A muon collider represents the ideal machine to reach very high center-of-mass energies and luminosities by colliding elementary particles. This is the result of the low level of beamstrahlung and ...synchrotron radiation compared to linear or circular electron-positron colliders. In contrast with other lepton machines, the design of a detector for a multi-TeV muon collider requires detailed knowledge of the interaction region due to the significant backgrounds created by muon beam decays in the collider ring. The physics reach can be properly evaluated only when the detector performance in such an environment is determined. In this work, the backgrounds generated by muon beams of 750 GeV are characterized and the performance of the tracking system and the calorimeter detector is illustrated. Solutions to minimize the effect of the beam-induced backgrounds are discussed and applied to obtain track and jet reconstruction performance. The μ+μ−→Hν →b ν process is fully simulated and reconstructed to demonstrate that physics measurements are possible in this harsh environment. The measurement precision for the Higgs boson coupling to b is evaluated for s=1.5, 3, and 10 TeV and compared to other proposed machines.
Among the post-LHC generation of particle accelerators, the muon collider represents a unique machine with capability to provide very high energy leptonic collisions and to open the path to a vast ...and mostly unexplored physics programme. However, on the experimental side, such great physics potential is accompanied by unprecedented technological challenges, due to the fact that muons are unstable particles. Their decay products interact with the machine elements and produce an intense flux of background particles that eventually reach the detector and may degrade its performance. In this paper, we present technologies that have a potential to match the challenging specifications of a muon collider detector and outline a path forward for the future R&D efforts.
Physics at a multi-TeV muon collider needs a change of perspective for the detector design due to the large amount of background induced by muon beam decays. Preliminary studies, based on simulated ...data, on the composition and the characteristics of the particles originated from the muon decays and reaching the detectors are presented here. The reconstruction performance of the physics processes \(H\to b\bar b\) and \(Z\to b\bar b\) has been investigated for the time being without the effect of the machine induced background. A preliminary study of the environment hazard due to the radiation induced by neutrino interactions with the matter is presented using the FLUKA simulation program.

Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long standing problem of new Physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurements of ...the third mixing angle \(\theta_{13}\) in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourage to pursue the still missing results on the leptonic CP violation and the absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling and incomplete measurements are in place which deserve an exhaustive evaluation and study. We will report about the present situation of the muon disappearance measurements at small \(L/E\) in the context of the current CERN project to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe and the search for sterile neutrinos. We will then illustrate the achievements that a double muon spectrometer can attain in terms of discovery of new neutrino states, performing a newly developed analysis.
Despite their increasing use, camera traps as a monitoring tool for arboreal small mammals leave room for further improvements to increase their effectiveness. In the summer of 2023, we conducted a ...small mammal survey in a wooded area of a lowland agroecosystem in the Veneto region, using standard camera traps equipped with macro lenses for close-up shooting. This camera trap technique made it possible to contact three species of small mammals in the tree-shrub layer: Eurasian red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris, wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus, and black rat Rattus rattus. The use of macro lenses combined with the standard camera trapping technique made it possible to obtain better quality images and more information even on smaller species compared to more traditional camera traps.
Telemonitoring trials for early detection of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) have provided mixed results. Day-to-day variations in lung function measured by the ...forced oscillation technique (FOT) may yield greater insight. We evaluated the clinical utility of home telemonitoring of variability in FOT measures in terms of 1) the relationship with symptoms and quality of life (QoL); and 2) the timing of variability of FOT measures and symptom changes prior to AECOPD.
Daily FOT parameters at 5 Hz (resistance (R) and reactance (X); Resmon Pro Diary, Restech Srl, Milan, Italy), daily symptoms (COPD Assessment Test (CAT)) and 4-weekly QoL data (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ)) were recorded over 8-9 months from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Variability of R and X was calculated as the standard deviation (sd) over 7-day running windows and we also examined the effect of varying window size. The relationship of FOT
CAT and SGRQ was assessed using linear mixed modelling, daily changes in FOT variability and CAT prior to AECOPD using one-way repeated measures ANOVA.
Fifteen participants with a mean±sd age of 69±10 years and a % predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV
) of 39±10% had a median (interquartile range (IQR)) adherence of 95.4% (79.0-98.8%). Variability of the inspiratory component of X (indicated by the standard deviation of inspiratory reactance (SDX
)) related to CAT and weakly to SGRQ (fixed effect estimates 1.57, 95% CI 0.65-2.49 (p=0.001) and 4.41, 95% CI -0.06 to 8.89 (p=0.05), respectively). SDX
changed significantly on the same day as CAT (1 day before AECOPD, both p=0.02) and earlier when using shorter running windows (3 days before AECOPD, p=0.01; accuracy=0.72 for 5-day windows).

from FOT telemonitoring reflects COPD symptoms and may be a sensitive biomarker for early detection of AECOPD.
