Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious medical condition with a high prevalence, although diagnosis remains a challenge. Existing home sleep tests may provide acceptable diagnosis performance but ...have shown several limitations. In this retrospective study, we used 12,923 polysomnography recordings from six independent databases to develop and evaluate a deep learning model, called OxiNet, for the estimation of the apnea-hypopnea index from the oximetry signal. We evaluated OxiNet performance across ethnicity, age, sex, and comorbidity. OxiNet missed 0.2% of all test set moderate-to-severe OSA patients against 21% for the best benchmark.
The time variation between consecutive heartbeats is commonly referred to as heart rate variability (HRV). Loss of complexity in HRV has been documented in several cardiovascular diseases and has ...been associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanisms that control HRV are not well understood. Animal experiments are the key to investigating this question. However, to date, there are no standard open source tools for HRV analysis of mammalian electrocardiogram (ECG) data and no centralized public databases for researchers to access.
We created an open source software solution specifically designed for HRV analysis from ECG data of multiple mammals, including humans. We also created a set of public databases of mammalian ECG signals (dog, rabbit and mouse) with manually corrected R-peaks (>170,000 annotations) and signal quality annotations. The platform (software and databases) is called PhysioZoo.
PhysioZoo makes it possible to load ECG data and perform very accurate R-peak detection (
> 98%). It also allows the user to manually correct the R-peak locations and annotate low signal quality of the underlying ECG. PhysioZoo implements state of the art HRV measures adapted for different mammals (dogs, rabbits, and mice) and allows easy export of all computed measures together with standard data representation figures. PhysioZoo provides databases and standard ranges for all HRV measures computed on healthy, conscious humans, dogs, rabbits, and mice at rest. Study of these measures across different mammals can provide new insights into the complexity of heart rate dynamics across species.
PhysioZoo enables the standardization and reproducibility of HRV analysis in mammalian models through its open source code, freely available software, and open access databases. PhysioZoo will support and enable new investigations in mammalian HRV research. The source code and software are available on www.physiozoo.com.
Abstract
Use of non-stationary physiological signals for biometric verification, reduces the ability to forge. Such signals should be simple to acquire with inexpensive equipment. The beat-to-beat ...information embedded within the time intervals between consecutive heart beats is a non-stationary physiological signal; its potential for biometric verification has not been studied. This work introduces a biometric verification method termed “CompaRR”. Heartbeat was extracted from longitudinal recordings from 30 mice ranging from 6 to 24 months of age (equivalent to ~ 20–75 human years). Fifty heartbeats, which is close to resting human heartbeats in a minute, were sufficient for the verification task, achieving a minimal equal error rate of 0.21. When trained on 6-month-old mice and tested on unseen mice up to 18-months of age (equivalent to ~ 50 human years), no significant change in the verification performance was noted. Finally, when the model was trained on data from drug-treated mice, verification was still possible.

Nitrogen, although abundant in the atmosphere, is paradoxically a limited resource for multicellular organisms. In the Animalia, biological nitrogen fixation has solely been demonstrated in termites. ...We found that all individuals of field‐collected Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) harbour large diazotrophic enterobacterial populations that express dinitrogen reductase in the gut. Moreover, nitrogen fixation was demonstrated in isolated guts and in live flies and may significantly contribute to the fly's nitrogen intake. The presence of similar bacterial consortia in additional insect orders suggests that nitrogen fixation occurs in vast pools of terrestrial insects. On such a large scale, this phenomenon may have a considerable impact on the nitrogen cycle.

Female Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) oviposit in fruits, within which the larvae develop. This development is associated with rapid deterioration of the fruit, and frequently with ...invasion by secondary pests. Most research on the associations between medflies and microorganisms has focused on the bacteria inhabiting the digestive system of the adult fly, while the role of the fruit in mediating, amplifying or regulating the fruit fly microflora has been largely neglected. In this study, we examine the hypothesis that the host fruit plays a role in perpetuating the fly-associated bacterial community. Using direct and cultured-based approaches, we show that this community is composed in its very large majority of diazotrophic and pectinolytic Enterobacteriaceae. Our data suggest that this fly-associated enterobacterial community is vertically transmitted from the female parent to its offspring. During oviposition, bacteria are transferred to the fruit, establish and proliferate within it, causing its decay. These results show that the host fruit is indeed a central partner in the fruit fly-bacterial interaction as these transmitted bacteria are amplified by the fruit, and subsequently maintained throughout the fly's life. This enterobacterial community may contribute to the fly's nitrogen and carbon metabolism, affecting its development and ultimately, fitness.

Pseudomonas spp. form minor, common and stable communities within the medfly's gut. These include
P. aeruginosa, a known pathogen of arthropods. Experimental inoculations with high levels of
P. aeruginosa reduced the medfly's longevity while inoculations with members of the Enterobacteriaceae extended the fly's life.
Accordingly, we suggest that in addition to their possible contribution to the fly's nitrogen and carbon metabolism, development and copulatory success (as shown in previous studies), the Enterobacteriaceae community within the medfly's gut may also have an indirect contribution to host fitness by preventing the establishment or proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.

Liquid water has been known to occur beneath the Antarctic ice sheet for more than 40 years, but only recently have these subglacial aqueous environments been recognized as microbial ecosystems that ...may influence biogeochemical transformations on a global scale. Here we present the first geomicrobiological description of water and surficial sediments obtained from direct sampling of a subglacial Antarctic lake. Subglacial Lake Whillans (SLW) lies beneath approximately 800 m of ice on the lower portion of the Whillans Ice Stream (WIS) in West Antarctica and is part of an extensive and evolving subglacial drainage network. The water column of SLW contained metabolically active microorganisms and was derived primarily from glacial ice melt with solute sources from lithogenic weathering and a minor seawater component. Heterotrophic and autotrophic production data together with small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and biogeochemical data indicate that SLW is a chemosynthetically driven ecosystem inhabited by a diverse assemblage of bacteria and archaea. Our results confirm that aquatic environments beneath the Antarctic ice sheet support viable microbial ecosystems, corroborating previous reports suggesting that they contain globally relevant pools of carbon and microbes that can mobilize elements from the lithosphere and influence Southern Ocean geochemical and biological systems.

approach is valuable when exploring the mechanisms that govern the beating rate and rhythm of the sinoatrial node (SAN), the heart's primary pacemaker. SAN beating rate changes on a beat-to-beat basis. However, to date, there are no standard methods and tools for beating rate variability (BRV) analysis from electrograms (EGMs) collected from different mammals, and there is no centralized public database with such recordings.
We used EGM recordings obtained from control SAN tissues of rabbits (
= 9) and mice (
= 30) and from mouse SAN tissues (
= 6) that were exposed to drug intervention. The data were harnessed to develop a beat detector to derive the beat-to-beat interval time series from EGM recordings. We adapted BRV measures from heart rate variability and reported their range for rabbit and mouse.
The beat detector algorithm performed with 99% accuracy, sensitivity, and positive predictive value on the test (mouse) and validation (rabbit and mouse) sets. Differences in the frequency band cutoff were found between BRV of SAN tissue vs. heart rate variability (HRV) of
recordings. A significant reduction in power spectrum density existed in the high frequency band, and a relative increase was seen in the low and very low frequency bands. In isolated SAN, the larger animal had a slower beating rate but with lower BRV, which contrasted the phenomena reported for
analysis. Thus, the non-linear inverse relationship between the average HR and HRV is not maintained under
conditions. The beat detector, BRV measures, and databases were contributed to the open-source PhysioZoo software (available at: https://physiozoo.com/).
Our approach will enable standardization and reproducibility of BRV analysis in mammals. Different trends were found between beating rate and BRV or HRV in isolated SAN tissue vs. recordings collected under

Recent melt events on the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) accentuate the need to constrain estimates of sea level rise through improved characterization of meltwater pathways. This effort will require ...more precise estimates of the volume of water stored on the surface of the GrIS. We assessed the potential to obtain such information by mapping the bathymetry of supraglacial lakes and streams from WorldView2 (WV2) satellite images. Simultaneous in situ observations of depth and reflectance from two streams and a lake with measured depths up to 10.45 m were used to test a spectrally based depth retrieval algorithm. We performed optimal band ratio analysis (OBRA) of continuous field spectra and spectra convolved to the bands of the WV2, Landsat 7 (ETM+), MODIS, and ASTER sensors. The field spectra yielded a strong relationship with depth (R super(2) = 0.94), and OBRA R super(2) values were nearly as high (0.87-0.92) for convolved spectra, suggesting that these sensors' broader bands would be sufficient for depth retrieval. Our field measurements thus indicated that remote sensing of supraglacial bathymetry is not only feasible but potentially highly accurate. OBRA of spectra from 2 m-pixel WV2 images acquired within 3-72 h of our field observations produced an optimal R super(2) value of 0.92 and unbiased, precise depth estimates, with mean and root mean square errors < 1% and 10-25% of the mean depth. Bathymetric maps produced by applying OBRA relations revealed subtle features of lake and channel morphology. In addition to providing refined storage volume estimates for lakes of various sizes, this approach can help provide estimates of the transient flux of meltwater through streams.

To drive health innovation that meets the needs of all and democratize healthcare, there is a need to assess the generalization performance of deep learning (DL) algorithms across various ...distribution shifts to ensure that these algorithms are robust. This retrospective study is, to the best of our knowledge, an original attempt to develop and assess the generalization performance of a DL model for AF events detection from long term beat-to-beat intervals across geography, ages and sexes. The new recurrent DL model, denoted ArNet2, is developed on a large retrospective dataset of 2,147 patients totaling 51,386 h obtained from continuous electrocardiogram (ECG). The model's generalization is evaluated on manually annotated test sets from four centers (USA, Israel, Japan and China) totaling 402 patients. The model is further validated on a retrospective dataset of 1,825 consecutives Holter recordings from Israel. The model outperforms benchmark state-of-the-art models and generalized well across geography, ages and sexes. For the task of event detection ArNet2 performance was higher for female than male, higher for young adults (less than 61 years old) than other age groups and across geography. Finally, ArNet2 shows better performance for the test sets from the USA and China. The main finding explaining these variations is an impairment in performance in groups with a higher prevalence of atrial flutter (AFL). Our findings on the relative performance of ArNet2 across groups may have clinical implications on the choice of the preferred AF examination method to use relative to the group of interest.
