Throughout the world, the use of industrial polymers derived from fossil fuels is practically inevitable because they have such a wide range of applications; however, the environmental problems ...arising from this practice have led to a search for alternatives which will allow their use to be reduced, as well as strategies for their control by degradation using biorganic active agents. Insects have been a focus of special interest, as some species consume plastics and may serve to biodegrade them through the action of bacteria in their digestive tracts. In this context, the object of the present study was to characterise bacteria present in the intestine of wax moth larvae (Galleria mellonella). Thirty larvae were subjected to a diet based on polystyrene foam and thirty larvae in natural diet for 7 days. Gastrointestinal tracts were extracted and PCR was run. The results showed the presence of bacterial cells of Carnobacterium maltaromaticum, Brevibacterium sandarakinum, Pseudomonas psychrophila, Pseudomonas sp., Providence sp., Corynebacterium sp. However, the real action of these groups of bacteria in the effective degradation of polymers must be verified.
La microbiota fúngica que perros y gatos portan en su pelaje es adquirida principalmente del ambiente y está compuesta por diversos hongos queratinofílicos, patógenos u oportunistas, por lo que su ...presencia representa un riesgo de infección para las personas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue contribuir al conocimiento del rol de los gatos sanos como posibles diseminadores de hongos filamentosos patógenos y oportunistas a las personas. Se colectaron 50 muestras de pelo y piel de gatos dermatológicamente sanos, mediante la técnica de Mariat y Tapia. Las muestras se sembraron en agar Sabouraud suplementado con glucosa y cloranfenicol-gentamicina (ASG), agar Selectivo identificatorio de dermatofitos (DTM) y Dermatophyte Identification Medium (DIM), e incubadas a 28gradosC por 21 días. En el 100% de las muestras se obtuvo desarrollo de hongos. Se identificó hongos de los géneros Acremonium, Alternaría, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Chaetomium, Chrysosporium, Fusarium, Geotríchum, Humicola, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Scopularíopsis, Tríchoderma y Sporothrix, algunos de los cuales son señalados en la literatura como hongos queratinofílicos y oportunistas. Los dermatofitos fueron los más abundantes (80%) representados por Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes y Epidermophyton floccosum. Los resultados de este trabajo demuestran que el pelaje de gatos dermatológicamente sanos, porta una variada flora fúngica del tipo filamentoso queratinofílica y queratinolítica, lo que confirma el rol ecológico de estos animales como reservorio y fuente de infecciones oportunistas. The fungal microbiota that dogs and cats carry in their haircoat is principally acquired from the environment and is composed of diverse queratinophilic fungi, pathogens and opportunistic therefore their presence represent an infection risk for the human population. The aims of this research was to contribute to the knowledge of the role of healthy cats as potential disseminators of pathogens and opportunistic filamentous fungi to humans. Fifty tissue and hair samples of dermatological healthy cats were collected, using the Mariat y Tapia sampling technique. The samples was cultured on Sabouraud agar supplemented with glucose and chloramphenicol gentamicin (ASG), Dermatophytes Test Medium agar (DTM) and Dermatophyte Identification Medium (DIM) and incubated at 28degreesC for 21 days. Its were obtained 100% positive samples to the fungal culture, and were identified Acremonium, Alternaría, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Chaetomium, Chrysosporium, Fusarium, Geotríchum, Humicola, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Scopularíopsis, Trichoderma and Sporothrix, some of them are reported as potential keratinophylics and opportunistic patogens. Dermatophytes were mostly isolated from cats (80%), represented by Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum. The occurrence of several filamentous keratinophylic and keratinolitic fungi in the haircoat of dermatological healthy cats confirms their status as reservoirs and as sources of opportunistic infection. Introdução: A psoríase é uma doença inflamatória crónica não contagiosa, que afeta o tecido cutâneo, sendo caracterizada pela formação de placas avermelhadas, endurecidas e com tendência a escamação ...na pele que pode também afetar unhas e articulações. A etiologia da psoríase ainda não é bem conhecida, mas, atualmente, está relacionada às seguintes causas: predisposição genética, agentes extrínsecos como queimaduras solares, infeções, fármacos sistémicos e stress e, ainda, o sistema imunitário. O tratamento é uma conjugação de medidas farmacológicas e não farmacológicas. A psoríase é associada a várias comorbilidades do foro cardiovascular, metabólico, cerebrovascular, psicológico e entre outros. Objetivos: O objetivo deste artigo é verificar o conhecimento das causas da psoríase, e a terapêutica associada, realçando a sua eficácia e segurança e, ainda, as suas comorbilidades. Material e Métodos: A pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada em bases de dados como PubMed, Google Scholar e Medline Plus, usando as palavras-chave “Psoriasis”; “Comorbidity”; “Skin Structure”; “Treatment”; “Unconventional Treatment”; “Pathogenesis”: “Ichthyotherapy”. Resultados: O tratamento adequado da psoríase é crucial para melhorar o quadro clínico, podendo ser realizado a partir de várias alternativas. É muito usual o uso de terapêutica tópica a partir de corticoides, análogos da vitamina D, tazaroteno e inibidores da calcineurina, na doença leve e moderada. Quando a psoríase é severa é tratada com terapia sistémica (metotrexato, ciclosporina, acitretina e terapia biológica) associada a fototerapia. As comorbilidades mais comuns da psoríase são doenças cardiovasculares como hipertensão e doença arterial coronária, doenças metabólicas como diabetes, obesidade e comprometimento articular como é o caso da arterite psoriática. Conclusão: É de grande importância o estudo da relação entre o binómio psoríase-comorbilidades. Os estudos até agora efetuados, apresentam perspetivas promissoras para melhorar o tratamento, diagnosticar e tratar as comorbilidades.

The etiology of psoriasis is still not well known but is currently related to the following causes: genetic predisposition, extrinsic agents such as sunburn, infections, systemic drugs, and stress, and the immune system. Treatment is a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures. Psoriasis is associated with several cardiovascular, metabolic, cerebrovascular, psychological, and other comorbidities. Objective: The purpose of this article is to verify the knowledge of the causes of psoriasis, and the associated therapy, highlighting its efficacy and safety, and its associated comorbidities. Methodology: The bibliographical research was carried out in databases such as como PubMed, Google Scholar and Medline Plus using the keywords "Psoriasis"; "Comorbidity"; "Skin Structure"; "Treatment"; "Unconventional Treatment"; "Pathogenesis": "Ichthyotherapy". Results: Appropriate treatment of psoriasis is crucial to improve the clinical picture and can be performed using several alternatives. The use of topical therapy based on corticoids, vitamin D analogues, tazarotene and calcineurin inhibitors is very common in mild and moderate disease. When psoriasis is severe, it is treated with systemic therapy (methotrexate, cyclosporine, acitretin and biological therapy) associated with phototherapy. The most common comorbidities of psoriasis are cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and coronary artery disease, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and joint impairment such as psoriatic arteritis. Conclusion: It is of great importance to study the relationship between the binomial psoriasis-comorbidities. The studies carried out so far show promising prospects for improving treatment, diagnosing, and treating comorbidities. Keywords: Psoriasis; comorbidity; treatment. Las complicaciones más frecuentes de la psoriasis son las enfermedades cardiovasculares como la hipertensión y la enfermedad arterial coronaria, las enfermedades metabólicas como la diabetes, la obesidad y el compromiso conjunto como la arteritis psoriásica. Conclusión: El estudio de la relación entre la psoriasis-comorbilidades binomiales es de gran importancia. Los estudios realizados hasta la fecha han mostrado perspectivas prometedoras para mejorar el tratamiento, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de los trastornos. En Chile se ha aislado Listeria monocytogenes en diversos alimentos. El objetivo de este estudio fue aportar información sobre la presencia de la bacteria en longanizas artesanales (embutidos ...madurados), leche cruda y hortalizas producidos en la Provincia de Cautín y determinar los serotipos. Las muestras correspondieron a longaniza común artesanal, leche cruda y hortalizas, colectadas durante 2003. Para el aislamiento e identificación de L. monocytogenes se usó la metodología aprobada por el Food and Drug Administration (FDA) con incubación en caldo selectivo preenrriquecimiento para Listeria (35gradosC), y posterior siembra en medios selectivos Oxford y Palcam (35-37gradosC). Las colonias típicas fueron replicadas en caldo tripticasa de soya (TSB) y sometidas a pruebas bioquímicas de identificación. La serotipificación se realizó sobre 53 cepas, utilizando un set de antisuero comercial. L. monocytogenes se presentó en el 61,1% de las longanizas, en el 0,0% de las muestras de leche cruda y en el 16,6% de las de hortalizas. Estos resultados podrían indicar fallas en la higiene de la manipulación, en el lavado y sanitización de superficies de contacto con los alimentos. Se determinó la presencia del serotipo 4e en 3 cepas provenientes de longanizas fabricadas en la ciudad de Temuco, y 1 cepa de cada uno de los serotipos virulentos 1/2a, 1/2b y 4b, los dos primeros provenientes de longanizas y el último desde hortalizas. La presencia de estos serotipos 1/2a, 1/2b y 4b, plantean una clara amenaza de un eventual brote, particularmente en consumidores susceptibles. Estos resultados representan un importante desafío de prevención y control para las autoridades sanitarias chilenas. Palabras clave: L. monocytogenes, longanizas, leche cruda, hortalizas. It has been reported in Chile that L. monocytogenes is present in differents kind of foods. The aim of this study was to obtain information of the occurrence of the bacteria in sausages, raw milk and vegetables produced in Cautín Province, and to know the L. monocytogenes serotypes involved. For this purpose sausages, raw milk and several vegetables samples, were collected on 2003. For the isolation and identification of L. monocytogenes, the samples were grown in tripticase soy broth (TSB) inoculated into a preenrichment broth for Listeria (35degreesC followed by an inoculation on selectives medias Oxford and Palcam (35-37degreesC). Biochemical test were performed to all the typical Listeria colonies according to the methodology recommended by Bacteriological Analytical Manual (FDA). Serotyping was carried out using commercial specific antisera on 53 bacterial strains. Results of the analysis indicated the presence of L. monocytogenes in 61.1% of sausages samples, 0.0% in raw milk samples and in 16.6% of vegetables samples. These results could indicate failure in the hygiene practices, like cleaning and sanitizing the surface in contact with the food. The presence of serotipe 4e in 3 strains were found in some sausages. There was a strain of virulent serotype 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b, the first and second resulted isolated from sausages and the third one resulted from vegetables. The presence of serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b, is a threat of an eventual out-break, especially in persons quite susceptive, that is why, there is a huge risk for pubic health in customers from this region. These results represent for chilean public's health authorities an enormous challenge for controlling and prevention procedures. Key words: L. monocytogenes, sausages, raw milk, vegetables.
Twenty-one vicuñas (Vicugna, vicugna) from a Chilean breeding unit were tested to serovars Pomona, Canicola, Copenhageni, Ballum and Grippotyphosa of Leptospira interrogans using the microscopic ...microagglutination technique. Microsporum canis is the most common cause of feline dermatophytosis and the most pathogenic fungus isolated from the skin and hair of healthy cats. Cats are considered to be the natural reservoir ...and infection sourse of this disease in human and domestic animals.
Knowing the M. canis frequency in the dermatological healthy cat population of Temuco city, Chile.
Fifty cat samples were collected irrespective sex or race. Cats' ages were between 2 months and 12 years old, and the animals were treated at the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of the Universidad Católica de Temuco, or in three private clinics from this city. Tissue and hair samples were collected using two sampling techniques: hair extracting tweezers and the Mariat & Tapia method. For the clinical diagnosis, the Wood's lamp was used. Hairs were microscopically observed followed by a culture using Sabouraud agar and Lactrimel agar. M.canis was isolated in 30 cats (60%).
There were no statistically significative differences when parameters such as age, sex and race were taking into account. Differences between the use of Sabouraud agar and Lactrimel agar were not registered. It was determined that the Mariat & Tapia method was able to detect more dermatophytes than the collecting tweezers method. These differences were statistically significative.
The percentage of M. canis isolation obtained in this work remarks the role of healthy cats in the transmission of these dermatophytes to humans and other animals.
