Objective: This study investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on intergenerational solidarities in Poland, specifically looking at flows between members of four family generations in the ...context of first-time motherhood.
Background: Unlike other crises, which typically mean that family members rely on one another for support, the pandemic challenges the scope of family solidarities. Little is still known as to how families navigate the particular vulnerability of first-time mothers who might face obstacles in accessing family assistance during lockdowns.
Method: The empirical material originates from a Qualitative Longitudinal Study (QLS) on transitions to motherhood in Poland (GEMTRA project, 2018-2021) and features case studies of intergenerational family triads (a first-time mother, her mother, and her grandmother). Two cases have been selected from a large pool of over 100 interviews conducted in two waves.
Results: We argue that the crucial stage of family life reified in welcoming the first child serves as special grounds for examining how family support and intergenerational solidarities are maintained, altered, or prioritized during the COVID-19 pandemic. We demonstrate that distinct types of associational, affectual, consensual, functional, normative and structural solidarities are variably affected.
Conclusion: We propose a new angle for identifying key support recipients within intergenerational solidarity flows in families during the crisis. Two directions of solidarity flows, towards younger and older generations, respectively, are presented.
Tematykę artykułu stanowi łączenie rodzicielstwa ze studiami i pracą zawodową, które jest wyjątkową egzemplifikacją współczesnego nakładania się ról i wyzwań wynikających z konfliktu ...doświadczanego przez młode osoby realizujące jednocześnie liczne, konkurencyjne względem siebie role społeczne. Jest to efekt wyłaniający się z szerszego kontekstu społecznego, w którym zdobywanie wykształcenia na poziomie wyższym jest coraz powszechniejsze wśród młodych Polek i Polaków, a w szeregach studentów nie brakuje rodziców i osób o ugruntowanej pozycji na rynku pracy. Bazą empiryczną artykułu jest materiał zebrany w badaniu jakościowym przeprowadzonym na przełomie 2017 i 2018 roku. Na potrzeby artykułu przeanalizowano 30 wywiadów z jednocześnie pracującymi i studiującymi rodzicami. Respondenci łączą lub łączyli pracę zawodową, zdobywanie dyplomu uczelni oraz wychowywanie dzieci w różnym wieku (od 0 do 15 lat). Zaprezentowane wyniki wskazują na występowanie konfliktu ról, jednocześnie pokazując zróżnicowanie i uzależnienie poczucia konfliktu od takich elementów jak płeć, wsparcie społeczne czy też instytucjonalne. Konflikt w tej analizie jest ściśle powiązany z koncepcją „chciwych instytucji”, jakimi są edukacja, rodzicielstwo i praca zawodowa. Widoczna jest również normalizacja łączenia tych trzech aspektów życia jednostki przy jednoczesnym poczuciu konieczności realizowania się na wszystkich polach.
Changes in the intergenerational family relationships are typically seen through the prism of contemporary parents supporting their children long into adulthood, offering their households as ...'feathered nests' during extended transitions to adulthood. However, the majority of research in this realm comes from established welfare states of Western Europe and the Commonwealth and less explicitly addresses inequalities that mark these processes. Drawing on qualitative longitudinal research on transitions to adulthood in Poland, we use a data set of 127 interviews with university students and graduates to illustrate the process of leaving home in the Central and Easter European context. The paper accounts for both the objective (extensive/limited economic capital or resources) and subjective (fast/slow pace) dimensions crucial for how young people move out from parental homes. Our main contribution is a typology of Temporizers, Gymnasts, Runaways and Protectors as ideal types of pathways to leaving home in Poland.

This article explores the dynamics of personal relationships within a geographically mobile, large peer group (PG) over time. Based on a case-study of a PG examined within the broader Qualitative ...Longitudinal Study (QLS) on ‘Peer Groups & Migration’ in Poland, the analysis focuses on the transformations of friendships from early adolescence to adulthood. The paper sheds light on friendship relationships and gauges strength of bonds over fifteen years from a spatial perspective. By specifically examining three critical moments of the PG formation (ca. age 15), leaving home (ca. 18–19), and the current transition to mid-adulthood (ca. 27–29), a retrospective and temporally dynamic portrait of friendships continuously affected by mobility is proposed. We demonstrate the entanglement of youth friendships in space (mobility) and time, arguing that a rise of transnationalism did not alleviate the preference for having one’s friends in close spatial proximity.
Abstract This article offers novel insights into the mechanism of abortion stigma and its pervasive impact on attitudes toward abortion. Specifically, it tracks the impact of the restrictive Polish ...1993 law, known as the “abortion compromise,” on attitudes toward pregnancy terminations over three decades, exploring the role of abortion stigma in the observed shifts. Employing data from representative surveys and in-depth interviews with young women, this study demonstrates how gendered sexuality norms inscribed in the law are responsible for locating abortion in the realm of morality, thus intensifying its stigma. Remarkably, we uncover a unique convergence of “pro-choice” and “pro-life” perspectives in Poland. The growing unanimity of attitudes is attributed to the stigmatization of abortion that surpasses the medical or legal justifications of the 1993 law. Thus, the results crucially inform the strategies needed for the women’s rights movement aiming to liberalize the restrictive legislation.
Polskie rodziny doświadczają paradoksów wynikających z jednoczesnego dążenia do podtrzymywania ciągłości tradycji oraz pozostawania pod wpływem galopujących zmian społecznych. Zmienna wieku – czy ...szerzej: pokolenia – często uznawana jest za główną oś polaryzującą tzw. tradycyjne oraz nowe rodziny w Polsce. Mając na uwadze dokonującą się zmianę paradygmatyczną w socjologii rodzin, która mówi o przejściu od bycia rodziną do praktykowania rodziny, w artykule przyglądamy się porównawczo praktykom rodzinnym dwóch dorosłych pokoleń Polek na podstawie wyników badania jakościowego. Odpowiadamy na pytanie o to, jak dwa pokolenia realizują rodzinność w trzech obszarach, tak konkretnych rytuałów (śluby, święta), jak i codziennych działań. Analizowany materiał empiryczny został zgromadzony techniką indywidualnego wywiadu pogłębionego i pochodzi z badania „Tranzycja do macierzyństwa w trzech pokoleniach Polek. Międzygeneracyjne badanie podłużne” (GEMTRA). Tekst opiera się na pogłębionej, porównawczej i przekrojowej analizie 34 wywiadów (17 kobiet z dwóch pokoleń).
This article was motivated by the centenary (2018) of the seminal sociological monograph Polish Peasantin Europe and America by Thomas and Znaniecki (1918). It shows that classics can be not only ...ccasionallyreferenced but also read in-depth with the new contemporary concept of social remittances embedded in transnationalties. Reaching for the Polish Peasant in Europe and America aimed this analysis to revisit the precedingpassages of migration history and to revitalise the preliminary knowledge about human moves and social change.The article is a reminder and a positioner of Thomas and Znaniecki’s monograph in their contemporary migrationhistorical writings of Central Europe, not commonly referenced in international sociology. The methodologyof the qualitative content analysis with retrospective mapping the flow of information in the illustrative cases ofmigrant families applied in this article, helped to analyse resistance and changes of norms, values, practices andsocial capital affected by international migration and bundled as social remittances.

The article discusses family practices and gender relations in the interethnic couples of Polish women having foreign partners. While the theoretical framework engages with conceptualizations of ...family practice, binational coupledom, cultural diffusion and gender orders, the mix-methods methodological approach combines cases from three qualitative and thematically-linked research projects on Polish migration across three EU destination countries. We argue that spousal attitudes to gender orders shape the degree of cultural diffusion in interethnic couples formed by Polish women in Western Europe. In addition, we propose that gender orders of the spouses must not align with the ethnic belonging, but rather illuminate the pre-existing preferences for a traditional or egalitarian model. More broadly, we observe that women remain the key agents of sustaining or rejecting the Polish heritage and practices in the everyday life. In other words, the women determine the degree and shape of the intra-family cultural diffusion.
Chociaż migracje Polek cieszyły się dużym zainteresowaniem naukowym, szczyt rozwoju badań genderowych dotyczących wyjazdów zagranicznych objął przede wszystkim doświadczenia kobiet migrujących w ...latach 80. i 90. XX w., aż do pierwszego pięciolecia poakcesyjnego (2004–2009). Soczewka pokoleniowa oznacza, że badanymi były przede wszystkim migrujące Polki z pokoleń baby-boomers i X. Dekadę później migracje kształtują biografie Milenialsek, jednak wyróżniające je doświadczenia mobilności nie są szczegółowo eksplorowane poza kontekstem rynku pracy. Opierając się na materiale empirycznym z projektu „Paczki przyjaciół i migracje" (2016–2020), w artykule analizujemy wzory migracyjne wykształconych Polek z pokolenia Y. Pokazujemy decyzje mobilnościowe Milenialsek oraz śledzimy relacje między płcią a rolami społecznymi w życiu osobistym i rodzinnym młodych kobiet. Wskazujemy na nowe wzory migracji „mobilnego pokolenia wyboru", a także stwierdzamy, że o ile pewne relacje i role rodzinne Milenialsek uległy transformacji, o tyle sprzężenie mobilności z macierzyństwem zdaje się mniej podatne na międzypokoleniową zmianę.
