Context. Local-Group galaxies provide access to samples of X-ray source populations of whole galaxies. The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) completely covers the bar and eastern ...wing with a 5.6 deg2 area in the (0.2−12.0) keV band. Aims. To characterise the X-ray sources in the SMC field, we created a catalogue of point sources and sources with moderate extent. Sources with high extent (≥40′′) have been presented in a companion paper. Methods. We searched for point sources in the EPIC images using sliding-box and maximum-likelihood techniques and classified the sources using hardness ratios, X-ray variability, and their multi-wavelength properties. Results. The catalogue comprises 3053 unique X-ray sources with a median position uncertainty of 1.3′′ down to a flux limit for point sources of ~10-14 erg cm-2 s-1 in the (0.2−4.5) keV band, corresponding to 5 × 1033 erg s-1 for sources in the SMC. We discuss statistical properties, like the spatial distribution, X-ray colour diagrams, luminosity functions, and time variability. We identified 49 SMC high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXB), four super-soft X-ray sources (SSS), 34 foreground stars, and 72 active galactic nuclei (AGN) behind the SMC. In addition, we found candidates for SMC HMXBs (45) and faint SSSs (8) as well as AGN (2092) and galaxy clusters (13). Conclusions. We present the most up-to-date catalogue of the X-ray source population in the SMC field. In particular, the known population of X-ray binaries is greatly increased. We find that the bright-end slope of the luminosity function of Be/X-ray binaries significantly deviates from the expected universal high-mass X-ray binary luminosity function.

ABSTRACT
We present an optical, X-ray, and γ-ray study of 1SXPS J042749.2-670434, an eclipsing X-ray binary that has an associated γ-ray counterpart, 4FGL J0427.8-6704. This association has led to ...the source being classified as a transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) in an accreting state. We analyse 10.5 yr of Fermi LAT data and detect a γ-ray eclipse at the same phase as optical and X-ray eclipses at the >5 σ level, a significant improvement on the 2.8 σ level of the previous detection. The confirmation of this eclipse solidifies the association between the X-ray source and the γ-ray source, strengthening the tMSP classification. However, analysis of several optical data sets and an X-ray observation do not reveal a change in the source’s median brightness over long time-scales or a bi-modality on short time-scales. Instead, the light curve is dominated by flickering, which has a correlation time of 2.6 min alongside a potential quasi-periodic oscillation at ∼21 min. The mass of the primary and secondary stars is constrained to be $M_1=1.43^{+0.33}_{-0.19}$ M⊙ and $M_2=0.3^{+0.17}_{-0.12}$ M⊙ through modelling of the optical light curve. While this is still consistent with a white dwarf primary, we favour the tMSP in a low accretion state classification due to the significance of the γ-ray eclipse detection.
ABSTRACT
We report the results of eROSITA and NICER observations of the 2020 June outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0529.8−6556 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, along with the analysis of ...archival X-ray and optical data from this source. We find two anomalous features in the system’s behaviour. First, the pulse profile observed by NICER during maximum luminosity is similar to that observed by XMM–Newton in 2000, despite the fact that the X-ray luminosity was different by two orders of magnitude. In contrast, a modest decrease in luminosity in the 2020 observations generated a significant change in pulse profile. Secondly, we find that the historical optical outbursts are not strictly periodic, as would be expected if the outbursts were triggered by periastron passage, as is generally assumed. The optical peaks are also not coincident with the X-ray outbursts. We suggest that this behaviour may result from a misalignment of the Be star disc and the orbital plane, which might cause changes in the timing of the passage of the neutron star through the disc as it precesses. We conclude that the orbital period of the source remains unclear.
ABSTRACT
Binaries with a white dwarf primary and a main sequence secondary can be used to test our understanding of both single and binary star evolution. A small fraction of such systems experienced ...a common-envelope phase from which they emerged with a relatively short orbital period. Here, we present the characterization of an eclipsing post-common-envelope binary of this kind, TIC 60040774, based on the light curve provided by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), multiband photometry collated from the virtual observatory, and spectroscopic data obtained the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). With an orbital period of 0.404807 ± 0.000149 d this system consists of a young white dwarf paired with an M6.5 dwarf companion. We estimate the masses of the primary and secondary to be 0.598 ± 0.029 M⊙ and 0.107 ± 0.020 M⊙, while the effective temperatures are 14050 ± 360 K and 2759 ± 50 K, respectively. The eclipse ingress and egress profile is shallower than expected from a simple geometric model such that more precise high-cadence photometry is required to understand the nature of this system. Given the similarity of TIC 60040774 to systems like GK Vir and NN Ser, it will be worth tracking its eclipse times to check for the presence of one or more circumbinary planets.
Optical and near-infrared photometry, optical spectroscopy, and soft X-ray and UV monitoring of the changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC 2617 show that it continues to have the appearance of a ...type-1 Seyfert galaxy. An optical light curve for 2010–2016 indicates that the change of type probably occurred between 2010 October and 2012 February and was not related to the brightening in 2013. In 2016, NGC 2617 brightened again to a level of activity close to that in 2013 April. We find variations in all passbands and in both the intensities and profiles of the broad Balmer lines. A new displaced emission peak has appeared in Hβ. X-ray variations are well correlated with UV–optical variability and possibly lead by ∼2–3 d. The K band lags the J band by about 21.5 ± 2.5 d and lags the combined B + J filters by ∼25 d. J lags B by about 3 d. This could be because J-band variability arises from the outer part of the accretion disc, while K-band variability comes from thermal re-emission by dust. We propose that spectral-type changes are a result of increasing central luminosity causing sublimation of the innermost dust in the hollow bi-conical outflow. We briefly discuss various other possible reasons that might explain the dramatic changes in NGC 2617.
ABSTRACT
Astrometric noise (ϵ) in excess of parallax and proper motion is a potential signature of orbital wobble (ω) of individual components in binary star systems. The combination of X-ray ...selection with astrometric noise could then be a powerful tool for robustly isolating accreting binaries in large surveys. Here, we mine the Gaia EDR3 catalogue for Galactic sources with significant values of astrometric noise over the parameter space expected for known and candidate X-ray binaries (XRBs). Cross-matching our sample with the Chandra Source Catalogue returns a primary sample of ≈6500 X-ray sources with significant ϵ. X-ray detection efficiency for objects with significant ϵ is a factor of ≈4.5 times higher than in a matched control sample exhibiting low ϵ. The primary sample branches off the main sequence much more than control objects in colour–mag space, and includes a higher fraction of known binaries, variables, and young stellar object class types. However, values of ϵ reported in the Gaia pipeline releases so far can exceed expectations for individual XRBs with known semimajor axis size and other system parameters. It is likely that other factors (possibly attitude and modelling uncertainties, as well as source variability) currently dominate the observed excess noise in such systems. Confirmation of their nature must therefore await future Gaia releases. The full X-ray matched catalogue is released here to enable legacy follow-up.
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of a few seconds have been detected in some polars, the synchronised subclass of cataclysmic systems containing a strongly magnetised white dwarf which accretes ...matter from a red dwarf companion. The QPOs are thought to be related to instabilities of a shock formed in the accretion column, close to the white dwarf photosphere above the impact region. We present optical observations of the polar V834 Centauri performed with the fast ULTRACAM camera mounted on the ESO-VLT simultaneously in three filters (u′, He ii λ4686, r′) to study these oscillations and characterise their properties along the orbit when the column is seen at different viewing angles. Fast Fourier transforms and wavelet analysis have been performed and the mean frequency, rms amplitude, and coherence of the QPOs are derived; a detailed inspection of individual pulses has also been performed. The observations confirm the probable ubiquity of the QPOs for this source at all epochs when the source is in a high state, with observed mean amplitude of 2.1% (r′), 1.5% (He ii), and 0.6% (u′). The QPOs are present in the r′ filter at all phases of the orbital cycle, with a higher relative amplitude around the maximum of the light curve. They are also detected in the He ii and u′ filters but at a lower level. Trains of oscillations are clearly observed in the r′ light curve and can be mimicked by a superposition of damped sinusoids with various parameters. The QPO energy distribution is comparable to that of the cyclotron flux, consistent for the r′ and He ii filters but requiring a significant dilution in the u′ filter. New 1D hydrodynamical simulations of shock instabilities, adapted to the physical parameters of V834 Cen, can account for the optical QPO amplitude and X-ray upper limit assuming a cross section of the accretion column in the range ~(4 − 5) × 1014 cm2. However, the predicted frequency is larger than the observed one by an order of magnitude. This shortcoming indicates that the QPO generation is more complex than that produced in a homogeneous column and calls for a more realistic 3D treatment of the accretion flow in future modelling.

ABSTRACT
We present the discovery of ASASSN-18jd (AT 2018bcb), a luminous optical/ultraviolet(UV)/X-ray transient located in the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX J22434289–1659083 at z = 0.1192. Over the ...year after discovery, Swift UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) photometry shows the UV spectral energy distribution of the transient to be well modelled by a slowly shrinking blackbody with temperature $T \sim 2.5 \times 10^{4} \, {\rm K}$, a maximum observed luminosity of $L_{\rm max} = 4.5^{+0.6}_{-0.3}\times 10^{44} \, {\rm erg \,s}^{-1}$, and a radiated energy of $E = 9.6^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{51} \, {\rm erg}$. X-ray data from Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and XMM–Newton show a transient, variable X-ray flux with blackbody and power-law components that fade by nearly an order of magnitude over the following year. Optical spectra show strong, roughly constant broad Balmer emission and transient features attributable to He ii, N iii–v, O iii, and coronal Fe. While ASASSN-18jd shares similarities with tidal disruption events (TDEs), it is also similar to the newly discovered nuclear transients seen in quiescent galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei (AGNs).
Abstract
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) currently hosts around 23 high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) of which most are Be/X-ray binaries. The LMC XMM–Newton survey provided follow-up observations of ...previously known X-ray sources that were likely HMXBs, as well as identifying new HMXB candidates. In total, 19 candidate HMXBs were selected based on their X-ray hardness ratios. In this paper we present red and blue optical spectroscopy, obtained with Southern African Large Telescope and the South African Astronomical Observatory 1.9-m telescope, plus a timing analysis of the long-term optical light curves from OGLE to confirm the nature of these candidates. We find that nine of the candidates are new Be/X-ray binaries, substantially increasing the LMC Be/X-ray binary population. Furthermore, we present the optical properties of these new systems, both individually and as a group of all the BeXBs identified by the XMM–Newton survey of the LMC.
