The hysteretic behavior of friction concave isolators is affected by the variability of the friction coefficient experienced during a seismic event. This variability is a combined function of axial ...load, sliding velocity and temperature rise at the sliding surface, the latter being responsible for significant friction degradation. Experimental testing and corresponding numerical models are usually focused on the monodirectional performance of the friction isolators, although multi-directional paths occur in a real earthquake scenario. In this paper, the thermo-mechanical coupled (TMC) response of friction concave isolators when subjected to bidirectional excitation is investigated in both an analytical and a numerical framework. First, a simplified phenomenological model is presented that accounts for the friction degradation due to the distance traveled via a macroscale cycling variable, based on the assumption of a uniform heat flux at the sliding interface. Then, a more sophisticated numerical investigation is performed via a TMC finite element (FE) model. A customized subroutine has been developed and implemented into the FE code to account for the local variation of the friction coefficient due to the local temperature rise and sliding velocity. The mutual interaction between mechanical and thermal response is incorporated in the proposed computational approach: the friction-induced temperature rise on the contact points and the consequent friction degradation caused by heating phenomena are analyzed as two interconnected phenomena in a recursive fashion. The friction coefficient law at the sliding interface is adjusted step-by-step and is different from node to node on the basis of the temperature distribution. Validated against experimental data, the two proposed models are used within a parametric study to scrutinize some interesting features observed in the thermo-mechanical response of friction isolators.

An experimental investigation on the mechanical response of confined pentamode lattices in the elastic and post-yield regimes is presented. An Electron Beam Melting facility is employed to additively ...manufacture pentamode lattices confined by terminal plates in a titanium alloy. The given experimental results show that the geometry of the microstructure, and the macroscopic aspect ratio of the confined lattices strongly influence the lateral and vertical stiffness properties of the structure. The post-elastic response of the analyzed materials features acceptable energy dissipation capacity. The presented results highlight several analogies between the mechanical response of confined pentamode lattices and that of elastomeric bearings formed by soft rubber pads and stiffening steel or fiber-reinforced composite layers. They pave the way to future studies on the use of pentamode materials for the fabrication of innovative seismic isolation devices and/or shear-wave band gap systems.

The increasing use of curved surface sliding bearings as seismic isolators benefits from the improvement of analytical models that can accurately capture their experimental performance and enhance ...the predictive capability of nonlinear response history analyses. The mathematical formulation proposed in this paper aims at addressing the variability of the coefficient of friction based on experimental data that can be retrieved from prototype tests on Curved Surface Sliders. The formulation accounts for variation in the coefficient of friction with the instantaneous change of axial load and sliding velocity at the contact interface, and the accumulated heat due to cyclic motion; furthermore, it incorporates new features such as the static friction developed in the transition from the pre-sliding phase to the dynamic sliding condition. The proposed model has been coded in the object-oriented finite element software OpenSees by modifying the standard SingleFPSimple3d element that describes the force – displacement relationship of a bearing comprising one concave sliding surface and a spherical articulation. The main novelties of the new CSSBearing_BVNC element are inclusion of the static friction before the breakaway and degradation of kinetic friction induced by the heat developed during the motion of the articulated slider. The primary assumptions in the development of the friction model and the verification of the newly developed element are validated by agreement with available data. A case study helps to demonstrate the improved prediction capability of the new bearing element over its standard counterpart when applied to real situations, such as estimating a +50% increase in isolator displacement, superstructure drift and base shear demand under high intensity earthquakes, and possible non-activation of the sliding isolators under weak or medium intensity earthquakes.

ABSTRACT
To meet the high calcium (Ca) demand during eggshell biomineralization (2 g of Ca per egg), laying hens develop specific metabolic regulations to maintain Ca homeostasis. The intake of Ca, ...its solubilization, and absorption capacity are enhanced at sexual maturity (SM). A better knowledge of the intestinal Ca transporters involved in their variations at this stage could indicate new nutritional strategies to enhance Ca digestive utilization. Transcellular Ca absorption pathway and its major player calbindin-D 28 K (CALB1) mediate a saturable transport, which has been extensively described in this model. Conversely, a contribution by the paracellular pathway involving non-saturable Ca transport through intercellular tight junction has also been suggested. The aim of the present study was to identify candidate genes of these two pathways and their patterns of expression, in immature pullets (12, 15, and 17 wk old) and mature laying hens (23 wk old) in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Using RT-qPCR, this study identifies 3 new candidate genes for transcellular, and 9 for paracellular Ca transport. A total of 5 candidates of the transcellular pathway, transient receptor potential cation channels subfamily C member 1 (TRPC1) and M member 7 (TRPM7); CALB1 and ATPase plasma membrane Ca2+ transporting 1 (ATP2B1) and ATPase plasma membrane Ca2+ transporting 2 (ATP2B2) were enhanced with age or after SM in the duodenum, the jejunum or all 3 segments. A total of 4 candidates of the paracellular pathway Claudin 2 (CLDN2) and tight junction proteins 1, 2, and 3 (TJP1, TJP2 and TJP3) increased in the small intestine after SM. Additionally, CALB1, ATP2B2, and CLDN2 were overexpressed in the duodenum or the jejunum or both segments after SM. The enhanced expression of candidate genes of the paracellular Ca pathway after SM, supports that the non-saturable transport could be a mechanism of great importance when high concentrations of soluble Ca are observed in the intestinal content during eggshell formation. Both pathways may work cooperatively in the duodenum and jejunum, the main sites of Ca absorption in laying hens.

The low-lying structures of the midshell νg9/2 Ni isotopes 72Ni and 74Ni have been investigated at the RIBF facility in RIKEN within the EURICA collaboration. Previously unobserved low-lying states ...were accessed for the first time following β decay of the mother nuclei 72Co and 74Co. As a result, we provide a complete picture in terms of the seniority scheme up to the first (8+) levels for both nuclei. The experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations in order to define to what extent the seniority quantum number is preserved in the first neutron g9/2 shell. We find that the disappearance of the seniority isomerism in the (81+) states can be explained by a lowering of the seniority-four (6+) levels as predicted years ago. For 74Ni, the internal de-excitation pattern of the newly observed (62+) state supports a restoration of the normal seniority ordering up to spin J=4. This property, unexplained by the shell-model calculations, is in agreement with a dominance of the single-particle spherical regime near 78Ni.

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This set-up exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron ...accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA 1π array are presented.

The structure of 74Se at low energy was investigated via spectroscopy of internal conversion electrons at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL). A set of internal K-conversion coefficients and ...monopole transition strengths was measured. A large ρ2(E0;22+→21+)⋅103=210(130) value was deduced. This result, in addition to a low upper limit for the 03+→02+ electron transition, casts in doubt a simple interpretation of the 74Se low-lying structure, in particular the recently proposed spherical, vibrational character. New microscopic beyond-mean-field calculations generally agree with the experimental results and are capable of producing a large ρ2(E0;22+→21+) value, even if still a factor ≈7 smaller than the experiment. Triaxiality and a complex shape-coexistence and mixing scenario seem responsible for this unexpected experimental result.

The γ decay of the elusive narrow, near-threshold proton resonance in 11B was investigated at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN) in a particle-γ coincidence experiment, using the 6Li(6Li,pγ) ...fusion-evaporation reaction and the GALILEO-GALTRACE setup. No clear signature was found for a possible E1 decay to the 1/21−, first-excited state of 11B, predicted by the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC) with a branching of 0.98−69+167×10−3 with respect to the dominant particle-decaying modes. The statistical analysis of the γ-ray spectrum provided an average upper limit of 2.37×10−3 for this γ-ray branching, with a global significance of 5σ. On the other hand, by imposing a global confidence level of 3σ, a significant excess of counts was observed for E=γ9300(20) keV, corresponding to a resonance energy of 11429(20) keV (namely 200(20) keV above the proton separation energy of 11B) and a γ-ray branching of 1.12(35)×10−3. This result is compatible with the SMEC calculations, potentially supporting the existence of a near-threshold proton resonance in 11B.
