The following 2-h procedure is proposed as a screen to indicate how soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) might perform in bioassays required for site remediation in Canada. ...Bio-available PHC in soil is extracted by aqueous cyclodextrin; a centrifuged extract portion is treated with amylase, then subjected to a standard Microtox registered bioassay. Extract toxicity is correlated to available PHC content.
Ashworth, J. and Symonds, C. 2013. Simplified Microtox®bioassay for drilling waste disposal on lease soils in Alberta. Can. J. Soil Sci. 93: 109â111. The Microtox bioassay is specified in ...regulations governing drilling waste disposal in western Canada. Traditionally, four serial dilutions of waste-derived fluid are tested, to bracket the regulatory Pass threshold concentration. We find that an equally valid Pass/Fail result can be obtained from one test at the threshold concentration. The simplified method has labour and cost-saving advantages.
Estimates are obtained for diffusion coefficients of Al through polycrystalline hornblende layers during retrograde metamorphism using petrological studies of two types of coronas, with geologically ...based estimates of time scale.
Under instrumental voting closer elections are expected to have higher turnout. Under expressive voting, however, turnout may increase with decreasing closeness when voters have a preference for ...winners. An empirical test using data on Belgian municipal elections supports this. We find that turnout reaches a local maximum when the largest party in the election obtains just over 52% of the seats and then falls (supporting the "instrumental" closeness-argument). There is, however, another turning point: the presence of a highly dominating party (receiving at least two-thirds of the votes) stimulates turnout despite the fact that dominance implies lower closeness.
In a widely-used method for particle size analysis of soils, the weight percentages of sand, silt, and clay are calculated from the density of an aqueous soil suspension measured by hydrometer. There ...are many versions of the procedure, differing in the type of dispersing solution, the volume of the suspension, the time of settling before taking hydrometer readings, or in the method of correcting the raw readings. Our procedure avoids errors inherent in some versions of the method, which can cause discrepancies from expected values. The details of our procedure should interest those concerned with minimizing confidence limits in inter-laboratory surveys and with providing reliable particle-size distribution data to laboratory clients.

The setting of new taxes is a notably visible act that has potential political costs. This paper explores the setting of new environmental taxes across the 308 Flemish municipalities over the period ...1991–1999. We find that first adoptions of a green tax are much less likely to occur during election years but are more likely if ones' peers/neighbours (defined both geographically and ideologically) already have the tax. In addition, whilst left-wing governments are more likely to set new taxes and coalitions are more likely to set the tax than single-party governments, the greater the fragmentation of the municipal government, the lower is the likelihood that a new tax will be set.

This paper analyses the effect of literary prizes and nominations on the subsequent market success using a panel dataset of Dutch-language titles from January 2003 to June 2005. The analysis ...indicates winning a prize generally has a positive effect on the ensuing sales, whereas nominations do not generate additional sales. The precise effect differs depending on the particular prize. Winning a "home" debut prize has a significant positive effect on sales, and, to a lesser extent, "established" literary prizes have a significant positive effect on the sales of the winning title, but winning a debut prize in the Netherlands, the neighbouring country, has no effect on sales in Belgium.

The just peace movement offers a critical shift in focus and imagination. Recognizing that all life is sacred and seeking peace through violence is unsustainable, the just peace approach turns our ...attention to rehumanization, participatory processes, nonviolent resistance, restorative justice, reconciliation, racial justice, and creative strategies of active nonviolence to build sustainable peace, transform conflict, and end cycles of violence. A Just Peace Ethic Primer illuminates a moral framework behind this praxis and proves its versatility in global contexts. With essays by a diverse group of scholars, A Just Peace Ethic Primer outlines the ethical, theological, and activist underpinnings of a just peace ethic. These essays also demonstrate and revise the norms of a just peace ethic through conflict cases involving US immigration, racial and environmental justice, and the death penalty, as well as gang violence in El Salvador, civil war in South Sudan, ISIS in Iraq, gender-based violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, women-led activism in the Philippines, and ethnic violence in Kenya. A Just Peace Ethic Primer exemplifies the ecumenical, interfaith, and multicultural aspects of a nonviolent approach to preventing and transforming violent conflict. Scholars, advocates, and activists working in politics, history, international law, philosophy, theology, and conflict resolution will find this resource vital for providing a fruitful framework and implementing a creative vision of sustainable peace.
At the heart of the European debate lies the tension between the idea of European unity and individual state identities and nationalisms. This volume provides an insight into this dichotomy by ...exploring the role of heritage in the new Europe.
The main theme of this book is that a number of possible heritages can be shaped from the European past depending on the purposes for which they are intended. Through different methods of management intervention, heritage can fulfil a variety of functions, becoming a major commercial resource in the form of the tourism industry, or enlisted in the creation and maintenance of place identities.
Leading contributors look at different perceptions of heritage by different cultures, and the social and political consequences of heritage planning. The nature of heritage planning for emerging, spatially fragmented state structures is also discussed.
