The Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) on Opportunity investigated the mineral abundances and compositions of outcrops, rocks, and soils at Meridiani Planum. Coarse crystalline ...hematite and olivine-rich basaltic sands were observed as predicted from orbital TES spectroscopy. Outcrops of aqueous origin are composed of 15 to 35% by volume magnesium and calcium sulfates a high-silica component modeled as a combination of glass, feldspar, and sheet silicates (~20 to 30%), and hematite; only minor jarosite is identified in Mini-TES spectra. Mini-TES spectra show only a hematite signature in the millimeter-sized spherules. Basaltic materials have more plagioclase than pyroxene, contain olivine, and are similar in inferred mineral composition to basalt mapped from orbit. Bounce rock is dominated by clinopyroxene and is close in inferred mineral composition to the basaltic martian meteorites. Bright wind streak material matches global dust. Waterlain rocks covered by unaltered basaltic sands suggest a change from an aqueous environment to one dominated by physical weathering.

The Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) on Spirit has studied the mineralogy and thermophysical properties at Gusev crater. Undisturbed soil spectra show evidence for minor carbonates ...and bound water. Rocks are olivinerich basalts with varying degrees of dust and other coatings. Dark-toned soils observed on disturbed surfaces may be derived from rocks and have derived mineralogy (±5 to 10%) of 45% pyroxene (20% Ca-rich pyroxene and 25% pigeonite), 40% sodic to intermediate plagioclase, and 15% olivine (forsterite 45% ±5 to 10). Two spectrally distinct coatings are observed on rocks, a possible indicator of the interaction of water, rock, and airfall dust. Diurnal temperature data indicate particle sizes from 40 to 80 µm in hollows to ~0.5 to 3 mm in soils.

Spirit landed on the floor of Gusev Crater and conducted initial operations on soil‐covered, rock‐strewn cratered plains underlain by olivine‐bearing basalts. Plains surface rocks are covered by ...wind‐blown dust and show evidence for surface enrichment of soluble species as vein and void‐filling materials and coatings. The surface enrichment is the result of a minor amount of transport and deposition by aqueous processes. Layered granular deposits were discovered in the Columbia Hills, with outcrops that tend to dip conformably with the topography. The granular rocks are interpreted to be volcanic ash and/or impact ejecta deposits that have been modified by aqueous fluids during and/or after emplacement. Soils consist of basaltic deposits that are weakly cohesive, relatively poorly sorted, and covered by a veneer of wind‐blown dust. The soils have been homogenized by wind transport over at least the several kilometer length scale traversed by the rover. Mobilization of soluble species has occurred within at least two soil deposits examined. The presence of monolayers of coarse sand on wind‐blown bedforms, together with even spacing of granule‐sized surface clasts, suggests that some of the soil surfaces encountered by Spirit have not been modified by wind for some time. On the other hand, dust deposits on the surface and rover deck have changed during the course of the mission. Detection of dust devils, monitoring of the dust opacity and lower boundary layer, and coordinated experiments with orbiters provided new insights into atmosphere‐surface dynamics.
Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the association between concussion profiles within individual patients across repeat concussions. Methods: Retrospective chart review of 100 adolescents (57.3% male) ...aged 10–21 years presenting to a concussion clinic within 30 days of injury for two separate injuries between 2011 and 2021. Clinicians conducted multidomain assessments including vestibular/ocular motor screening, neurocognitive testing, symptoms and medical/injury history to adjudicate the following concussion clinical profiles: vestibular, ocular, post-traumatic migraine, cognitive fatigue, and anxiety/mood. Chi-square tests with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were conducted to examine the association of each profile from the first to the second concussion. Results: Chi-square analyses supported associations between the first and second concussions (time between injuries = 667.1 ± 529.2 days) for the vestibular (χ2 = 10.08, p < 0.01, OR = 3.75, 95% CI = 1.63–8.62), ocular (χ2 = 6.51, p < 0.05, OR = 3.51, 95% CI = 1.30–9.46), and migraine (χ2 = 11.056, p < 0.001, OR = 4.01, 95% CI = 1.73–9.29) profiles, such that having that profile at first concussion was associated with increased likelihood of having the same profile at second concussion. Chi-square analyses for cognitive fatigue and anxiety/mood were not significant. Conclusions: Vestibular, ocular, and migraine profiles at first injury predicted their presence at second injury, which may reflect consistent underlying risk factors (e.g., sex migraine history) for these profiles. Conversely, no association was supported for anxiety/mood and cognitive fatigue profiles across injuries. The present findings are the first to demonstrate that certain profiles are likely to recur after repeat concussion. This information can be used by clinicians to inform earlier, targeted treatment recommendations for associated profiles.
Abstract
Purpose
To identify predictors of sleep quality following concussion in adolescents.
Methods
Ninety-four (47%-F) participants aged 11-17 (14.31±2.8) years within 7 days of injury were ...recruited from a specialty concussion clinic and emergency department. Participants completed demographics, mTBI and medical history, Adolescent Sleep-Wake Scale (ASWS), Concussion Clinical Profiles Screening (CP Screen), and Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS). Stepwise logistic regressions (LR) were used to identify predictors of ASWS scores. Results of the LR were used to create a probability test variable for receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses.
Results
Results of the LR for ASWS total sleep score were significant (p<.001) and accurately identified 83.1% of adolescents with sensitivity of 76.7% and specificity of 89.1%, with history of anxiety (Adj OR=9.52, 95%CI=1.71-52.63, p=.01) and CP Screen anxiety domain total score (Adj OR=1.92, 95% CI=1.41-2.61, p<.001) as significant predictors. ROC analysis of the combined probability test variable for total sleep score was significant with area under the curve (AUC)=.88 (95%CI=.80-.94, p<.001). Similar findings were supported for history of anxiety and CP Screen anxiety domain scores on individual sleep domain scores.
Conclusions
History of anxiety and higher CP Screen anxiety score were predictive of poor sleep among adolescents following concussion. Surprisingly, age, sex, mTBI and migraine history, as well as total higher symptoms burden were not associated with poor sleep following concussion. The findings suggest that clinicians should focus on interventions to reduce anxiety to enhance sleep among adolescents following concussion.
Background: Polypropylene mesh (PPM) is an effective material for the repair of abdominal wall defects, but has a tendency to induce dense adhesions when in contact with viscera. Seprafilm (Genzyme ...Corp, Cambridge, MA), a bioresorbable membrane, has been shown to reduce adhesion formation after midline closures in humans and to PPM in animals. Given the increased inflammatory response expected with surgical trauma, its efficacy under surgical conditions has been questioned.
Study Design: A prospective, randomized, blinded study was conducted using a rabbit model. Standardized abdominal wall defects were created in three groups of New Zealand white rabbits. The cecum was deserosalized to simulate the effects of trauma. The abdominal defect was then repaired with PPM. In the control group, no Seprafilm was used. In the first experimental group Seprafilm was placed between the mesh and the abdominal viscera. In the second experimental group Seprafilm was placed over the deserosalized area and between the mesh and abdominal viscera. Animals were sacrificed at 30 days and adhesions were categorized and quantified using digital image analysis of inked specimens. The strength of incorporation was also determined.
Results: The formation of adhesions between the viscera and mesh repair was dramatically reduced in both experimental groups compared with the control group. The incidence of visceral adhesions was reduced by 80% in the single film group (p = 0.0004) and 90% in the double film group (p = 0.00008). The reduction in surface area of adhesions was 96.4% in the single film group (p = 0.000019) and 99.4% in the double film group (p = 0.00002). Omental adhesions were reduced by 30% but this did not achieve statistical significance. Strength of incorporation was not adversely affected in either group.
Conclusions: Seprafilm is highly effective in preventing adhesions to PPM. This effect was not diminished by the presence of visceral trauma and its resultant inflammatory response. The use of Seprafilm does not adversely affect tissue incorporation. Clinical trials are warranted to determine if the protective effects of Seprafilm demonstrated in this study are applicable in the clinical setting.

59 athletes with SRC (51% male) aged 14.42, SD= 1.65 years from two ...concussion specialty clinics between May 2019 and January 2020. Patients completed the Behavioral Regulation Assessment for Concussion (BRAC) inventory measuring sleep, diet, hydration, physical activity and stress; on a 4-point Likert scale, ImPACT, and PCSS. Analyses included one-way ANOVAs with Tukey’s post-hoc test and chi-square analyses.
Results
Verbal memory scores were higher F(3,55)= 2.85, p<.05 in participants reporting 8-10hrs of sleep “most of the time” (M= 85.12, SD = 10.58) vs. “some of the time “ (M= 75.65, SD= 11.91). Verbal memory differed when engaged in stress regulation F(4,54)= 2.65, p<.05; “MOT” (M=81.38, SD= 10.95); “SOT” (M=82.33, SD= 12.64) and “never” (M= 84.05, SD= 13.07). PCSS sleep factor scores increased when individuals obtained 8-10hrs of sleep “MOT” (M=.30, SD=.423) “SOT” (M= 1.40, SD= 1.54) and “seldom/rarely” (M= 1.95, SD= 1.58). PCSS somatic scores were associated with decreased sleep X2(1, N=57) = 37.68; p= .001, and hydration X2(1, N=57) = 60.70 p< .001. Sleep and recovery time X2(1, N=55) = 120.82 p= .028.
Conclusions
Findings suggest that biopsychosocial factors including sleep, stress, and hydration are associated with symptoms, cognitive function, and recovery time following SRC and should be monitored by clinicians.

The landforms of northern Gale crater on Mars expose thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Based on images obtained by the Curiosity rover, we interpret these outcrops as evidence for past fluvial, ...deltaic, and lacustrine environments. Degradation of the crater wall and rim probably supplied these sediments, which advanced inward from the wall, infilling both the crater and an internal lake basin to a thickness of at least 75 meters. This intracrater lake system probably existed intermittently for thousands to millions of years, implying a relatively wet climate that supplied moisture to the crater rim and transported sediment via streams into the lake basin. The deposits in Gale crater were then exhumed, probably by wind-driven erosion, creating Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp).
