We report new limits on a spin-independent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon interaction cross section using 39.5 kg days of data taken with a p-type point-contact germanium detector ...of 840 g fiducial mass at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. Crucial to this study is the understanding of the selection procedures and, in particular, the bulk-surface events differentiation at the sub-keV range. The signal-retaining and background-rejecting efficiencies were measured with calibration gamma sources and a novel n-type point-contact germanium detector. Part of the parameter space in the cross section versus WIMP-mass implied by various experiments is probed and excluded.

Energy saving at any enterprise is an urgent problem associated with high expences for energy carriers and a constant increase in their cost. The aim of the study is to modernize the energy system of ...one of the poultry factories in the Vologda Oblast in Russia in order to reduce electricity costs. Modeling methods for a comprehensive assessment of possible options were usedas well as an experiment that showed that the most effective way to reduce electricity costs was to upgrade the energy system based on "small generation" using traditional fuels. The modernization allowed the poultry farm to produce up to a third of its own electricity with the help of mini-CHPs annually, and to keep the cost of the generated kW⋅h three times lower than the network. The experience of modernization of the energy system of a poultry farm in Russia has confirmed the possibility of joint use of PTL-6(10) and a steam turbine generator at the enterprise. The paper will be useful to researchers and energy specialists who are looking for ways to save energy on a poultry farms.
The p-type point-contact germanium detectors are novel techniques offering kg-scale radiation sensors with sub-keV sensitivities. They have been used for light dark matter WIMPs searches and may have ...potential applications in neutrino physics. There are, however, anomalous surface behaviour which needs to be characterized and understood. We describe the methods and results of a research program whose goals are to identify the bulk and surface events via software pulse shape analysis techniques, and to devise calibration schemes to evaluate the selection efficiency factors. Efficiencies-corrected background spectra from the low-background facility at Kuo-Sheng Neutrino Laboratory are derived.

We studied the 12C(p,2p+n) reaction at beam momenta of 5.9, 8.0, and 9.0 GeV/c. For quasielastic (p,2p) events p(f), the momentum of the knocked-out proton before the reaction, was compared (event by ...event) with p(n), the coincident neutron momentum. For |p(n)|>k(F)=0.220 GeV/c (the Fermi momentum) a strong back-to-back directional correlation between p(f) and p(n) was observed, indicative of short-range n-p correlations. From p(n) and p(f) we constructed the distributions of c.m. and relative motion in the longitudinal direction for correlated pairs. We also determined that 49+/-13% of events with |p(f)|>k(F) had directionally correlated neutrons with |p(n)|>k(F).

The atomic nucleus is composed of two different kinds of fermions: protons and neutrons. If the protons and neutrons did not interact, the Pauli exclusion principle would force the majority of ...fermions (usually neutrons) to have a higher average momentum. Our high-energy electron-scattering measurements using 12C, 27Al, 56Fe, and 208Pb targets show that even in heavy, neutron-rich nuclei, short-range interactions between the fermions form correlated high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. Thus, in neutron-rich nuclei, protons have a greater probability than neutrons to have momentum greater than the Fermi momentum. This finding has implications ranging from nuclear few-body systems to neutron stars and may also be observable experimentally in two-spin–state, ultracold atomic gas systems.

The strong nuclear interaction between nucleons (protons and neutrons) is the effective force that holds the atomic nucleus together. This force stems from fundamental interactions between quarks and ...gluons (the constituents of nucleons) that are described by the equations of quantum chromodynamics. However, as these equations cannot be solved directly, nuclear interactions are described using simplified models, which are well constrained at typical inter-nucleon distances
but not at shorter distances. This limits our ability to describe high-density nuclear matter such as that in the cores of neutron stars
. Here we use high-energy electron scattering measurements that isolate nucleon pairs in short-distance, high-momentum configurations
, accessing a kinematical regime that has not been previously explored by experiments, corresponding to relative momenta between the pair above 400 megaelectronvolts per c (c, speed of light in vacuum). As the relative momentum between two nucleons increases and their separation thereby decreases, we observe a transition from a spin-dependent tensor force to a predominantly spin-independent scalar force. These results demonstrate the usefulness of using such measurements to study the nuclear interaction at short distances and also support the use of point-like nucleon models with two- and three-body effective interactions to describe nuclear systems up to densities several times higher than the central density of the nucleus.

The Central Time-of-Flight system for the large-acceptance CLAS12 spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is described. The system consists of a hermetic barrel ...of 48 scintillation counters at a radius of 25 cm from the beamline. The wedge-shaped counters are 3.4 cm wide, 3.0 cm thick, and 90 cm long, and span a range of polar angles relative to the center of the nominal target location from roughly 35∘ to 125∘. The counters reside in the 5-T field of the CLAS12 superconducting solenoid. The bars are read out via bent light guides 1 m long on the upstream end of the counters and 1.6 m long on the downstream end. The phototubes are shielded by a multi-layer dynamical magnetic shield system to reduce the local fringe fields in the range from 400 G to 1000 G down to the level of 0.2 G at the location of the photocathodes. The average effective time resolution of the counters is 80 ps.

We present the results of our final analysis of the full data set of g(1)(p) (Q(2)), the spin structure function of the proton, collected using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory in 2000-2001. Polarized ...electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2, and 5.7 GeV were scattered from proton targets ((NH3)-N-15 dynamically polarized along the beam direction) and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetries, we extracted virtual photon asymmetries A(1)(p) and A(2)(p) and spin structure functions g(1)(p) and g(2)(p) over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2 < Q(2) < 5 GeV2 and 1.08 GeV< W < 3 GeV) and calculated moments of g(1)(p). We compare our final results with various theoretical models and expectations, as well as with parametrizations of the world data. Our data, with their precision and dense kinematic coverage, are able to constrain fits of polarized parton distributions, test pQCD predictions for quark polarizations at large x, offer a better understanding of quark-hadron duality, and provide more precise values of higher twist matrix elements in the framework of the operator product expansion.

Germanium ionization detectors with sensitivities as low as 100eVee (electron-equivalent energy) open new windows for studies on neutrino and dark matter physics. The relevant physics subjects are ...summarized. The detectors have to measure physics signals whose amplitude is comparable to that of pedestal electronic noise. To fully exploit this new detector technique, various experimental issues including quenching factors, energy reconstruction and calibration, signal triggering and selection as well as evaluation of their associated efficiencies have to be attended. The efforts and results of a research program to address these challenges are presented.

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the sinϕ moment ALUsinϕ from the hard exclusive e→p→e′nπ+ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from ...forward to backward angles in the center of mass. The ALUsinϕ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV2 in −t, covering the kinematic regimes of generalized parton distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found ALUsinϕ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90° in the center of mass. The unique results presented in this Letter will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.
