People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have high rates of acute and chronic health conditions, complex support needs and often face multiple barriers to accessing health services. Financial incentive ...(FI) interventions have been found effective in improving service engagement and health outcomes for a range of health conditions, populations and settings, but little is known about their impact on PEH. We conducted a scoping review to explore the impact of FI interventions on treatment retention, adherence and other health outcomes of PEH. We searched seven electronic databases from inception to September 2021 to identify peer‐reviewed published English language studies that used FI interventions with adult PEH. A scoping review methodology was used to chart relevant data uniformly. Descriptive statistics and narrative syntheses were used to describe outcomes. Thirty‐three quantitative articles related to 29 primary studies were published between 1990 and 2021 and met inclusion criteria. Studies targeted three areas of health behaviour change: decreasing substance use or increasing abstinence rates, preventing or treating infectious diseases or promoting lifestyle/general health goal attainment. A variety of FIs were used (cash/non‐cash, escalating/fixed schedule, larger/smaller amounts, some/all behaviours rewarded, certain/uncertain reward) across studies. Twenty‐six of the primary studies reported significantly better outcomes for the participants receiving FI compared to controls. There were mixed findings about the efficacy of cash versus non‐cash FIs, non‐cash FIs versus other interventions and higher versus lower value of incentives. Furthermore, there was limited research about long‐term outcomes and impacts. FIs have promise in increasing abstinence from substances, engagement in infectious disease treatment, retention in health services and general lifestyle modifications for PEH. Future research should examine long‐term impacts and the contribution of co‐interventions and intermediary lifestyle behaviour changes.

Labour mobility and subsequent workers migration is an increasing trend worldwide and can be a force that counteracts Canada’s shortage of skilled labour. Supercommuting allows workers facing ...economic challenges to pursue more financially advantageous work opportunities in other regions. This study aimed to evaluate the “supercommuting” labour mobility model and its impact on long-distance mobile workers’ mental health and wellbeing. We utilized a non-experimental research design using convenience sampling from workers who participated in Blue Branch Inc.’s (Hamilton, Canada) supercommuting labour mobility model. An online questionnaire collected demographic data, work-related data, occupational stress measures related to burnout, and job-related stress data. Data collection was started on 1 April 2021, and of the total 58 participants, the majority (44, 76%) were male, born outside Canada, and had an average age of 32.8 years. Workplace Safety (95%), full-time employment opportunity (95%), career advancement possibility (95%), and income and benefits (94.9%) were found to be the most crucial factors to keep study participants working in their current position. Of the 47 participants who experienced burnout, only one showed severe burnout in each domain (personal, work-related, and colleague-related). There is a great need for preventative burnout programs and supportive employer resources for those who engage in long-distance labour commuting. The study emphasizes the need to encourage policymakers to develop solutions for training future Ontario workers to support mobile employment and long-distance labour commuting.
Brain imaging is a non-invasive and in vivo direct estimation of detailed brain structure, regional brain functioning and estimation of molecular processes in the brain. The main objective of this ...review was to analyze functional and structural neuroimaging studies of individuals at risk for suicide. We reviewed articles published between 2005 and 2018, indexed in PubMed and Medline, assessing structural and functional alterations of the brain of individuals at high risk for suicide and at low risk for suicide. We reviewed functional and structural neuroimaging studies which included individuals with a history of suicidal ideation or attempt in major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), psychosis, and borderline personality disorder (BPD). We selected 45 papers that focused on suicidality in MDD, 17 papers on BD, 11 papers on psychosis, and 5 papers on BPD. The suicidal brain across psychiatric diagnoses seems to heavily involve dysfunction of the fronto-temporal network, primarily involving reductions of gray and white matter volumes in the pre-frontal cortex (PFC), anterior cingulate, and superior temporal gyrus. Nonetheless, there are several ways to define suicidal behaviour and ideation. Therefore, it still remains difficult to combine the evidence from imaging studies that used different definitions of suicidality.

Abstract Objective Suicide is a major concern for those afflicted by schizophrenia. Identifying patients at the highest risk for future suicide attempts remains a complex problem for psychiatric ...interventions. Machine learning models allow for the integration of many risk factors in order to build an algorithm that predicts which patients are likely to attempt suicide. Currently it is unclear how to integrate previously identified risk factors into a clinically relevant predictive tool to estimate the probability of a patient with schizophrenia for attempting suicide. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional assessment on a sample of 345 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Suicide attempters and non-attempters were clearly identified using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and the Beck Suicide Ideation Scale (BSS). We developed four classification algorithms using a regularized regression, random forest, elastic net and support vector machine models with sociocultural and clinical variables as features to train the models. Results All classification models performed similarly in identifying suicide attempters and non-attempters. Our regularized logistic regression model demonstrated an accuracy of 67% and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.71, while the random forest model demonstrated 66% accuracy and an AUC of 0.67. Support vector classifier (SVC) model demonstrated and accuracy of 67% and an AUC of 0.70, and the elastic net model demonstrated and accuracy of 65% and an AUC of 0.71. Conclusion Machine learning algorithms offer a relatively successful method for incorporating many clinical features to predict individuals at risk for future suicide attempts. Increased performance of these models using clinically relevant variables offers the potential to facilitate early treatment and intervention to prevent future suicide attempts.

Objective
Cognitive impairment (CI) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) negatively impacts health‐related quality of life leading to activity limitations. This qualitative study aimed to (1) ...explore the effect of SLE‐related CI on activities of daily living and life role participation and (2) describe factors influencing activity restriction and life role participation.
Methods
Semistructured, in‐depth interviews of lived experience of CI in SLE were conducted with 24 participants with SLE. Sociodemographic and clinical data, and objective and subjective cognitive function, were collected to characterize participants. A qualitative thematic content analysis was undertaken guided by a framework analytical approach.
Results
Participants reported problems in multiple cognitive domains, with multiple perceived causes. CI was felt to impact work, social, domestic, and family life, health, and independence. Five overarching themes were represented in the data: (1) characterization of SLE‐reported CI, (2) perceived cause of CI, (3) perceived impact of CI on activities of daily living and life role participation, (4) adaptations for managing CI, and (5) influence of CI adaptations on activities of daily living and life role participation.
Conclusion
This study provides a better understanding of the patient experience of CI in SLE, how it impacts their lives, and what coping strategies they employ. It highlights the long‐term challenges those with CI in SLE undergo and provides evidence for the urgent need to implement multidisciplinary treatment options. When managing CI, it may be beneficial to evaluate and understand available psychosocial support resources to help identify and reinforce relevant adaptations to improve health‐related quality of life.

Homelessness is an important risk factor for gender-based violence (GBV), particularly among youth, and disproportionally affects women and girls. Survivors of GBV experience enduring and severe ...physical, psychological, and sexual health problems. Although key elements in service delivery for survivors of GBV have been identified, little is known about outcomes of community-based programs aiming to assist homeless and unstably housed youth experiencing GBV. This longitudinal study aimed to quantitatively evaluate changes in mental health and well-being outcomes in female identified youth experiencing GBV and homelessness, 12 months after enrolment in a community-based, trauma-informed, brief group psychoeducation intervention. Standardized survey measures were administered at baseline, 6 and 12 months for 70 participants, recruited between February 2017 and April 2019, assessing quality of life, psychological distress, traumatic symptoms, substance use, resilience, victimization, and sense of mastery. Linear mixed models were used to examine longitudinal changes in quality of life as well as secondary outcomes among study participants. After 12 months, quality of life increased significantly among participants (
= 0.009), and the 12-month victimization score was significantly decreased relative to baseline (
= 0.05). Changes in other outcomes were not statistically significant. Findings suggest that community-based brief group psychoeducation interventions may be a promising approach to improving outcomes for this disadvantaged population.
Autistic individuals often experience a wide range of barriers and challenges with employment across their lifetime. Despite their strengths and abilities to contribute to the workforce, many ...individuals experience unemployment, underemployment and malemployment. However, current supports and services are often inadequate to meet their needs. To allow autistic people to achieve vocational success, we explore four contributors to employment and expand upon the issues and potential solutions to each. These positions include the importance of family support and its consideration in the application of vocational support interventions, addressing transitional needs for autistic youth, building employer capacity, and conducting research that advises the development of meaningful programs and policies. By advocating for these positions, we aim to foster greater inclusivity and support for individuals with ASD in the workplace.
Home care rehabilitation professionals (hcRPs) provide health services for clients with a broad range of medical conditions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, home care rehabilitation professionals ...experienced exacerbations of pre-existing work-related stressors, increased risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus, reduced resource availability, greater workloads, and staffing shortages. The primary aim of this study was to examine the experience and impact of occupational and mental stress on hcRPs working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 hcRPs working in Ontario, Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Inductive thematic analysis was used to interpret and organize the data into conceptualized themes. Interview data was organized into three themes: (a) unique challenges of a home care rehabilitation professional, (b) COVID-19 exacerbations of home care occupational and mental stress, and (c) personal and workplace coping strategies. Many participants reported reducing their hours or taking on adjunctive roles in different clinical settings outside of home care due to work-related stress exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. With a focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the practice of home care, this study provides a unique perspective on the challenges experienced by hcRPs during an emergent and evolving global public health concern. The exploratory nature of this research works towards providing a framework of factors to be addressed when creating sustainable healthcare interventions, as well as recommendations to support hcRPs to benefit both the community and health-care providers.

(i) Background: Working in the electrical and plumbing sectors is physically demanding, and the incidence of physical injury and work disability is high. This study aimed to assess the mental health ...and well-being of skilled trades workers working in the electrical and plumbing sectors; (ii) Methods: Forty participants completed an online survey assessing burnout, work-related factors, and mental health issues. Data were analyzed to determine the association between demographics, the availability, and importance of work-related factors, and burnout using a two-sample Mann-Whitney U test; (iii) Results: Our findings showed that among the work-related factors, workplace safety, family commitments, income and benefits, and full-time employment opportunities might be crucial factors to keep study participants working at their current position. Financial support for external training, which was found to be the most important factor in preventing colleague-related burnout, was available to the satisfaction of approximately 50% of the participants; (iv) Conclusion: Work-related factors such as workplace safety and the availability and support for external training may be protective against all types of burnout among this population. Future studies may consider a larger sample size with a more diverse group of participants and perform an intersectional analysis to incorporate minority identities in the analyses.

Treatment resistance is a common issue among schizophrenia patients undergoing antipsychotic treatment. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) guidelines, treatment-resistant status ...is defined as little or no symptom reduction to at least two antipsychotics at a therapeutic dose for a trial of at least six weeks. The aim of the current study is to determine whether ethnicity and migration are associated with treatment resistance.
In a sample of 251 participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, we conducted cross-sectional assessments to collect information regarding self-identified ethnicity, immigration and treatment history. Ancestry was identified using 292 markers overlapping with the HapMap project. Using a regression analysis, we tested whether a history of migration, ethnicity or genetic ancestry were predictive of treatment resistance.
Our logistic regression model revealed no significant association between immigration (OR = 0.04; 95%CI = 0.35–3.07; p = 0.93) and treatment resistant schizophrenia. White Europeans did not show significant association with resistance status regardless of whether ethnicity was determined by self-report (OR = 1.89; 95%CI = 0.89–4.20; p = 0.105) or genetic analysis (OR = −0.73; 95%CI = −0.18–2.97; p = 0.667).
Neither ethnicity nor migrant status was significantly associated with treatment resistance in this Canadian study. However, these conclusions are limited by the small sample size of our investigation.
•10-30% of schizophrenia patients are treatment resistant and up to a further 30% are partially responsive to the treatments.•Neither self-report ethnicity nor migration was significantly correlated with treatment resistance.•Genetically determined Asian ancestry was associated with resistance status.
