This review introduces, defines and critically reviews a number of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters with specific reference to those derived from continuous excitation chlorophyll fluorescence. A ...number of common issues and criticisms are addressed. The parameters fluorescence origin (F0) and the performance indices (PI) are discussed as examples. This review attempts to unify definitions for the wide range of parameters available for measuring plant vitality, facilitating their calculation and use.

AbstractThis study presents a critical review of disclosed, documented, and malicious cybersecurity incidents in the water sector to inform safeguarding efforts against cybersecurity threats. The ...review is presented within a technical context of industrial control system architectures, attack-defense models, and security solutions. Fifteen incidents were selected and analyzed through a search strategy that included a variety of public information sources ranging from federal investigation reports to scientific papers. For each individual incident, the situation, response, remediation, and lessons learned were compiled and described. The findings of this review indicate an increase in the frequency, diversity, and complexity of cyberthreats to the water sector. Although the emergence of new threats, such as ransomware or cryptojacking, was found, a recurrence of similar vulnerabilities and threats, such as insider threats, was also evident, emphasizing the need for an adaptive, cooperative, and comprehensive approach to water cyberdefense.
Incidents to pipes cause damage in water distribution systems (WDS) and access to all parts of the WDS is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose an integrated wireless robotic system for ...in-pipe missions that includes an agile, maneuverable, and size-adaptable (9-in to 22-in) in-pipe robot, "SmartCrawler", with 1.56 m/s maximum speed. We develop a two-phase motion control algorithm that enables reliable motion in straight and rotation in non-straight configurations of in-service WDS. We also propose a bi-directional wireless sensor module based on active radio frequency identification (RFID) working in 434 MHz carrier frequency and 120 kbps for up to 5 sensor measurements to enable wireless underground communication with the burial depth of 1.5 m. The integration of the proposed wireless sensor module and the two-phase motion controller demonstrates promising results for wireless control of the in-pipe robot and multi-parameter sensor transmission for in-pipe missions.

Understanding the structure of messenger RNA (mRNA) lipid nanoparticles, and specifically the microenvironment of the mRNA molecules within these entities, is fundamental to advancing their ...biomedical potential. Here, we show that a permeating cationic dye, thionine, can serve as a cryogenic electron microscopy contrasting agent by binding selectively to encapsulated mRNA without disturbing lipid nanoparticle morphology. Cryo-electron microscopy images identify the mRNA location, revealing that mRNA may exist within solvent-filled cavities or may be substantially lipid associated.

MXenes are novel 2D transition metal carbides with metallic conductivity and hydrophilic surfaces, which have highly active 2D surfaces and can act as a promising new type of electrode material; ...however, their low capacity and irreversible self-restacking limit their practicality and development. This paper presents a novel method for preparing an MXene-polyoxometalate (POM) nanohybrid using poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as the linker. The electrostatic interactions, chemical structure, and morphology of this nanohybrid are systematically characterized and have indicated that the MXene-PIL-POM nanohybrid provides the uniform distribution of POM nanoparticles on the MXene nanosheets and exhibits excellent electrochemical activity and stability due to the use of PIL as the linker and stabilizer. The prepared MXene-PIL-POM nanohybrid, used as an electrode, displayed a definite improvement in electrochemical performance with the specific capacitance of 384.6 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, which is about three-fold higher than that of the MXene electrode. The MXene-PIL-POM electrode also achieved a good rate performance (90.5% retention at 10 A g-1) and a long cycling life (91.7% maintenance of specific capacitance at a constant current density of 4 A g-1 after 2000 cycles). The proposed nanohybrid structure capitalizes on the enhancement of the redox reactions of POM through the PIL linkers to facilitate charge transfer and provide efficient ion transfer channels in the nanohybrid.

A novel graphene oxide (GO)-polyoxometalate (POM) nanohybrid is prepared using gemini surfactants (Gem) as stabilizers for the first time. The electrostatic interactions, chemical structure, and morphology of this Gem-GO-POM nanohybrid are systematically characterized, which have been manifested that the Gem-GO-POM nanohybrid provides uniform distribution of POM nanoparticles on the GO nanosheets and exhibits excellent electrochemical activity and stability due to the use of Gem as linkers and stabilizers. The prepared Gem-GO-POM catalyst used as electrode displays an enhanced electro-oxidation of nitrite compared with pure GO and DTAB-GO-POM hybrid using dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) as stabilizers. The proposed nanohybrid structure capitalizes on the enhancing in the oxidation reactions ability of the POM through the Gem linkers to provide more binding sites for POM on the surface of GO.

In this paper, we propose an operation procedure for our previously developed in-pipe robotic system that is used for water quality monitoring in water distribution systems (WDS). The proposed ...operation procedure synchronizes a developed wireless communication system that is suitable for harsh environments of soil, water, and rock with a multi-phase control algorithm. The new "wireless control algorithm" facilitates "smart navigation" and "near real-time wireless data transmission" during operation for our in-pipe robot in WDS. The smart navigation enables the robot to pass through different configurations of the pipeline with long inspection capability with a battery in which is mounted on the robot. To this end, we have divided the operation procedure into five steps that assign a specific motion control phase and wireless communication task to the robot. We describe each step and the algorithm associated with that step in this paper. The proposed robotic system defines the configuration type in each pipeline with the pre-programmed pipeline map that is given to the robot before the operation and the wireless communication system. The wireless communication system includes some relay nodes that perform bi-directional communication in the operation procedure. The developed wireless robotic system along with operation procedure facilitates localization and navigation for the robot toward long-distance inspection in WDS.
Rationale
Synthetic cathinones constitute a class of abused drugs that can act at dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin transporters (DAT, NET, and SERT, respectively). Intracranial ...self-stimulation (ICSS) is a preclinical procedure that can be used to evaluate abuse potential of drugs, and prior studies have indicated that abuse-related ICSS effects of monoamine-transporter substrates, including some synthetic cathinones, are positively correlated with drug selectivity for DAT vs. SERT. Abuse potential of drugs can also be influenced by regimens of repeated drug exposure, but the role of repeated exposure on abuse-related ICSS effects of synthetic cathinones has not been examined.
Objectives
This study used ICSS to evaluate effects of repeated treatment with the DAT>SERT substrate methcathinone, the DAT<SERT substrate fenfluramine, and the DAT≈SERT substrate mephedrone.
Methods
Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained in a frequency-rate ICSS procedure, and different groups were used to evaluate effects of methcathinone, mephedrone, and fenfluramine before, during, and after regimens of repeated treatment with the designated drug.
Results
Before repeated treatment, methcathinone produced dose-dependent and abuse-related ICSS facilitation, fenfluramine produced dose-dependent ICSS depression, and mephedrone produced mixed effects that included both facilitation and depression. Chronic treatment produced no change in effects of methcathinone, but complete tolerance to effects of fenfluramine. For mephedrone, chronic treatment produced partial tolerance to ICSS depression and enhanced expression of ICSS facilitation.
Conclusions
Repeated exposure to mixed-action DAT≈SERT substrates such as mephedrone can result in increased abuse potential due to sustained expression of DAT-mediated abuse-related effects and tolerance to SERT-mediated abuse-limiting effects.

The oxidation state of chromium in contaminated soils is an important indicator of toxicity and potential mobility. Chromium in the hexavalent state is highly toxic and soluble, whereas the trivalent ...state is much less toxic and relatively insoluble. A laboratory study investigated the impact of growing plants and supplemental organic matter on chromium transport in soil. Plants alone had no appreciable effect on the chromium oxidation state in soil. Soil columns with higher organic content were associated with lower ratios of chromate:total chromium than the columns with lower organic matter. Analyses of column leachate, plant biomass, and soil indicate that more chromium leaching occurred in the vegetated, low organic columns. Retention of Cr in the soils was correlated to the Cr(III) content. Plant uptake of chromium accounted for less than 1% of the chromium removed from the soil. Overall, the addition of organic matter had the strongest influence on chromium mobility.
