast, high throughput and inexpensive assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in humans. The assay is based on Ni2+ magnetic particles coated with His tagged SARS-CoV-2 antigens. A simple and inexpensive 96 well plate magnetic extraction/homogenization process is described which allows the simultaneous analysis of 96 samples and delivers results in 7 min with high accuracy.

We describe and implement a procedure for determining the couplings of a relativistic mean-field theory (RMFT) that is optimized for application to neutron star phenomenology. In the standard RMFT ...approach, the couplings are constrained by comparing the theory's predictions for symmetric matter at saturation density with measured nuclear properties. The theory is then applied to neutron stars which consist of neutron-rich matter at densities ranging up to several times saturation density, which allows for additional astrophysical constraints. In our approach, rather than using the RMFT to extrapolate from symmetric to neutron-rich matter and from finite-sized nuclei to uniform matter, we fit the RMFT to properties of uniform pure neutron matter obtained from chiral effective field theory. Chiral effective field theory incorporates the experimental data for nuclei in the framework of a controlled expansion for nuclear forces valid at nuclear densities and enables us to account for theoretical uncertainties when fitting the RMFT. We construct four simple RMFTs that span the uncertainties provided by chiral effective field theory for neutron matter, and are consistent with current astrophysical constraints on the equation of state. Lastly, our RMFTs can be used to model the properties of neutron-rich matter across the vast range of densities and temperatures encountered in neutron stars and their mergers.

The hard X-ray emission from magnetars and other isolated neutron stars remains under-explored. An instrument with higher sensitivity to hard X-rays is critical to understanding the physics of ...neutron star magnetospheres and also the relationship between magnetars and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). High sensitivity to hard X-rays is required to determine the number of magnetars with hard X-ray tails, and to track transient non-thermal emission from these sources for years post-outburst. This sensitivity would also enable previously impossible studies of the faint non-thermal emission from middle-aged rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), and detailed phase-resolved spectroscopic studies of younger, bright RPPs. The High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging (

arcsec half-power diameter (HPD) at 0.2–25 keV) and broad spectral coverage (0.2–80 keV) with a sensitivity superior to current facilities (including XMM-Newton and NuSTAR). HEX-P has the required timing resolution to perform follow-up observations of sources identified by other facilities and positively identify candidate pulsating neutron stars. Here we discuss how HEX-P is ideally suited to address important questions about the physics of magnetars and other isolated neutron stars.
We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of ...physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Both monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and MAO B in the brain have been implicated in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease. MAO B is elevated in plaque-associated glia in Alzheimer brain. Elevations in MAO A ...in Alzheimer neurons have been linked to increases in neurotoxic metabolites and neuron loss. We investigated the relationship between cognitive function in Alzheimer patients and post-mortem prefrontal cortex MAO A and B activities. Prefrontal cortex tissue from 92 Alzheimer patients and 74 neurologically normal subjects was obtained at autopsy and analyzed for activities of MAO A and B by radioenzymatic methods. Mini Mental Status Exam was performed on Alzheimer patients within 1 year of death. Alzheimer brains were analyzed for Braak stage, tangles, plaques and choline acetyltransferase activity. Prefrontal cortex MAO B activity was significantly increased by 16% in Alzheimer patients versus normals, whereas MAO A activity was significantly decreased by 17% in these same patients. Neither MAO A nor MAO B activities correlated with cognitive function (MMSE score), choline acetyltransferase activity, plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, Braak stage, or age of disease onset in the Alzheimer patients. With increasing Alzheimer duration or increasing Braak stage, MMSE scores and choline acetyltransferase activity declined, but levels of MAO A and B in prefrontal cortex were unchanged. Patients in the upper quintile for MAO A or B activity did not differ significantly from those in the lowest quintile with respect to MMSE scores or age of Alzheimer disease onset. We conclude that the changes in MAO A and B in the prefrontal cortex occur very early in Alzheimer's disease and remain relatively constant as the disease progresses.

Intracranial suppurative complications of sinusitis remain a challenging and contemporary topic. To determine the prevalence of sinogenic sources in intracranial infectious complications, we reviewed ...the records at a large public hospital between 1985 and 1995. There were 203 patients with 212 suppurative intracranial infections. Sinogenic sources were identified in 12 patients with 19 infections. Most patients had ethmoid or frontal sinusitis. We discuss the presentation, microbiology, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical course of these 12 cases. The diagnosis of intracranial complications of sinusitis requires a high index of suspicion and radiographic imaging of the head and paranasal sinuses. The mean hospital stay was 31.4 days and all 12 patients survived, although three patients had significant neurologic sequelae.

Hexagonal 6H-BaTiO3 has been stabilised at room temperature according to the formula Ba(Ti1-xMx)O3-*d where M=Mg, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Ga, Ni and In. Solid solution ranges are reported for samples ...prepared by the mixed oxide route at 1400NBDGC. Rietveld refinement of Neutron Diffraction data for BaTi0.92Ga0.08O2.96 in the space group P63/mmc shows the presence of oxygen vacancies in the hexagonally close packed layers between face sharing Ti2O9 dimers. All materials are dielectric insulators at room temperature with permittivity values between ~50-80. Several compositions resonate at microwave frequencies with quality factors (Q.f) between ~1300-7700 GHz.

Modern surveillance systems often utilize multiple physically distributed sensors of different types to provide complementary and overlapping coverage on targets. In order to generate target tracks ...and estimates, the sensor data need to be fused. While a centralized processing approach is theoretically optimal, there are significant advantages in distributing the fusion operations over multiple processing nodes. This paper discusses architectures for distributed fusion, whereby each node processes the data from its own set of sensors and communicates with other nodes to improve on the estimates, The information graph is introduced as a way of modeling information flow in distributed fusion systems and for developing algorithms. Fusion for target tracking involves two main operations: estimation and association. Distributed estimation algorithms based on the information graph are presented for arbitrary fusion architectures and related to linear and nonlinear distributed estimation results. The distributed data association problem is discussed in terms of track-to-track association likelihoods. Distributed versions of two popular tracking approaches (joint probabilistic data association and multiple hypothesis tracking) are then presented, and examples of applications are given.
We tested the hypothesis that glucose intolerance develops in genetically prone subjects when exogenous insulin resistance is induced by dexamethasone (dex) and investigated whether the ...steroid-induced glucose intolerance is due to impairment of beta-cell function alone and/or insulin resistance. Oral glucose tolerance (OGTT) and intravenous glucose tolerance tests with minimal model analysis were performed before and following 5 days of dex treatment (4 mg/day) in 20 relatives of non-insulin-dependent diabetic (NIDDM) patients and in 20 matched control subjects (age: 29.6 +/- 1.7 vs 29.6 +/- 1.6 years, BMI: 25.1 +/- 1.0 vs 25.1 +/- 0.9 kg/m2). Before dex, glucose tolerance was similar in both groups (2-h plasma glucose concentration (PG): 5.5 +/- 0.2 range: 3.2-7.0 vs 5.5 +/- 0.2 3.7-7.4 mmol/l). Although insulin sensitivity (Si) was significantly lower in the relatives before dex, insulin sensitivity was reduced to a similar level during dex in both the relatives and control subjects (0.30 +/- 0.04 vs 0.34 +/- 0.04 10(-4) min(-1) per pmol/l, NS). During dex, the variation in the OGTT 2-h PG was greater in the relatives (8.5 +/- 0.7 3.9-17.0 vs 7.5 +/- 0.3 5.7-9.8 mmol/l, F-test p < 0.05) which, by inspection of the data, was caused by seven relatives with a higher PG than the maximal value seen in the control subjects (9.8 mmol/l). These "hyperglycaemic" relatives had diminished first phase insulin secretion (O1) both before and during dex compared with the "normal" relatives and the control subjects (pre-dex O1: 12.6 +/- 3.6 vs 26.4 +/- 4.2 and 24.6 +/- 3.6 (p < 0.05), post-dex O1: 22.2 +/- 6.6 vs 48.0 +/- 7.2 and 46.2 +/- 6.6 respectively (p < 0.05) pmol x l(-1) x min(-1) per mg/dl). However, Si was similar in "hyperglycaemic" and "normal" relatives before dex (0.65 +/- 0.10 vs 0.54 +/- 0.10 10(-4) x min(-1) per pmol/l) and suppressed similarly during dex (0.30 +/- 0.07 vs 0.30 +/- 0.06 10(-4) x min(-1) per pmol/l). Multiple regression analysis confirmed the unique importance of low pre-dex beta-cell function to subsequent development of high 2-h post-dex OGTT plasma glucose levels (R2 = 0.56). In conclusion, exogenous induced insulin resistance by dex will induce impaired or diabetic glucose tolerance in those genetic relatives of NIDDM patients who have impaired beta-cell function (retrospectively) prior to dex exposure. These subjects are therefore unable to enhance their beta-cell response in order to match the dex-induced insulin resistant state.
