This paper focuses on the understanding of the Random Telegraph Signal (RTS) in Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD). We studied the RTS of two different SPAD layouts, designed and implemented in a ...150-nm CMOS process, after proton irradiation. The two structures are characterized by different junction types: the first structure is constituted by a P+/Nwell junction, while the second is formed by a Pwell/Niso junction. RTS occurrence has been measured in about one thousand SPAD pixels and the differences addressed in two layouts are motivated and discussed. Hypotheses on the RTS origin are drawn by analyzing the RTS time constants and the RTS occurrence evolution as a function of the annealing temperature.

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) in the CMOS technology are very attractive solution for photon detection due to the excellent timing resolution achievable. Unfortunately, such devices suffer ...from large values of the dark count (DC) pedestals. In this paper, we analyzed a test chip containing SPADs with different layouts, implemented in the 150-nm CMOS technology. The behavior of such devices has been investigated after proton irradiation. It is observed that, after irradiation, the DC rate switches between two or more discrete levels, phenomenon known as random telegraph signal (RTS). The effect is related to the density and distribution of defects in the semiconductor lattice. RTS characteristics have been studied as the function of both temperature and bias voltage. Discussion of results and main hypotheses on defect types responsible for RTS are reported.

We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics ...experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example.

The effects induced by radiation on an innovative photo-sensor consisting of Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes arrays, implemented in a 150-nm CMOS technology, are presented. Samples were irradiated ...with a proton beam at different doses, and the impact of radiation-induced damage on the performance of the devices in terms of Dark Count Rate has been estimated. Furthermore, possible methods to reduce the impact of radiation-induced damage are discussed.

CMOS Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) have been introduced recently in many scientific applications. This paper reports on the performance, in terms of Dark Count Rate (DCR), of a photo-sensor ...based on CMOS SPADs. The device has been subjected to an accurate investigation, in order to evaluate its behaviour in a radiation environment. Several irradiation tests were conducted, and a complete survey of their effects on the DCR behaviour has been performed. An overall increase in the DCR level has been measured, meaning that new defects have been introduced in the space charge region of the SPADs. Furthermore, for a fraction of the SPADs, DCR measurements show a Random Telegraph Signal (RTS) temporal pattern.
We present a measurement of R_{K^{*}}, the branching fraction ratio B(B→K^{*}μ^{+}μ^{-})/B(B→K^{*}e^{+}e^{-}), for both charged and neutral B mesons. The ratio for the charged case R_{K^{*+}} is the ...first measurement ever performed. In addition, we report absolute branching fractions for the individual modes in bins of the squared dilepton invariant mass q^{2}. The analysis is based on a data sample of 711 fb^{-1}, containing 772×10^{6} BBover ¯ events, recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The obtained results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Proton irradiation effects on a Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) device manufactured using a 150-nm CMOS process are presented. An irradiation campaign has been carried out with protons of 20 ...MeV and 24 MeV on several samples of a test chip containing SPADs arrays with two different junction layouts. The dark count rate distributions have been analyzed as a function of the displacement damage dose. Annealing and cooling have been investigated as possible damage mitigation approaches. We also discuss, through a space radiation simulation, the suitability of such devices on several space mission case-studies.

We report the result for a search for the leptonic decay of B+→μ+νμ using the full Belle dataset of 711 fb−1 of integrated luminosity at the ϒ(4S) resonance. In the Standard Model leptonic B-meson ...decays are helicity and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa suppressed. To maximize sensitivity an inclusive tagging approach is used to reconstruct the second B meson produced in the collision. The directional information from this second B meson is used to boost the observed μ into the signal B-meson rest frame, in which the μ has a monochromatic momentum spectrum. Though its momentum is smeared by the experimental resolution, this technique improves the analysis sensitivity considerably. Analyzing the μ momentum spectrum in this frame we find B(B+→μ+νμ)=(5.3±2.0±0.9)×10−7 with a one-sided significance of 2.8 standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. This translates to a frequentist upper limit of B(B+→μ+νμ)<8.6×10−7 at 90% confidence level. The experimental spectrum is then used to search for a massive sterile neutrino, B+→μ+N, but no evidence is observed for a sterile neutrino with a mass in a range of 0–1.5 GeV. The determined B+→μ+νμ branching fraction limit is further used to constrain the mass and coupling space of the type II and type III two-Higgs-doublet models.

Using 980 fb-1 of data at and around the Υ(nS)(n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, the two-photon process γγ → γψ(2S) is ...studied from the threshold to 4.2 GeV for the first time. Two structures are seen in the invariant mass distribution of γψ(2S): one at MR1 = 3922.4 ± 6.5 ± 2.0 MeV/c2 with a width of ΓR1 = 22 ± 17 ± 4 MeV, and another at MR2 = 4014.3 ± 4.0 ± 1.5 MeV/c2 with a width of ΓR2 = 4 ± 11 ± 6 MeV; the signals are parametrized with the incoherent sum of two Breit- Wigner functions. The first structure is consistent with the X(3915) or the χc2(3930), and the local statistical significance is determined to be 3.1σ with the systematic uncertainties included. The second matches none of the known charmonium or charmonium like states, and its global significance is determined to be 2.8σ including the look-elsewhere effect. The production rates are Γγγ B(R1 → γψ(2S)) = 9.8 ± 3.6 ± 1.2 eV assuming (JPC, |λ|) = (0++, 0) or 2.0 ± 0.7 ± 0.2 eV with (2++, 2) for the first structure and Γγγ B(R2 → γψ(2S)) = 6.2 ± 2.2 ± 0.8 eV with (0++, 0) or 1.2 ± 0.4 ± 0.2 eV with (2++, 2) for the second one. Furthermore, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic, and λ is the helicity.
