Abstract In Brazil, women make up the majority of digital game players, but they are not highly represented in the industry’s development and programming workforce, a fact that is common to other STEM careers. Considering this contradiction, a qualitative study with 22 women who work in this market as programmers sought to identify the barriers to increasing female representation in game development in the country. The results show that there are six types of barriers that begin as soon as the course is chosen and persist more intensely in the job market, and the main one is the lack of credibility in terms of technical knowledge.

In Dec 2020 Brazil became one of the worldwide epicenters of the COVID-19 pandemic with more than 7.2M reported cases. Brazil has a large territory with unequal distribution of healthcare resources ...including physicians. Resource limitation has been one of the main factors hampering Brazil's response to the COVID-19 crisis. Telemedicine has been an effective approach for COVID-19 management as it allows to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and provides support to remote rural locations. Here we present the analyses of teleconsultations from a countrywide telemedicine service (TelessáudeRS-UFRGS, TRS), that provides physician-to-physician remote support during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. We performed a descriptive analysis of the teleconsultation incoming calls and a text analysis from the call transcripts. Our findings indicate that TRS teleconsultations in Brazil experienced an exponential increment of 802.% during a period of 6 days, after the first death due to COVID-19 was reported. However, the number of teleconsultations cases decreased over time, despite the number of reported COVID-19 cases continuously increasing. The results also showed that physicians in low-income municipalities, based on GDP per capita, are less likely to consult the telemedicine service despite facing higher rates of COVID-19 cases. The text analysis of call transcripts from medical teleconsultations showed that the main concern of physicians were "asymptomatic" patients. We suggest an immediate reinforcement of telehealth services in the regions of lower income as a strategy to support COVID-19 management.

A DSS integrating empty and full containers transshipment operations is presented, addressing the typically unbalanced export/import containers trading problem. The problem is modeled as a network, ...where nodes represent customers, leasing companies, harbors and warehouses, while arcs represent transportation routes. The underlying mathematical model operates in stages, first prioritizing and adjusting full containers demands considering available empty containers supplies, and then statically optimizing costs. Transportation routes are registered and dynamically controlled, cyclically, for a given time horizon. The DSS is flexible, allowing several parameters to be configured. Experimental examples using randomly generated parameters were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the system.

News recommendations distinguishes from general content recommendations as it takes in consideration news freshness, sparsity, monotony and time. Recent works approach these features using hybrid ...Collaborative-Content-based Filtering methods, adapting clustering techniques to handle sparsity and monotony without considering the effects that different clustering methods may have over recommendation results. Such studies often evaluate the results of varying different parameters individually, ignoring possible interaction effects between them. They also base their results on metrics such as accuracy and recall that are sensitive to bias. To investigate the importance of clustering method selection to News Recommender System results we evaluated the effects of different traditional techniques in recommending news articles. We implemented an algorithm that used a hybrid Collaborative-Content-based Filtering method to incorporate user behavior, user interest, article popularity and time effect. The system uses an article selection method that built the recommendation set based on content features. With this algorithm, we examined the existence of interaction effects between the input parameters. We used a Gaussian regression process to explore the response surface while sequentially optimizing parameters. To avoid being misled by underlying biases we used Informedness, an accuracy metric that captures both positive and negative information from prediction results. Our results demonstrated that different clustering methods had a significant influence on the recommendation results. It was also found that a traditional hierarchical method outperformed optimization methods with important performance improvement. In addition, we demonstrated that parameters may interact with each other and that analyzing them separately may mislead interpretation.
•The clustering method choice considerably affects News Recommender Systems results.•Interaction effect may mislead results when single parameter optimization is used.•Traditional hierarchical clustering methods may outperform optimization methods.

Business Analytics leverages value from data, thus being an important tool for the decisionmaking process. However, the presence of data in different formats is a new challenge for analysis. Textual ...data has been drawing organizational attention as thousands of people express themselves daily in text, like the description of customer perceptions in the tourism and hospitality area. Despite the relevance of customer data in textual format to support decision making of hotel managers, its use is still modest, given the difficulty of analyzing and interpreting the large amounts of data. Our objective is to identify the main evaluation topics presented in online guest reviews and reveal changes throughout the years. We worked with 23,229 hotel reviews collected from TripAdvisor website through WebScrapping packages in R, and used a text mining approach (Latent Semantic Analysis) to analyze the data. This contributes with practical implications to hotel managers by demonstrating the applicability of text data and tools based on open-source solutions and by providing insights about the data and assisting in the decision-making process. This article also contributes in presenting a stepwise text analysis, including capturing, cleaning and formatting publicly available data for organizational specialists.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a well-characterized oncological disease in which virtually all patients possess a translocation (9;22) that generates the tyrosine kinase
protein. This ...translocation represents one of the milestones in molecular oncology in terms of both diagnostic and prognostic evaluations. The molecular detection of the
transcription is a required factor for CML diagnosis, and its molecular quantification is essential for assessing treatment options and clinical approaches. In the CML molecular context, point mutations on the
gene are also a challenge for clinical guidelines because several mutations are responsible for tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance, indicating that a change may be necessary in the treatment protocol. So far, the European LeukemiaNet and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) have presented international guidelines on CML molecular approaches, especially those related to
expression. In this study, we show almost three years' worth of data regarding the clinical treatment of CML patients at the Erasto Gaertner Hospital, Curitiba, Brazil. These data primarily comprise 155 patients and 532 clinical samples.
quantification by a duplex-one-step RT-qPCR and
mutations detection were conducted. Furthermore, digital PCR for both
expression and
mutations were conducted in a sub-cohort. This manuscript describes and discusses the clinical importance and relevance of molecular biology testing in Brazilian CML patients, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness.

IT governance has become an important concern for business, receiving great attention from both practitioners and academics. Although some authors have stated that effective IT governance is crucial ...for any organization to achieve its corporate goals, little academic research is available that empirically supports the assumptions about the factors that determine the effectiveness of IT governance. In this sense, we proposed and examined a theoretical model that explains and predicts IT governance effectiveness, linking its domains and mechanisms. We empirically tested our hypotheses based on survey data gathered from 87 CIOs of large Brazilian companies. The results have implications about how IT governance domains and the adoption of different IT governance mechanisms can affect IT governance effectiveness, bringing implications from theory and practice.
Recently, there has been a great deal of interest on the part of many organizations in the concept of IT governance in order to justify IT investments. Some studies have shown that companies, which ...have good IT governance models, generate higher returns on their IT investments than their competitors. However, there is a lack of scientific research confirming that effective IT governance leads to better financial performance. In this paper, we attempt to determine whether companies that have adopted IT governance mechanisms have improved their financial performance, by measuring pre and post adoption performance indicators. We found that companies that adopted IT governance practices improved their performance when compared to the control group, particularly in relation to profitability. Furthermore, we found that the effects of adopting IT governance mechanisms on financial performance were more pronounced in the year following adoption than in the year in which they were adopted.
•COBIT and ITIL are the IT governance drivers most frequently cited by the studied companies.•IT governance adopters noticeably improved their organizational performance.•Firms that had adopted IT governance mechanisms made gains in terms of efficiency.•The impact of IT governance on performance is stronger in the year following adoption.

► We model a decision support system for farming system production. ► The inputs are based on meteorological, pasture, animal, crop, and soil conditions. ► The combination of all inputs makes the ...farm structure and originates the outputs. ► The outputs are based on economic, environmental, and risk analyses.
Information systems used in farming systems are characterized by high complexity. They should be composed of inter-related economic and biological components capable of working in a dynamic and continuous manner, receiving data and producing results within an organized production process. Taking this complexity into account, in this study we propose a novel conceptual macromodel with a system approach of the agricultural and livestock production environment to be adopted as information system in order to support the decision making process. This model is capable of representing the innumerable aspects of a farm production system aiming to help farm producers understand and manage their production system. To better understand the general model and its nuances, several submodels (input models) were built based on adaptation of pre-existing research, among which we mention: meteorological, pasture, animal, crop–livestock integration, crop, soil, pasture-animal, and pasture-soil submodels. The combination of these submodels originates and configures the farm production system structure. Among the main outputs of the proposed model are the economic results, based on agricultural and livestock productivity, the environmental impact assessment, and the analysis of operational risk. A qualitative approach was used with an exploratory descriptive design to carry out this research, based on literature review, interviews, and meetings with experts to refine and validate the proposed model. The refinement of the conceptual model was based on the Delphi method, which allowed the collection of data and peculiarities of the object under study, guided its development to achieve the goals of this research, and allowed the register of several issues for further studies. The validation of the model, also using a qualitative approach, was performed employing conceptual, face, and subsystem validation procedures, also applying the Delphi method. This way, we aimed to identify the weak and strong points of our conceptual model, its main shortcomings and limitations, and the variables that should be optimized, in theoretical and practical perspectives, so that this model can be improved.
