The market for value added services in Europe is demand driven. Therefore it is very important to identify the obstacles which can slacken the demand growth. These obstacles, principally related to ...difficulties in accessing a VAS (value-added service), can be overcome by adding some features to the networks connecting VAS providers to their users. CSELT, within the AIDA (access interface for data applications) project, implemented a prototype of a network, in accordance with an OSI reference model, providing features to more easily access VASs. The basic technologies that will foster openness and problems of availability and deployment are outlined. After an outline of an evolution scenario, the market demands, foreseen in Italy are addressed. The steps that will be pursued are discussed, particularly in the context of customer control, a concept embracing a variety of services that require a certain degree of openness in the network, systems, and organization.< >
