A line-bisecting test was administered to 250 highly skilled right-handed athletes and a control group of 60 right-handed age matched non-athletes. Results revealed that athletes made overwhelmingly ...more rightward errors than non-athletes, who predominantly bisected lines to the left of the veridical center. These findings were interpreted in the context of previous EEG research on athletes and brain localization studies of select personality traits. A preliminary theory (Group Cortical Organization and Activation Theory) that highly skilled athletes and other specific homogeneous populations may have developed a unique cortical organization or response system that mediates relative tendencies in cerebral activation was advanced. The potential utility of the line-bisecting test as an assessment and intervention tool in sports was discussed.

Because the psychophysiological approach to the assessment of critical moments can be
laborious, a quick, efficient, and reliable method for assessing global psychological
performance is needed. An ...emerging method that I am developing involves monitoring
and analyzing heart activity over the course of an entire competition because it appears to
be the physiological measure that best illuminates mind-body interactions. It is also the
only measure that can be reliably monitored during actual competition in a relatively
nonintrusive manner, making it ideal for assessing psychological performance during
critical moments of competition.
Although it is preferable to assess psychophysiological responding during actual
competition, the nature of many sports can make on-the-field assessment difficult.
Because of the intense movement ...associated with many sports, data can be compromised
as motion and impact may cause electrodes to shift, resulting in artifact (faulty readings).
Moreover, because physiological monitoring can be intrusive, some officials, coaches,
and athletes may not be willing to participate in an elaborate system of physiological
assessment. Although the credibility of psychological assessment of athletes is ultimately
dependent on deriving ecologically valid data during real competition, an alternative firststep approach is to use psychophysiological stress testing (PST) off the playing field to
assess response tendencies in the presence of induced stressors. These experimentally
induced responses may help predict maladaptive physiological tendencies during actual
competition and guide mental training interventions to counter them.
