We explore the possibility that the anomalous split in the Subgiant branch of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 is due to the presence of two distinct stellar populations with very different ...initial metal mixtures: a normal alpha-enhanced component, and one characterized by strong anticorrelations among the CNONa abundances, with a total CNO abundance increased by a factor of two. We test this hypothesis taking into account various empirical constraints, and conclude that the two populations should be approximately coeval, with the same initial He-content. More high-resolution spectroscopical measurements of heavy elements -- and in particular of the CNO sum -- for this cluster are necessary to prove (or disprove) this scenario.
The solar-age open cluster M67 (C0847+120, NGC2682) is a touchstone in studies of the old Galactic disk. Despite its outstanding role, the census of cluster membership for M67 at fainter magnitudes ...and their properties are not well-established. Using the proprietary and archival ESO data, we have obtained astrometric, photometric, and radial velocities of stars in a 34'x 33' field centered on the old open cluster M67. The two-epoch archival observations separated by 4 years and acquired with the Wide Field Imager at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope have been reduced with our new astrometric techniques, as described in the first paper of this series. The same observations served to derive calibrated BVI photometry in M67. Radial velocities were measured using the archival and new spectroscopic data obtained at VLT. We have determined relative proper motions and membership probabilities for ~2,400 stars. The precision of proper motions for optimally exposed stars is ~2 mas/yr, gradually degrading down to ~5 mas/yr at V= 20. Our relatively precise proper motions at V>16 are first obtained in this magnitude range for M67. Radial velocities are measured for 211 stars in the same field. We also present a detailed comparison with recent theoretical isochrones from several independent groups. For M67 area we provide positions, calibrated BVI photometry, relative proper motions, membership probabilities, and radial velocities. We demonstrate that the ground-based CCD mosaic observations just a few years apart are producing proper motions, allowing a reliable membership determination. We produced a catalogue that is made electronically available to the astronomical community.
We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey will take 1929 ...hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010-2014), covering ~10^9 point sources across an area of 520 deg^2, including 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9-2.5 microns) and a catalogue of more than 10^6 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars, and Cepheids. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, INTEGRAL, WISE, Fermi LAT, XMM-Newton, GAIA and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. This public survey will provide data available to the whole community and therefore will enable further studies of the history of the Milky Way, its globular cluster evolution, and the population census of the Galactic Bulge and center, as well as the investigations of the star forming regions in the disk. The combined variable star catalogues will have important implications for theoretical investigations of pulsation properties of stars.
AIMS. We present abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 105 isolated red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 6121 (M4). Our aim is to study its star ...population in the context of the multi-population phenomenon recently discovered to affect some Globular Clusters. METHODS. The data have been collected with FLAMES+UVES, at the ESO/VLT@UT2 telescope. Analysis was performed under LTE approximation for the following elements: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Ba, and NLTE corrections were applied to Na and Mg. Spectroscopic data were coupled with high-precision wide-field UBVI\(_{\rm C}\) photometry from WFI@2.2m telescope and infrared JHK photometry from 2MASS. RESULTS: We derived an average \(\rm {Fe/H}=-1.07\pm0.01\) (internal error), and an \(\alpha\) enhancement of \(\rm {\alpha/Fe}=+0.39\pm0.05\) dex (internal error). We confirm the presence of an extended Na-O anticorrelation, and find two distinct groups of stars with significantly different Na and O content. We find no evidence of a Mg-Al anticorrelation. By coupling our results with previous studies on the CN band strength, we find that the CN strong stars have higher Na and Al content and are more O depleted than the CN weak ones. The two groups of Na-rich, CN-strong and Na-poor, CN-weak stars populate two different regions along the RGB. In the \(\rm {U}\) vs. \(\rm {U-B}\) color magnitude diagram the RGB spread is present rom the base of the RGB to the RGB-tip. Apparently, both spectroscopic and photometric results imply the presence of two stellar populations in M4. We briefly discuss the possible origin of these populations.
With archival and new Hubble Space Telescope observations we have refined the
space-velocity measurements of the stars in the central region of the remnant
of Tycho's supernova (SN) 1572, one of the ...historical Galactic Type Ia
supernova remnants (SNRs). We derived a proper motion for Tycho-G of
(mu_RA_cos_dec;mu_dec)=(-2.63;-3.98)+/-(0.06;0.04)formal
errors+/-(0.18;0.10)expected errors mas/yr. We also reconstruct the binary
orbit that Tycho-G should have followed if it were the surviving companion of
SN 1572. We redetermine the Ni abundance of this star and compare it with new
abundance data from stars of the Galactic disk, finding that Ni/Fe is about
1.7 sigma above the Galactic trend. From the high velocity (v_b = -50+/-14
km/s) of Tycho-G perpendicular to the Galactic plane, its metallicity, and its
Ni excess, we find the probability of its being a chance interloper to be P <
0.00037 at most. The projected rotational velocity of the star should be below
current observational limits. The projected position of Tycho-G is, within the
uncertainties, consistent with the centroid of the X-ray emission of Tycho's
SNR; moreover, its brightness is generally consistent with the post-explosion
evolution of the luminosity of a SN companion. Among the other 23 stars having
V<22 mag and located within 42 arcsec from the X-ray centroid, only 4 are at
distances compatible with that of the SNR, and none of them shows any
peculiarity. Therefore, if even Tycho-G is not the surviving companion of SN
1572, the absence of other viable candidates does favor the merging of two
white dwarfs as the producer of the SN.
Deep photometry of crowded fields, such as Galactic Globular Clusters, is severely limited by the actual resolution of ground-based telescopes. On the other hand, the Hubble Space Telescope does not ...provide the near-infrared (NIR) filters needed to allow large color baselines. In this work we aim at demonstrating how ground based observations can reach the required resolution when using Multi-Conjugated Adaptive Optic (MCAO) devices in the NIR, such as the experimental infrared camera (MAD) available on the VLT. This is particularly important since these corrections are planned to be available on all ground--based telescopes in the near future. We do this by combining the infrared photometry obtained by MAD/VLT with ACS/HST optical photometry of our scientific target, the bulge globular cluster NGC 6388, in which we imaged two fields. In particular, we constructed color-magnitude diagrams with an extremely wide color baseline in order to investigate the presence of multiple stellar populations in this cluster. From the analysis of the external field, observed with better seeing conditions, we derived the deepest optical-NIR CMD of NGC 6388 to date. The high-precision photometry reveals that two distinct sub-giant branches are clearly present in this cluster. We also use the CMD from the central region to estimate the distance ((m-M)=15.33) and the reddening (E(B-V)=0.38) for this cluster. We estimate the age to be ~11.5+/- 1.5 Gyr. The large relative-age error reflects the bimodal distribution of the SGB stars. This study clearly demonstrates how MCAO correction in the NIR bands implemented on ground based telescopes can complement the high-resolution optical data from HST.
The aim of this study was to review the experience of the Institut Gustave Roussy in 163 patients with malignant mesothelioma over a 9-year period. Data from seven consecutive prospective trials, ...four of chemo-immunotherapy and three of chemotherapy were reviewed. The rationale, methods and results of these trials are summarised and discussed. 98 patients were included in four phase II trials of chemo-immunotherapy whose common denominator was a combination of cisplatin and α-interferon. The response rate ranged from 15% to 40%. High-dose weekly cisplatin combined with α-interferon yielded the highest response rate but the toxicity of this regimen was considered unacceptable. Neither higher doses of α-interferon or the addition of mitomycin C or interleukin-2 to the regimen were able to enhance the activity of this combination. 18 patients were included in a paclitaxel–cisplatin phase II trial. The response rate was only 6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0–24) and toxicity was also significant. This regimen was, therefore, considered ineffective. Of 17 patients with mesothelioma included in a phase I trial that combined raltitrexed and oxaliplatin, 6 (35%) obtained a partial response. Responses were seen even in cisplatin-refractory mesothelioma. Preliminary results of a subsequent ongoing phase II trial using raltitrexed (3 mg/m
2) and oxaliplatin (130 mg/m
2) have confirmed this promising activity with a 30% (9/30) response rate (95% CI: 15–49). The tolerance of this outpatient regimen is acceptable (no significant haematological toxicity and no alopecia) and compares favourably with that of our previous regimens. The final results concerning response and survival are required to confirm the efficacy of this combination. The preliminary results of two studies suggest promising activity with the combination of raltitrexed-oxaliplatin in malignant mesothelioma. The efficacy/toxicity ratio of this combination compares favourably with that of our previous chemotherapy and chemo-immunotherapy regimens.

The reported incidence of hereditary colorectal cancers (CRCs) is widely variable. The principal aim of the study was to prospectively evaluate the incidence of familial CRCs in a region of northern ...Italy using a standardized method. Consecutive CRC patients were prospectively enrolled from October 2002 to December 2003. Patients underwent a structured family history, the microsatellite instability (MSI) test and a screen for MUTYH mutations. Following family history patients were classified as belonging to high, moderate and mild risk families. Immunohistochemistry for MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PMS2 proteins and investigation for MLH1/MSH2 mutations, for MLH1 promoter methylation and for the V600E hotspot BRAF mutation were performed in high MSI (MSI-H) cases. Of the 430 patients enrolled, 17 (4%) were high risk 4 hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), 12 suspected HNPCC and 1 MUTYH-associated adenomatous polyposis coli (MAP), 53 moderate risk and 360 mild risk cases. The MSI test was performed on 393 tumors, and 46 (12%) of them showed MSI-H. In these patients, one MLH1 pathogenetic mutations and two MSH2 pathogenetic mutations were found. Thirty-two (70%) MSI-H cases demonstrated MLH1 methylation and/or BRAF mutation: None of them showed MLH1/MSH2 mutation. Two biallelic germline MUTYH mutations were found, one with clinical features of MAP. A strong family history of CRC was present in 4% of the enrolled cases; incidence of MLH1/MSH2 or MUTHY mutations was 1.3% and of MSI-H phenotype was 12%. MLH1 methylation and BRAF mutation can exclude 70% of MSI-H cases from gene sequencing.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

We have constructed the most-comprehensive catalog of photometry and proper motions ever assembled for a globular cluster (GC). The core of \(\omega\)Cen has been imaged over 650 times through WFC3's ...UVIS and IR channels for the purpose of detector calibration. There exist from 4 to over 60 exposures through each of 26 filters, stretching continuously from F225W in the UV to F160W in the infrared. Furthermore, the 11-year baseline between these data and a 2002 ACS survey has allowed us to more than double the proper-motion accuracy and triple the number of well-measured stars compared to our previous groundbreaking effort. This totally unprecedented complete spectral coverage for over 470,000 stars within the cluster's core, from the tip of the red-giant branch down to the white dwarfs, provides the best astro-photometric observational data base yet to understand the multiple-population phenomenon in any GC. In this first paper of the series we describe in detail the data-reduction processes and deliver the astro-photometric catalog to the astronomical community.
