It convincingly illustrates the different dynamics related to the materiality of this object that contributed to “glocal” knowledge production. Brazilian offshore potential exploration is still in its early stages, with no single offshore park in operation or being implemented. Unlike the already identified onshore wind potential—with over ...14 GW installed in the form of onshore wind turbines—offshore wind potential research is absent and restricted to limited areas. In this context, this study aims to identify offshore wind potential throughout the Brazilian coast for electricity generation. The research method took into account the average annual wind velocity records as 100 m/s, as well as bathymetry and the distance from the coast baseline, to classify areas displaying the greatest potential, applying an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to the geographic information system for the identification of potential offshore wind energy exploration sites. Environmental conservation units were considered exclusion areas. The installable capacity using aerogenerators was estimated at 3 TW, while an annual average power production of 14,800 TWh was calculated for the sum of the viable areas. These results demonstrate that the wind potential identified throughout the Brazilian coast provides the conditions for significant energy sector development. To this end, it is necessary to establish an ecological economic zoning of the areas displaying the greatest potential identified herein for the beginning of offshore exploration in Brazil.

Paraneoplastic conditions such as cancer cachexia are often exacerbated by chemotherapy, which affects the patient's quality of life as well as the response to therapy. The aim of this narrative ...review was to overview the body-composition-related changes and molecular effects of different chemotherapy agents used in cancer treatment on skeletal-muscle remodeling. A literature search was performed using the Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct databases and a total of 77 papers was retrieved. In general, the literature survey showed that the molecular changes induced by chemotherapy in skeletal muscle have been studied mainly in animal models and mostly in non-tumor-bearing rodents, whereas clinical studies have essentially assessed changes in body composition by computerized tomography. Data from preclinical studies showed that chemotherapy modulates several molecular pathways in skeletal muscle, including the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, autophagy, IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR, IL-6/JAK/STAT, and NF-κB pathway; however, the newest chemotherapy agents are underexplored. In conclusion, chemotherapy exacerbates skeletal-muscle wasting in cancer patients; however, the incomplete characterization of the chemotherapy-related molecular effects on skeletal muscle makes the development of new preventive anti-wasting strategies difficult. Therefore, further investigation on molecular mechanisms and clinical studies are necessary.
Oil wealth can foster social inequality if not properly managed. This is due to the migration of production factors from different economic activities to the oil sector. As a result, unemployment, ...poverty, political instability, a reduction in development, among other undesirable effects on society, may arise. With that in mind, this research evaluates the government’s role in the socioeconomic development of the oil producing municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), the largest onshore producer in Brazil. The research uses panel regression as it allows broad analyses of the space and time dimensions to be performed. In addition, it relies on statistical testing at all stages to make the research analysis more appropriate and consistent. The proposed model revealed better socioeconomic development indicators in municipalities where the local Government made public savings as reserve funds. Furthermore, the results show that appropriate public savings management allows municipal governments to design public policies to provide future generations with socioeconomic benefits, in line with the purpose of royalties.

Urban mobility via public transport is currently one of the major challenges facing policymakers and residents. The increasing demand for transport, the growing number of vehicles on the road, and ...the improvement of road infrastructure in large cities are some of the trends that need to be addressed by government agencies and society as a whole. Public transport services should play an important role, providing high quality services for users, being more attractive to potential users, and providing an efficient use of urban space. However it is necessary to understand how users evaluate the available services by evaluating the objective and subjective aspects involved in the perception of service quality. The present study aims to develop a multi-criteria model to assess urban public transport, with an approach centered on user perceptions. Through the use of multi-criteria evaluation, it is possible to identify the objective and subjective factors that determine a user’s opinion of the service, enabling improvements. The study is applied in a specific transport system, the Integrated Public Transport System (SIT), implemented in Florianópolis and other Brazilian cities.

Periodically, humanity is often faced with new and emerging viruses that can be a significant global threat. It has already been over a century post-the Spanish Flu pandemic, and we are witnessing a ...new type of coronavirus, the SARS-CoV-2, which is responsible for Covid-19. It emerged from the city of Wuhan (China) in December 2019, and within a few months, the virus propagated itself globally now resulting more than 50 million cases with over 1 million deaths. The high infection rates coupled with dynamic population movement demands for tools, especially within a Brazilian context, that will support health managers to develop policies for controlling and combating the new virus.
In this work, we propose a tool for real-time spatio-temporal analysis using a machine learning approach. The COVID-SGIS system brings together routinely collected health data on Covid-19 distributed across public health systems in Brazil, as well as taking to under consideration the geographic and time-dependent features of Covid-19 so as to make spatio-temporal predictions. The data are sub-divided by federative unit and municipality. In our case study, we made spatio-temporal predictions of the distribution of cases and deaths in Brazil and in each federative unit. Four regression methods were investigated: linear regression, support vector machines (polynomial kernels and RBF), multilayer perceptrons, and random forests. We use the percentage RMSE and the correlation coefficient as quality metrics.
For qualitative evaluation, we made spatio-temporal predictions for the period from 25 to 27 May 2020. Considering qualitatively and quantitatively the case of the State of Pernambuco and Brazil as a whole, linear regression presented the best prediction results (thematic maps with good data distribution, correlation coefficient >0.99 and RMSE (%) <4% for Pernambuco and around 5% for Brazil) with low training time: 0.00; 0.04 ms, CI 95%.
Spatio-temporal analysis provided a broader assessment of those in the regions where the accumulated confirmed cases of Covid-19 were concentrated. It was possible to differentiate in the thematic maps the regions with the highest concentration of cases from the regions with low concentration and regions in the transition range. This approach is fundamental to support health managers and epidemiologists to elaborate policies and plans to control the Covid-19 pandemics.
Carvacrol (CARV), has been shown to possess various pharmacological properties, especially in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. We evaluated the antihypertensive effect of the CARV free and ...encapsulation of CARV in β‐cyclodextrin (CARV/β‐CD), and whether CARV/β‐CD is able to improve the antihypertensive effects of CARV free in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The rats were randomly divided into four groups, each treated daily for 21 days and the mean arterial pressure and heart rate was measured every 5 days: group 1, Wistar‐vehicle solution; group 2, SHR‐vehicle; group 3, SHR‐CARV 50 mg/kg/d; and group 4, CARV/β‐CD 50 mg/kg/d. After 21 days of treatment, the mesenteric artery from treated animals was tested for phenylephrine (Phe) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) sensitivity. In addition, administration of CARV/β‐CD induced important antihypertensive activity when compared with the uncomplexed form, reducing the progression of arterial hypertension in SHR. Moreover, pharmacological potency to Phe in the SHR‐CARV and CARV/β‐CD groups was increased, approaching values expressed in the Wistar‐vehicle. Furthermore, CARV/β‐CD reduced the production of the pro‐inflammatory mediator, IL‐1β, and increased anti‐inflammatory cytokine, IL‐10. Together, these results produced evidence that the encapsulation of CARV in β‐CD can improve cardiovascular activity, showing potential anti‐inflammatory and antihypertensive effects.
The encapsulation of carvacrol in β‐cyclodextrin demonstrated an enhanced antihypertensive effect; CARV/β‐CD reduced the production of the pro‐inflammatory mediator and increased anti‐inflammatory cytokine; β‐CD may be an important tool to improve the cardiovascular activity of carvacrol.

Platypnoea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS) is a rare condition characterised by the association of dyspnoea and arterial oxygen desaturation induced by standing and relieved by recumbency. The precise ...mechanism remains poorly understood, but it appears to involve both anatomical and functional components producing a significant right-to-left shunting under certain postural conditions. This syndrome is associated with either intracardiac or extracardiac aetiologies, and the diagnosis depends on high clinical suspicion. Intracardiac shunt is the most common cause of POS and can be identified through echocardiography with bubble study. We report the case of a patient with POS secondary to a paradoxical shunt through the patent foramen oval, whose definitive diagnosis was only possible with contrasted transthoracic echocardiography in the sitting and standing positions.
The present study deals with a statistical analysis of the production process in an organization in the food sector, specifically, in the branch of roots. In addition, this study is characterized by ...the use of a hybrid analysis with the fusion of qualitative and quantitative aspects in order to improve the generation of knowledge as well as to facilitate the interpretation of the results obtained. As a work methodology, the control chart by variable was developed from data collected during visits to the organization. The study also carries out an approach on the capacity indexes from the perspective of the cassava packaging process as well as an analysis of the percentage of items outside the specifications. It is worth mentioning the use of the Ishikawa diagram to identify root causes of process variability, in addition to proposing corrective measures for such causes. Finally, according to the analyzes carried out, the organization in question presented an efficient and quality product packaging process, since all samples were within the control limits established statistically and the percentage of items outside the specifications was showed reduced, meaning only approximately 3%.
