America's farms and farmers are integral to the U.S. economy and, more broadly, to the nation's social and cultural fabric. A healthy agricultural sector helps ensure a safe and reliable food supply, ...improves energy security, and contributes to employment and economic development, traditionally in small towns and rural areas where farming serves as a nexus for related sectors from farm machinery manufacturing to food processing. The agricultural sector also plays a role in the nation's overall economic growth by providing crucial raw inputs for the production of a wide range of goods and services, including many that generate substantial export value.
If the agricultural sector is to be accurately understood and the policies that affect its functioning are to remain well informed, the statistical system's data collection programs must be periodically revisited to ensure they are keeping up with current realities. This report reviews current information and makes recommendations to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Economic Research Service (ERS) to help identify effective methods for collecting data and reporting information about American agriculture, given increased complexity and other changes in farm business structure in recent decades.
The development of the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(American Psychiatric Association, 1994)
included 12 field trials to assess proposed revisions. This ...article provides results from the antisocial personality disorder (APD) field trial that was conducted to obtain data of relevance to the proposals for simplification and for the inclusion of more traditional traits of psychopathy. Provided herein are the results from 4 sites that had sampled from populations of particular relevance to the diagnosis of APD (i.e., prison inmates, psychiatric inpatients, outpatients with substance use disorders, and homeless persons). The results indicated that some items from the 3rd revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(American Psychiatric Association, 1987)
could be deleted without affecting the diagnosis. The field trial provided mixed support for the proposal to include more traditional traits of psychopathy.

In order to test the hypothesis of complete androgen blockade for advanced prostate cancer (D2CaP), an intergroup trial was instituted in 1985 comparing leuprolide (L) alone to the combination of L ...with flutamide (F). Eligibility requirements included previously untreated histologically confirmed stage D2CaP, measurable bone or soft tissue metastases, performance status (PS) of 3 or better, acceptable renal and hepatic function, no severe cardiac disease, and no prior or concomitant endocrine therapy. Stratification at entry was on the basis of PS and none or minimal disease (MD) versus severe degree (SD) of bone metastases. Six hundred and seventeen patients were entered into this study between March 1985 and April 1986. At the present time, there is a 3-month difference in the median progression-free survival (13.9 vs 16.9 months; P = 0.039) and a 7.1-month difference in survival (27.9 vs 35.01 months; P = 0.035) favoring L + F. In L + F-treated patients with good PS-MD, the median survival recently has been reached and is 51.9 months vs 39.6 months for L + P patients. The 107 black patients in the study had median survival of 26.4 months vs 33.3 months for whites. Discussions of racial differences in survival as well as other prognostic factors will be presented. The combination of L + F is superior to treatment with L alone. The benefits appear greatest in patients with minimal disease.
