The objective of this work was to develop a new approach to assess the specificity and the efficiency of biodegradation of oxidized oligomers extracted from aged HDPE polyethylene films and to bring ...insight on the mechanisms occurring during biodegradation. 1H NMR spectroscopy and LC Orbitrap™ mass spectrometry were combined together with data processing using Kendrick mass defect calculation and Van Krevelen Diagram.
We showed that the molecular weight of extracted oligomers was lower than 850 Da with maximum chain length of 55 carbon atoms. The oligomers were divided into 11 classes of molecules with different oxidation state ranging from 0 to 10. All classes included series of chemically related compounds including up to 19 molecules.
95% of the soluble oligomers were assimilated by a strain of Rhodococcus rhodocchrous after 240 days of incubation. Large highly oxidized molecules completely disappeared while the other classes of molecules were still represented. Molecules containing 0–1 oxygen atom were less degraded. A strong shift to smaller molecules (<450 Da, 25 carbon atoms) was observed suggesting that longer molecules disappeared more rapidly than the smaller ones. It opens new perspectives on biodegradation processes as not only intracellular β-oxidation must be considered but also extracellular mechanisms leading to chain cleavages.

The fate of oxo-polymers in nature is strongly dependent on environmental conditions, mainly on the intensity and duration of sunshine, which vary with the season and the climate. In this work, we ...report the effect of different scenarii on the production and the molecular composition of oligomers released from oxo-biodegradable HDPE films. Under our experimental conditions, the duration of accelerated weathering corresponded to a period of 3 months to 3 years of exposure to outside conditions under temperate climate. In addition, the oligomers were extracted in three different solvents: i) water to mimics the natural environment; ii) acetone and chloroform to identify oligomers trapped in the polymer matrix. The combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy gives an extensive picture of the relative concentrations and the structural compositions of the extracted oligomers in the different tested conditions. In particular, the masses, the number of oxygen and carbon atoms could be determined for up to 2283 molecules. Globally the concentration and the size of oligomers increased with the duration of extraction, the level of aging of the polymer and the use of non-polar solvents. Surprisingly, the presence of highly oxidized molecules in acetone and chloroform extract, suggested an important swelling of HPDE films in these solvents and a better diffusion of these oligomers in the matrix. In nature, the biodegradability of oligomers could result from processes occurring both at the molecular (oxidation) and the macromolecular (diffusion and release) levels.

Aims. The Antarctica Search for Transiting ExoPlanets (ASTEP) program was originally aimed at probing the quality of the Dome C, Antarctica for the discovery and characterization of exoplanets by ...photometry. In the first year of operation of the 40 cm ASTEP 400 telescope (austral winter 2010), we targeted the known transiting planet WASP-19b in order to try to detect its secondary transits in the visible. This is made possible by the excellent sub-millimagnitude precision of the binned data. Methods. The WASP-19 system was observed during 24 nights in May 2010. Once brought back from Antarctica, the data were processed using various methods, and the best results were with an implementation of the optimal image subtraction (OIS) algorithm. Results. The photometric variability level due to starspots is about 1.8% (peak-to-peak), in line with the SuperWASP data from 2007 (1.4%) and higher than in 2008 (0.07%). We find a rotation period of WASP-19 of 10.7 ± 0.5 days, in agreement with the SuperWASP determination of 10.5 ± 0.2 days. Theoretical models show that this can only be explained if tidal dissipation in the star is weak, i.e. the tidal dissipation factor Q'★ > 3×107. Separately, we find evidence of a secondary eclipse of depth 390 ± 190 ppm with a 2.0σ significance, a phase that is consistent with a circular orbit and a 3% false positive probability. Given the wavelength range of the observations (420 to 950 nm), the secondary transit depth translates into a day-side brightness temperature of 2690-220+150 K, in line with measurements in the z′ and K bands. The day-side emission observed in the visible could be due either to thermal emission of an extremely hot day side with very little redistribution of heat to the night side or to direct reflection of stellar light with a maximum geometrical albedo Ag = 0.27 ± 0.13. We also report a low-frequency oscillation in phase at the planet orbital period, but with a lower limit amplitude that could not be attributed to the planet phase alone and that was possibly contaminated with residual lightcurve trends. Conclusions. This first evidence of a secondary eclipse in the visible from the ground demonstrates the high potential of Dome C, Antarctica, for continuous photometric observations of stars with exoplanets. These continuous observations are required to understand star-planet interactions and the dynamical properties of exoplanetary atmospheres.

Context. Dome C in Antarctica is a promising site for photometric observations thanks to the continuous night during the Antarctic winter and favorable weather conditions. Aims.We developed ...instruments to assess the quality of this site for photometry in the visible and to detect and characterize variable objects through the Antarctic Search for Transiting ExoPlanets (ASTEP) project. Methods. Here, we present the full analysis of four winters of data collected with ASTEP South, a 10 cm refractor pointing continuously toward the celestial south pole. We improved the instrument over the years and developed specific data reduction methods. Results. We achieved nearly continuous observations over the winters. We measure an average sky background of 20 mag arcsec−2 in the 579–642 nm bandpass. We built the lightcurves of 6000 stars and developed a model to infer the photometric quality of Dome C from the lightcurves themselves. The weather is photometric 67.1 ± 4.2% of the time and veiled 21.8 ± 2.0% of the time. The remaining time corresponds to poor quality data or winter storms. We analyzed the lightcurves of σ Oct and HD 184465 and find that the amplitude of their main frequency varies by a factor of 3.5 and 6.7 over the four years, respectively. We also identify 34 new variable stars and eight new eclipsing binaries with periods ranging from 0.17 to 81 days. Conclusion. The phase coverage that we achieved with ASTEP South is exceptional for a ground-based instrument and the data quality enables the detection and study of variable objects. These results demonstrate the high quality of Dome C for photometry in the visible and for time series observations in general.

The degradation of a commercial environmentally degradable polyethylene was investigated in two stages. Firstly by abiotic oxidation in an air oven to simulate the effect of the compost environment ...and secondly in the presence of selected microorganisms. Initial biofilm formation was followed by fluorescence microscopy and the subsequent growth of bacteria on the surface of the plastic was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that microbial growth occurred on the presence of PE samples that had been compression moulded to thick sections but had not been deliberately pre-oxidised. Molecular enlargement and broadening of molecular weight distribution occurred after preheating in air at 60 °C but not at ambient temperatures but colonisation of microorganisms occurred on all samples. Erosion of the film surface was observed in the vicinity of the microorganisms and the decay of oxidation products in the surface of the polymer film was measured by FTIR measurements and was found to be associated with the formation of protein and polysaccharides, attributable to the growth of the microorganisms.

Pelvic fractures are complex fractures associated with a high risk of venous thromboembolic complications (VTE) and up to a 10% risk of fatal pulmonary embolism. We aimed to reduce perioperative ...morbidity and mortality using a systematic screening protocol and secondly to evaluate this protocol and identify VTE risk factors.
This was a prospective monocentric study involving 100 consecutively enrolled patients. The protocol included a venous ultrasound examination of the inferior vena cava and lower limbs and abdominopelvic CT venography within 48 h prior to surgery. The evaluation criteria were the mortality and complication rates. Secondary endpoints were the rate of VTE events and the identification of risk factors.
One patient died on D1 postoperatively of a massive pulmonary embolism. Migration of a vena cava filter was reported for another. No thrombotic recurrence or hemorrhagic complications were reported. The rate of VTE events was 21%, of which 90% were pre-operative asymptomatic events. CT venography did not show superiority over ultrasound. Patients with greater fracture displacement, preoperative infection, higher platelet counts, or having had a preoperative transfusion were at a higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
The rate of asymptomatic VTE events in pelvic fractures is extremely high and leads to propose the following recommendations: (1) they should be preoperatively investigated by ultrasound and (2) a vena cava filter must be placed in cases of proximal DVT and the surgery postponed to allow anticoagulation treatment for at least 48 h, regardless of the type of thrombosis.

Context. The Concordia base in Dome C, Antarctica, is an extremely promising site for photometric astronomy due to the 3-month long night during the Antarctic winter, favorable weather conditions, ...and low scintillation. Aims. The ASTEP project (Antarctic Search for Transiting ExoPlanets) is a pilot project to discover transiting planets and understand the limits of visible photometry from the Concordia site. Methods. ASTEP South is the first phase of the ASTEP project. The instrument is a fixed 10 cm refractor with a 4k $\times$ 4k CCD camera in a thermalized box, pointing continuously a 3.88 $\times$ 3.88°2 field of view centered on the celestial south pole. We describe the project and report results of a preliminary data analysis. Results. ASTEP South became fully functional in June 2008 and obtained 1592 hours of data during the 2008 Antarctic winter. The data are of good quality but the analysis has to account for changes in the PSF (point spread function) due to rapid ground seeing variations and instrumental effects. The pointing direction is stable within 10 arcsec on a daily timescale and drifts by only 34 arcsec in 50 days. A truly continuous photometry of bright stars is possible in June (the noon sky background peaks at a magnitude R ≈ 15 arcsec-2 on June 22), but becomes challenging in July (the noon sky background magnitude is R ≈ 12.5 arcsec-2 on July 20). The weather conditions are estimated from the number of stars detected in the field. For the 2008 winter, the statistics are between 56.3% and 68.4% of excellent weather, 17.9% to 30% of veiled weather (when the probable presence of thin clouds implies a lower number of detected stars) and 13.7% of bad weather. Using these results in a probabilistic analysis of transit detection, we show that the detection efficiency of transiting exoplanets in one given field is improved at Dome C compared to a temperate site such as La Silla. For example we estimate that a year-long campaign of 10 cm refractor could reach an efficiency of 69% at Dome C versus 45% at La Silla for detecting 2-day period giant planets around target stars from magnitude 10 to 15. The detection efficiency decreases for planets with longer orbital periods, but in relative sense it is even more favorable to Dome C. Conclusions. This shows the high potential of Dome C for photometry and future planet discoveries.

The organization and dynamics of the plant endomembrane system require both universal and plant-specific molecules and compartments. The latter, despite the growing wealth of information, remains ...poorly understood. From the study of an Arabidopsis thaliana male gametophytic mutant, it was possible to isolate a gene named POKY POLLEN TUBE (POK) essential for pollen tube tip growth. The similarity between the predicted POK protein sequence and yeast Vps52p, a subunit from the GARP/VFT complex which is involved in the docking of vesicles from the prevacuolar compartment to the Golgi apparatus, suggested that the POK protein plays a role in plant membrane trafficking. Genetic analysis of Arabidopsis mutants affecting AtVPS53 or AtVPS54 genes which encode putative POK partners shows a transmission defect through the male gametophyte for all lines, which is similar to the pok mutant. Using a combination of biochemical approaches and specific antiserum it has been demonstrated that the POK protein is present in phylogenetically divergent plant species, associated with membranes and belongs to a high molecular weight complex. Combination of immunolocalization studies and pharmacological approaches in different plant cells revealed that the POK protein associates with Golgi and post-Golgi compartments. The role of POK in post-Golgi endomembrane trafficking and as a member of a putative plant GARP/VFT complex is discussed.

Summary
In higher plants, pollen tubes and root hairs share an ancient growth process named tip growth. We have isolated three allelic Arabidopsis mutant lines showing kinky‐shaped pollen tubes and, ...when homozygous, showing shorter and thicker root hairs. The ultrastructure of pollen tubes in these kinky pollen (kip) mutants is similar to that of the wild type; however, time‐lapse studies suggest that aberrant pollen tube shape is caused by periodic growth arrests alternated with phases of tube axis reorientation. The KIP gene encodes a protein of 2587 amino acids that is predicted to be targeted to the secretory pathway. KIP mRNA was detected in all organs investigated but was most abundant in pollen and roots. KIP has putative homologues in many eukaryotes, including mammals and yeast, and is similar to the Arabidopsis SABRE gene, whose mutation causes a dwarf phenotype. The phenotype of the kip/sab double mutant suggests related functions for both genes, however, the KIP protein is mostly required for tip‐growth.

We study the relation between individual preferences for job amenities (e.g., type of work, job security) and compensating wage differentials in cross-section. To this end, we estimate a partial ...equilibrium job search model on panel data from eight European countries. There are five non-wage job characteristics and two sources of job-to-job mobility: on-the-job search and reallocation shocks. We also allow for two types of unobserved heterogeneity. We find strong preferences for amenities, especially job security, yet, these preferences do not translate into significant wage differentials in cross-section. Counterfactual experiments show that one would need extremely low levels of search frictions for compensating differentials to arise. Lastly, a similar exercise on the distribution of job change outcomes reveals the role of constrained job-to-job mobility in the absence of compensating wage differentials.
