A set of effective chemical potentials (ECPs) are derived that connect energies of (Co, Fe, Ni, Zn)Fe2O4 spinels and oxides calculated at 0 K from density functional theory (DFT) to free energies in ...high temperature and pressure water. The ECPs are derived and validated by solving a system of linear equations that combine DFT and experimental free energies for NiO, ZnO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeO(OH), CoFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, NiFe2O4 and H2O. To connect to solution phase chemistry, a set of ECPs are also derived for solvated Ni2+, Zn2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions using an analogous set of linear equations and the solid ECPs. The ECPs are used to calculate free energies of low index stoichiometric surfaces of nickel oxide (NiO) and nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) in water as a function of temperature from 300 to 600 K at a pressure of 155 bar. Surface denuding at high temperatures is predicted, the implications of which for the formation of oxide corrosion products on heat transfer surfaces in light-water nuclear reactors are discussed.
The change in optical properties of GafChromic films depends not only on the absorbed dose, but also on the linear energy transfer (LET) of the ionizing radiation. The influence of LET on the film ...dose-response relationship is especially important when films are applied for dosimetry of energetic charged particles. In the present study, we examined the response of the unlaminated EBT3 and MD-V3 films to proton, deuterium and helium beams with energies in the range of several megaelectronvolts (MeV). Films were exposed to doses up to 200 Gy and a model based on the bimolecular chemical reaction was chosen to fit the measured film signals. The LET in the active layers of the films and the dose correction factors were computed with Monte Carlo software TRIM. Signal quenching, observed for all ion beams in comparison to x-rays, was investigated as a function of the LET in the range of 10-100 keV µm−1. The response of the films got weaker with increasing the LET and showed no dependence on the ion species. The LET effect was quantified by introducing a modified expression for the relative effectiveness (RE) by which a unique RE value is assigned to a single LET. The RE defined in that way decreased from about 90% for LET of 10 keV µm−1 to less than 50% for LET of 100 keV µm−1. Similar behavior was observed for EBT3 and MD-V3 film models.
Plant neurobiology is a newly focused field of plant biology research that aims to understand how plants process the information they obtain from their environment to develop, prosper and reproduce ...optimally. The behavior plants exhibit is coordinated across the whole organism by some form of integrated signaling, communication and response system. This system includes long-distance electrical signals, vesicle-mediated transport of auxin in specialized vascular tissues, and production of chemicals known to be neuronal in animals. Here we review how plant neurobiology is being directed toward discovering the mechanisms of signaling in whole plants, as well as among plants and their neighbors.

Limited availability of proton irradiators optimized for high-dose-rate studies makes the preclinical research of proton FLASH therapy challenging. We assembled two proton irradiation platforms that ...are capable of delivering therapeutic doses to thin biological samples at dose rates equal to and above 100 Gy/s. We optimized and tested dosimetry protocols to assure accurate dose delivery regardless of the instantaneous dose rate. The simplicity of the experimental setups and availability of custom-designed sample holders allows these irradiation platforms to be easily adjusted to accommodate different types of samples, including cell monolayers, 3D tissue models and small animals. We have also fabricated a microfluidic flow-through device for irradiations of biological samples in suspension. We present one example of a measurement with accompanying preliminary results for each of the irradiation platforms. One irradiator was used to study the role of proton dose rate on cell survival for three cancer cell lines, while the other was used to investigate the depletion of oxygen from an aqueous solution by water radiolysis using short intense proton pulses. No dose-rate-dependent variation was observed between the survival fractions of cancer cells irradiated at dose rates of 0.1, 10 and 100 Gy/s up to 10 Gy. On the other hand, irradiations of Fricke solution at 1,000 Gy/s indicated full depletion of oxygen after proton doses of 107 Gy and 56 Gy for samples equilibrated with 21% and 4% oxygen, respectively.
In light of the rapidly increasing frequency of pediatric CT examinations, the purpose of our study was to assess the lifetime cancer mortality risks attributable to radiation from pediatric CT.
...Organ doses as a function of age-at-diagnosis were estimated for common CT examinations, and estimated attributable lifetime cancer mortality risks (per unit dose) for different organ sites were applied. Standard models that assume a linear extrapolation of risks from intermediate to low doses were applied. On the basis of current standard practice, the same exposures (milliampere-seconds) were assumed, independent of age.
The larger doses and increased lifetime radiation risks in children produce a sharp increase, relative to adults, in estimated risk from CT. Estimated lifetime cancer mortality risks attributable to the radiation exposure from a CT in a 1-year-old are 0.18% (abdominal) and 0.07% (head)-an order of magnitude higher than for adults-although those figures still represent a small increase in cancer mortality over the natrual background rate. In the United States, of approximately 600,000 abdominal and head CT examinations annually performed in children under the age of 15 years, a rough estimate is that 500 of these individuals might ultimately die from cancer attributable to the CT radiation.
The best available risk estimates suggest that pediatric CT will result in significantly increased lifetime radiation risk over adult CT, both because of the increased dose per milliampere-second, and the increased lifetime risk per unit dose. Lower milliampere-second settings can be used for children without significant loss of information. Although the risk-benefit balance is still strongly tilted toward benefit, because the frequency of pediatric CT examinations is rapidly increasing, estimates that quantitative lifetime radiation risks for children undergoing CT are not negligible may stimulate more active reduction of CT exposure settings in pediatric patients.
Prior studies have reported the prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in average-risk screening population ages 50-75 to be 0.7%-1.0%.
However, no estimates from studies enrolling individuals ...undergoing screening colonoscopy have been reported. The experience of ongoing studies enrolling average-risk individuals is that the prevalence rates are substantially lower. A 2020 study from a community-based cohort undergoing CRC screening with fecal immunochemical testing followed by diagnostic colonoscopy reported a CRC prevalence rate of 1.46 per 1000, or 0.15%.
The aim of our study is to report the screen-detected prevalence of CRC and advanced neoplasia in average-risk asymptomatic individuals from selected academic and community medical centers in the United States, Canada, and Germany and describe associated risk factors.
We obtained spectra in the wavelength range lambda = 995-1769 nm of all four known planets orbiting the star HR 8799. Using the suite of instrumentation known as Project 1640 on the Palomar 5 m Hale ...Telescope, we acquired data at two epochs. This allowed for multiple imaging detections of the companions and multiple extractions of low-resolution (R ~ 35) spectra. Data reduction employed two different methods of speckle suppression and spectrum extraction, both yielding results that agree. The spectra do not directly correspond to those of any known objects, although similarities with L and T dwarfs are present, as well as some characteristics similar to planets such as Saturn. We tentatively identify the presence of CH sub(4) along with NH sub(3) and/or C sub(2)H sub(2), and possibly CO sub(2) or HCN in varying amounts in each component of the system. Other studies suggested red colors for these faint companions, and our data confirm those observations. Cloudy models, based on previous photometric observations, may provide the best explanation for the new data presented here. Notable in our data is that these presumably co-eval objects of similar luminosity have significantly different spectra; the diversity of planets may be greater than previously thought. The techniques and methods employed in this paper represent a new capability to observe and rapidly characterize exoplanetary systems in a routine manner over a broad range of planet masses and separations. These are the first simultaneous spectroscopic observations of multiple planets in a planetary system other than our own.
Background
Esophageal dysfunction and gastro‐esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are common among patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although high‐dose proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) typically ...normalize esophageal acid exposure, the effectiveness of PPI therapy has not been systematically studied in SSc patients. The aim of this study was to characterize reflux in SSc patients on high‐dose PPI using esophageal pH‐impedance testing.
Methods
In this case‐controlled retrospective analysis, 38 patients fulfilling 2013 American College of Rheumatology SSc criteria who underwent esophageal pH‐impedance testing on twice‐daily PPI between January 2014 and March 2017 at a tertiary referral center were compared with a control‐cohort of 38 non‐SSc patients matched for PPI formulation and dose, hiatal hernia size, age, and gender. Patient clinical characteristics, including endoscopy and high‐resolution manometry findings, were assessed via chart review.
Key Results
On pH‐impedance, SSc patients had higher acid exposure times (AETs) than controls. Sixty‐one percent of the SSc patients and 18% of the control patients had a total AET ≥4.5% (P < .001). Systemic sclerosis patients also had significantly longer AETs, longer median bolus clearance, and lower nocturnal impedance values.
Conclusions & Inferences
Abnormal esophageal acid exposure despite high‐dose PPI therapy was common among patients with SSc. The lack of increased reflux episodes in the SSc patients, and longer bolus clearance times and lower nocturnal impedance, supports ineffective clearance as the potential mechanism. Systemic sclerosis patients may require adjunctive therapies to PPIs to control acid reflux.
Esophageal dysfunction and reflux are common in patients with systemic sclerosis yet the effectiveness of acid suppression therapy in these patients has not been systematically studied. Our study indicates that systemic sclerosis patients have significant esophageal acid exposure despite high‐dose proton pump inhibitor therapy, suggesting ineffective esophageal clearance as a mechanism. Patients with systemic sclerosis may need adjunctive therapies in addition to acid suppression to control their reflux.

Isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 (Idh1) is an important metabolic enzyme that produces NADPH by converting isocitrate to α-ketoglutarate. Idh1 is known to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced in ...cells by treatment with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro. Here, we used Idh1-deficient knockout (Idh1 KO) mice to investigate the role of Idh1 in antioxidant defense in vivo. Idh1 KO mice showed heightened susceptibility to death induced by LPS and exhibited increased serum levels of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6. The serum of LPS-injected Idh1 KO mice also contained elevated levels of AST, a marker of inflammatory liver damage. Furthermore, after LPS injection, livers of Idh1 KO mice showed histological evidence of elevated oxidative DNA damage compared with livers of wild-type (WT) mice. Idh1 KO livers showed a faster and more pronounced oxidative stress than WT livers. In line with that, Idh1 KO hepatocytes showed higher ROS levels and an increase in the NADP(+)/NADPH ratio when compared with hepatocytes isolated from WT mice. These results suggest that Idh1 has a physiological function in protecting cells from oxidative stress by regulating the intracellular NADP(+)/NADPH ratio. Our findings suggest that stimulation of Idh1 activity may be an effective therapeutic strategy for reducing oxidative stress during inflammatory responses, including the early stages of septic shock.

The search for new materials via compositional exploration has recently led to the discovery of entropy stabilized and high entropy ceramics. The chemical diversity in the cation sublattice of high ...entropy ceramics has led to many enhanced properties and applications such as reversible energy storage, low temperature water splitting, amorphous-like thermal transport in crystalline solids and enhanced mechanical properties. This work describes the synthesis and mechanical properties of high entropy (HfNbTaTiZr)Cx thin films as a function of carbon content. The nature of the bonding and microstructure evolves as the material transforms from metallic to ceramic to nanocomposite with variations in the quantity and types of carbon, yielding large variations in the film hardness. Through multiple characterization techniques and first principles investigations, we separate the roles of microstructure and bonding characteristics in the mechanical property development of (HfNbTaTiZr)Cx thin films. This study presents a strategy to establish the bonding, structure, and property relationships in chemically disordered high entropy ceramics, largely based on the relative populations of filled or empty antibonding states for which there are new abilities to do so in high configurational entropy systems that exhibit high solubility of diverse cations while retaining rocksalt structure.
