Since the 1995 discovery of the broad iron K-line emission from the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 (ref. 1), broad iron K lines have been found in emission from several other Seyfert galaxies, from ...accreting stellar-mass black holes and even from accreting neutron stars. The iron K line is prominent in the reflection spectrum created by the hard-X-ray continuum irradiating dense accreting matter. Relativistic distortion of the line makes it sensitive to the strong gravity and spin of the black hole. The accompanying iron L-line emission should be detectable when the iron abundance is high. Here we report the presence of both iron K and iron L emission in the spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495. The bright iron L emission has enabled us to detect a reverberation lag of about 30 s between the direct X-ray continuum and its reflection from matter falling into the black hole. The observed reverberation timescale is comparable to the light-crossing time of the innermost radii around a supermassive black hole. The combination of spectral and timing data on 1H 0707-495 provides strong evidence that we are witnessing emission from matter within a gravitational radius, or a fraction of a light minute, from the event horizon of a rapidly spinning, massive black hole.

GRB 160821B is a short duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected and localized by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in the outskirts of a spiral galaxy at z = 0.1613, at a projected physical offset of ...16 kpc from the galaxy’s center. We present X-ray, optical/nIR, and radio observations of its counterpart and model them with two distinct components of emission: a standard afterglow, arising from the interaction of the relativistic jet with the surrounding medium, and a kilonova, powered by the radioactive decay of the sub-relativistic ejecta. Broadband modelling of the afterglow data reveals a weak reverse shock propagating backward into the jet, and a likely jet-break at 3.5 d. This is consistent with a structured jet seen slightly off-axis (θview ∼ θcore) while expanding into a low-density medium (n ≈ 10−3 cm−3). Analysis of the kilonova properties suggests a rapid evolution towards red colours, similar toAT2017gfo, and a low-nIR luminosity, possibly due to the presence of a long-lived neutron star. The global properties of the environment, the inferred low mass (Mej <~ 0.006 Msun) and velocities (vej >~ 0.05c) of lanthanide-rich ejecta are consistent with a binary neutron star merger progenitor.
We present our recent progress on the relativistic modeling of electron-nucleus reactions and compare our predictions with inclusive C super(12)(e, e') experimental data in a wide kinematical region. ...The model, originally based on the superscaling phenomenon shown by electron-nucleus scattering data, has recently been improved through the inclusion of relativistic mean field theory effects that take into account the enhancement of the quasielastic transverse scaling function compared with its longitudinal counterpart. In this work, we extend the model to include the complete inelastic spectrum-resonant, nonresonant and deep inelastic scattering. We also discuss the impact of meson-exchange currents through the analysis of two-particle two-hole contributions to electromagnetic response functions evaluated within the framework of the relativistic Fermi gas, considering for the first time not only the transverse but also the longitudinal channel. The results show quite good agreement with data over the whole range of energy transfer, including the dip region between the quasielastic peak and the Delta resonance.

We present a derivative-free optimization algorithm coupled with a chemical process simulator for the optimal design of individual and complex distillation processes using a rigorous tray-by-tray ...model. The proposed approach serves as an alternative tool to the various models based on nonlinear programming (NLP) or mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) . This is accomplished by combining the advantages of using a commercial process simulator (Aspen Hysys), including especially suited numerical methods developed for the convergence of distillation columns, with the benefits of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) metaheuristic algorithm, which does not require gradient information and has the ability to escape from local optima. Our method inherits the superstructure developed in Yeomans H. ; Grossmann I. E. Optimal design of complex distillation columns using rigorous tray-by-tray disjunctive programming models. Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2000, 39 (11), 4326–4335 , in which the nonexisting trays are considered as simple bypasses of liquid and vapor flows. The implemented tool provides the optimal configuration of distillation column systems, which includes continuous and discrete variables, through the minimization of the total annual cost (TAC). The robustness and flexibility of the method is proven through the successful design and synthesis of three distillation systems of increasing complexity.

Currently, one alternative for dietary fish oil (FO) in aquafeeds is vegetable oils (VO) that are devoid of omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). Entirely new sources of ...n-3 LC-PUFA such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids through de novo production are a potential solution to fill the gap between supply and demand of these important nutrients. Camelina sativa was metabolically engineered to produce a seed oil (ECO) with >20% EPA and its potential to substitute for FO in Atlantic salmon feeds was tested. Fish were fed with one of the three experimental diets containing FO, wild-type camelina oil (WCO) or ECO as the sole lipid sources for 7weeks. Inclusion of ECO did not affect any of the performance parameters studied and enhanced apparent digestibility of individual n-6 and n-3 PUFA compared to dietary WCO. High levels of EPA were maintained in brain, liver and intestine (pyloric caeca), and levels of DPA and DHA were increased in liver and intestine of fish fed ECO compared to fish fed WCO likely due to increased LC-PUFA biosynthesis based on up-regulation of the genes. Fish fed ECO showed slight lipid accumulation within hepatocytes similar to that with WCO, although not significantly different to fish fed FO. The regulation of a small number of genes could be attributed to the specific effect of ECO (311 features) with metabolism being the most affected category. The EPA oil from transgenic Camelina (ECO) could be used as a substitute for FO, however it is a hybrid oil containing both FO (EPA) and VO (18:2n-6) fatty acid signatures that resulted in similarly mixed metabolic and physiological responses.
•A high-EPA oil (ECO) derived from transgenic Camelina was evaluated as a substitute for fish oil (FO) in salmon feeds•Substitution of FO by ECO did not affect fish performance and enhanced apparent digestibility of fatty acids compared to FO•ECO-fed fish maintained high levels of EPA in their tissues and showed no major transcriptomic changes in pyloric caeca.•ECO was demonstrated to be a potentially suitable substitute for FO in salmon feeds.

Angioedema is defined as localized and self‐limiting edema of the subcutaneous and submucosal tissue, due to a temporary increase in vascular permeability caused by the release of vasoactive ...mediator(s). When angioedema recurs without significant wheals, the patient should be diagnosed to have angioedema as a distinct disease. In the absence of accepted classification, different types of angioedema are not uniquely identified. For this reason, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology gave its patronage to a consensus conference aimed at classifying angioedema. Four types of acquired and three types of hereditary angioedema were identified as separate forms from the analysis of the literature and were presented in detail at the meeting. Here, we summarize the analysis of the data and the resulting classification of angioedema.

Experimental evidence indicates that bainitic ferrite formed by transformation at low temperatures (200–350°C) contains quantities of carbon in solid solution far beyond those expected from ...para-equilibrium. A change in the conventional symmetry of the bainitic ferrite lattice from cubic to tetragonal explains the abnormal solid solubility detected. This carbon supersaturation was measured by atom probe tomography, and the tetragonality of the bainitic ferrite, was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

This multicenter phase I trial was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of bortezomib (Bz) as part of both the conditioning regimen and the graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) prophylaxis. ...Patients received fludarabine, melphalan and Bz (days -9 and -2). GVHD prophylaxis consisted of Bz (days +1, +4, and +7), sirolimus (Siro) from day -5 and tacrolimus (Tk) from -3 (except the first five patients that did not receive Tk). Twenty-five patients with poor prognostic multiple myeloma were included. Eleven out of the 19 patients had high-risk features. Out of the 21 patients evaluable at day +100, 14 were in CR (67%) and 7 (33%) in PR. Cumulative incidence (CI) of nonrelapse mortality at 1 year was 24%. CI of grades 2-4 and 3-4 acute GvHD was 35% and 10%, respectively; CI of chronic GvHD was 35% and 55% at 1 and 2 years, respectively. Overall and event free survival at 2 years were 64% and 31%, respectively. Bz as part of the conditioning regimen and in the combination with Siro/tacrolimus for GvHD prophylaxis is safe and effective allowing an optimal disease control early after transplant and reducing the risk of GvHD.
