Abstract
We present the Mid-infrared stellar Diameters and Fluxes compilation Catalogue (MDFC) dedicated to long-baseline interferometry at mid-infrared wavelengths (3–13 $\mu$m). It gathers data for ...half a million stars, i.e. nearly all the stars of the Hipparcos-Tycho catalogue whose spectral type is reported in the SIMBAD data base. We cross-match 26 data bases to provide basic information, binarity elements, angular diameter, magnitude and flux in the near and mid-infrared, as well as flags that allow us to identify the potential calibrators. The catalogue covers the entire sky with 465 857 stars, mainly dwarfs and giants from B to M spectral types closer than 18 kpc. The smallest reported values reach 0.16 $\mu$Jy in L and 0.1 $\mu$Jy in N for the flux, and 2 microarcsec for the angular diameter. We build four lists of calibrator candidates for the L and Nbands suitable with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) sub- and main arrays using the MATISSE instrument. We identify 1621 candidates for L and 44 candidates for N with the Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs), 375 candidates for both bands with the ATs, and 259 candidates for both bands with the Unit Telescopes (UTs). Predominantly cool giants, these sources are small and bright enough to belong to the primary lists of calibrator candidates. In the near future, we plan to measure their angular diameter with 1 per cent accuracy.
Context. The GRAVITY+ upgrade implies a complete renewal of its adaptive optics (AO) systems. Its complex design, featuring moving components between the deformable mirrors and the wavefront sensors, ...requires the monitoring and auto-calibrating of the lateral mis-registrations of the system while in operation. Aims. For preset and target acquisition, large lateral registration errors must be assessed in open loop to bring the system to a state where the AO loop closes. In closed loop, these errors must be monitored and corrected, without impacting the science. Methods. With respect to the first requirement, our method is perturbative, with two-dimensional modes intentionally applied to the system and correlated to a reference interaction matrix. For the second requirement, we applied a non-perturbative approach that searches for specific patterns in temporal correlations in the closed loop telemetry. This signal is produced by the noise propagation through the AO loop. Results. Our methods were validated through simulations and on the GRAVITY+ development bench. The first method robustly estimates the lateral mis-registrations, in a single fit and with a sub-subaperture resolution while in an open loop. The second method is not absolute, but it does successfully bring the system towards a negligible mis-registration error, with a limited turbulence bias. Both methods proved to robustly work on a system still under development and not fully characterised. Conclusions. Tested with Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors, the proposed methods are versatile and easily adaptable to other AO instruments, such as the pyramid, which stands as a baseline for all future AO systems. The non-perturbative method, not relying on an interaction matrix model and being sparse in the Fourier domain, is particularly suitable to the next generation of AO systems for extremely large telescopes that will present an unprecedented level of complexity and numbers of actuators.

Context. The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) has been providing breakthrough images of the dust in the central parsecs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), which is thought to be a key ...component of the AGN unification scheme and AGN host galaxy interaction. In single infrared bands, these images can enjoin multiple interpretations, some of which could challenge the unification scheme. This is the case for the archetypal type 2 AGN of NGC 1068, whereby the degeneracy is reduced by multi-band temperature maps that are hindered by an ambiguity in the alignment between different single-band images. Aims. We aim to solve this problem by creating a chromatic model capable of simultaneously explaining the VLTI GRAVITY+MATISSE 2 μm–13 μm observations of AGNs hosted by NGC 1068. Methods. We employed a simple disk and wind geometry populated by spherical black-body emitters and dust obscuration to create a versatile multi-wavelength modelling method for chromatic IR interferometric data of dusty objects. Results. This simple geometry is capable of reproducing the spectro-interferometric data of NGC 1068 from the K through N bands. It explains the complex single band images with obscuration and inclination effects, and it solves the alignment problem between bands. We find that the resulting model disk and wind geometry is consistent with previous studies of comparable and larger scales. For example, compared to molecular gas emission, our model wind position angle (PA) of 23 2 2° is close to the mas-scale outflowing CO(6–5) PA of ∼33° seen with ALMA. The equivalent 90° offset model disk PA is also consistent with the CO(6–5) disk axis of 112° as well as the mas-scale disk axis from CO(2–1), CO(3–2), and HCO + (4–3) of 115 ± 5°. Furthermore, the resulting model images visually resemble the multiple achromatic image reconstructions of the same data when evaluated at the same wavelengths. We conclude that the IR emitting structure surrounding the AGN within NGC 1068 can indeed be explained by the clumpy disk+wind iteration of the AGN unification scheme. Within the scheme, we find that it is best explained as a type 2 AGN and the obscuring dust chemistry can be explained by a mix of olivine silicates and 16 ± 1% amorphous carbon.

Context.
The ‘Great Dimming’ of the prototypical red supergiant Betelgeuse, which occurred between December 2019 and April 2020, gives us unprecedented insight into the processes occurring on the ...stellar surface and in the inner wind of this type of star. In particular it may bring further understanding of their dust nucleation and mass-loss processes.
Aims.
Here, we present and analyse VLTI/MATISSE observations in the N band (8–13 µm) taken near the brightness minimum in order to assess the status of the dusty circumstellar environment.
Methods.
We explored the compatibility of a dust clump obscuring the star with our mid-infrared interferometric observations using continuum 3D radiative transfer modelling, and probed the effect of adding multiple clumps close to the star on the observables. We also tested the viability of a large cool spot on the stellar surface without dust present in the ambient medium.
Results.
Using the visibility data, we derived a uniform disk diameter of 59.02 ± 0.64 mas in the spectral range 8–8.75 µm. We find that both the dust clump and the cool spot models are compatible with the data. Further to this, we note that the extinction and emission of our localised dust clump in the line of sight of the star directly compensate for each other, making the clump undetectable in the spectral energy distribution and visibilities. The lack of infrared brightening during the Great Dimming therefore does not exclude extinction due to a dust clump as one of the possible mechanisms. The visibilities can be reproduced by a spherical wind with dust condensing at 13 stellar radii and a dust mass-loss rate of (2.1–4.9) × 10

Metal-poor halo stars are important astrophysical laboratories that allow us to unravel details about many aspects of astrophysics, including the chemical conditions at the formation of our Galaxy, ...understanding the processes of diffusion in stellar interiors, and determining precise effective temperatures and calibration of colour-effective temperature relations. To address any of these issues the fundamental properties of the stars must first be determined. HD 140283 is the closest and brightest metal-poor Population II halo star (distance = 58 pc and V = 7.21), an ideal target that allows us to approach these questions, and one of a list of 34 benchmark stars defined for Gaia astrophysical parameter calibration. In the framework of characterizing these benchmark stars, we determined the fundamental properties of HD 140283 (radius, mass, age, and effective temperature) by obtaining new interferometric and spectroscopic measurements and combining them with photometry from the literature. The interferometric measurements were obtained using the visible interferometer VEGA on the CHARA array and we determined a 1D limb-darkened angular diameter of θ1D = 0.353 ± 0.013 milliarcsec. Using photometry from the literature we derived the bolometric flux in two ways: a zero reddening solution (AV = 0.0 mag) of Fbol of 3.890 ± 0.066 × 10-8 erg s-1 cm-2, and a maximum of AV = 0.1 mag solution of 4.220 ± 0.067 × 10-8 erg s-1 cm-2. The interferometric Teff is thus between 5534 ± 103 K and 5647 ± 105 K and its radius is R = 2.21 ± 0.08R⊙. Spectroscopic measurements of HD 140283 were obtained using HARPS, NARVAL, and UVES and a 1D LTE analysis of Hα line wings yielded Teffspec = 5626 ± 75 K. Using fine-tuned stellar models including diffusion of elements we then determined the mass M and age t of HD 140283. Once the metallicity has been fixed, the age of the star depends on M, initial helium abundance Yi, andmixing-length parameter α, only two of which are independent. We derive simple equations to estimate one from the other two. We need to adjust α to much lower values than the solar one (~2) in order to fit the observations, and if AV = 0.0 mag then 0.5 ≤ α ≤ 1. We give an equation to estimate t from M, Yi (α), and AV. Establishing a reference α = 1.00 and adopting Yi = 0.245 we derive a mass and age of HD 140283: M = 0.780 ± 0.010M⊙ and t = 13.7 ± 0.7 Gyr (AV = 0.0 mag), or M = 0.805 ± 0.010M⊙ and t = 12.2 ± 0.6 Gyr (AV = 0.1 mag). Our stellar models yield an initial (interior) metal-hydrogen mass fraction of Z/X i = −1.70 and log g = 3.65 ± 0.03. Theoretical advances allowing us to impose the mixing-length parameter would greatly improve the redundancy between M,Yi, and age, while from an observational point of view, accurate determinations of extinction along with asteroseismic observations would provide critical information allowing us to overcome the current limitations in our results.

Aims. In the context of the future developments of long baseline interferometry at visible wavelengths, we have built a prototype instrument called Fibered spectrally Resolved Interferometer – New ...Design (FRIEND) based on single mode fibers and a new generation detector called Electron Multiplying Charge-Coupled Device (EMCCD). Installed on the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) array, it aims to estimate the performance of a fibered instrument in the visible when coupled with telescopes equipped with adaptive optics (AO) in partial correction. Methods. We observed different sequences of targets and reference stars to study the compensation of the birefringence of the fibers, the coupling efficiency in various conditions of correction, and to calibrate our numerical model of signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). We also used a known binary star to demonstrate the reliability and the precision of our squared visibility and closure phase measurements. Results. We firstly present a reliable and stable solution for compensating the birefringence of the fibers with an improvement of a factor of 1.5 of the instrumental visibility. We then demonstrate an improvement by a factor of between 2.5 and 3 of the coupling efficiency when using the LABAO systems in closed loop. The third results of our paper is the demonstration of the correct calibration of the parameters of our S/N estimator provided the correct excess noise factor of EMCCD is correctly taken into account. Finally with the measurements of the angular separation, difference of magnitude and individual diameters of the two components of ζ Ori A, we demonstrate the reliability and precision of our interferometric estimators, and in particular a median residual on the closure phase of 1.2°.

Context. Stellar rotation is a key in our understanding of both mass-loss and evolution of intermediate and massive stars. It can lead to anisotropic mass-loss in the form of radiative wind or an ...excretion disk. Aims. We wished to spatially resolve the photosphere and gaseous environment of 51 Oph, a peculiar star with a very high vsini of 267 km s-1 and an evolutionary status that remains unsettled. It has been classified by different authors as a Herbig, a β Pic, or a classical Be star. Methods. We used the VEGA visible beam combiner installed on the CHARA array that reaches a submilliarcsecond resolution. Observation were centered on the Hα emission line. Results. We derived, for the first time, the extension and flattening of 51 Oph photosphere. We found a major axis of θeq = 8.08 ± 0.70 R⊙ and a minor axis of θpol = 5.66 ± 0.23 R⊙. This high photosphere distortion shows that the star is rotating close to its critical velocity. Finally, using spectro-interferometric measurements in the Hα line, we constrained the circumstellar environment geometry and kinematics and showed that the emission is produced in a 5.2 ± 2 R⋆ disk in Keplerian rotation. Conclusions. From the visible point of view, 51 Oph presents all the features of a classical Be star: near critical-rotation and double-peaked Hα line in emission produced in a gaseous disk in Keplerian rotation. However, this does not explain the presence of dust as seen in the mid-infrared and millimeter spectra, and the evolutionary status of 51 Oph remains unsettled.

The performance of interferometers has been much increased over the past ten years. Studies have been conducted with the aim to propose a new generation of interferometers. The Carlina concept ...studied at the Haute-Provence Observatory consists of an optical interferometer configured as a diluted version of the Arecibo radio telescope. Since 2003, we have been building a technical demonstrator of this diluted telescope. The main goals of this project were to find opto-mechanical solutions to stabilize the optics attached to cables at several tens of meters above the ground, and to characterize this diluted telescope under real conditions. By detecting fringes on Deneb, we confirm that the entire system conceptually has worked correctly. It also proves that when the primary mirrors are aligned using the metrology system, we can directly record fringes in the focal gondola, even in blind operation. Its optical architecture has many advantages for future projects: Planet Formation Imager (PFI), post-ELTs, interferometer in space.

The inner structure and properties (temperature, mass) of the circumstellar disk of Herbig star MWC480 are studied by stellar interferometry method used in the infrared and are interpreted using ...semi-analytical models. From these models, the SED (Spectral Energy Distribution) was fitted and multi-wavelength intensity map of the source were calculated. The intensity map provides the input for modeling the Keck Interferometer (KI) data in the near-infrared (near-IR) and the data of Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) with the mid-infrared instrument MIDI. We conclude that with our limited set of data, we can fit the SED, the Keck visibilities and the MIDI visibilities using a two-components disk model. Furthermore, we suspect that MWC480 has a transitional dusty disk. However, we need more MIDI observations with different baseline orientations to confirm our modeling.
