We use classical molecular dynamics (MD) to study electron-ion temperature equilibration in two-component plasmas in regimes for which the presence of coupled collective modes has been predicted to ...substantively reduce the equilibration rate. Guided by previous kinetic theory work, we examine hydrogen plasmas at a density of n=10^{26}cm^{-3}, T_{i}=10^{5}K, and 10^{7}K<T_{e}<10^{9}K. The nonequilibrium classical MD simulations are performed with interparticle interactions modeled by quantum statistical potentials (QSPs). Our MD results indicate (i) a large effect from time-varying potential energy, which we quantify by appealing to an adiabatic two-temperature equation of state, and (ii) a notable deviation in the energy equilibration rate when compared to calculations from classical Lenard-Balescu theory including the QSPs. In particular, it is shown that the energy equilibration rates from MD are more similar to those of the theory when coupled modes are neglected. We suggest possible reasons for this surprising result and propose directions of further research along these lines.

The general principles of scaling are discussed, followed by a survey of the important dimensionless parameters of fluid dynamics including radiation and magnetic fields, and of non-LTE spectroscopy. ...The values of the parameters are reviewed for a variety of astronomical and laboratory environments. It is found that parameters involving transport coefficients - the fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers - have enormous values for the astronomical problems that are not reached in the lab. The parameters that measure the importance of radiation are also scarcely reached in the lab. This also means that the lab environments are much closer to LTE than the majority of astronomical examples. Some of the astronomical environments are more magnetically dominated than anything in the lab. The conclusion is that a good astronomical environment for simulation in a given lab experiment can be found, but that the reverse is much more difficult.

Hot electrons created by short, intense laser pulses can heat solid density material to temperatures of order 500 eV. Inertial confinement can maintain such hot-dense plasmas for times of order ...10 ps. This provides a platform for measurement of basic properties of hot dense matter, such as opacity and equation-of-state. In this paper we describe the role of computational modeling in the design and analysis of such opacity experiments. We describe a method to model the hot electron transport and deposition and the resulting target radiation-hydrodynamics. We present several design concepts to achieve uniform, long-lasting plasmas.

We study the problem of electron-ion temperature equilibration in plasmas. We consider pure H at various densities and temperatures and Ar-doped H at temperatures high enough so that the Ar is fully ...ionized. Two theoretical approaches are used: classical molecular dynamics (MD) with statistical two-body potentials and a generalized Lenard-Balescu (GLB) theory capable of treating multicomponent weakly coupled plasmas. The GLB is used in two modes: (1) with the quantum dielectric response in the random-phase approximation (RPA) together with the pure Coulomb interaction and (2) with the classical (ℏ→0) dielectric response (both with and without local-field corrections) together with the statistical potentials. We find that the MD results are described very well by classical GLB including the statistical potentials and without local-field corrections (RPA only); worse agreement is found when static local-field effects are included, in contradiction to the classical pure-Coulomb case with like charges. The results of the various approaches are all in excellent agreement with pure-Coulomb quantum GLB when the temperature is high enough. In addition, we show that classical calculations with statistical potentials derived from the exact quantum two-body density matrix produce results in far better agreement with pure-Coulomb quantum GLB than classical calculations performed with older existing statistical potentials.

We examine the performance of pure boron, boron carbide, high density carbon, and boron nitride ablators in the polar direct drive exploding pusher (PDXP) platform. The platform uses the polar direct ...drive configuration at the National Ignition Facility to drive high ion temperatures in a room temperature capsule and has potential applications for plasma physics studies and as a neutron source. The higher tensile strength of these materials compared to plastic enables a thinner ablator to support higher gas pressures, which could help optimize its performance for plasma physics experiments, while ablators containing boron enable the possibility of collecting additional data to constrain models of the platform. Applying recently developed and experimentally validated equation of state models for the boron materials, we examine the performance of these materials as ablators in 2D simulations, with particular focus on changes to the ablator and gas areal density, as well as the predicted symmetry of the inherently 2D implosion.

We describe the status of a new time-dependent simulation capability for dense plasmas. The backbone of this multi-institutional effort – the Cimarron Project – is the massively parallel molecular ...dynamics (MD) code “ddcMD,” developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The project’s focus is material conditions such as exist in inertial confinement fusion experiments, and in many stellar interiors: high temperatures, high densities, significant electromagnetic fields, mixtures of high- and low-
Z elements, and non-Maxwellian particle distributions. Of particular importance is our ability to incorporate into this classical MD code key atomic, radiative, and nuclear processes, so that their interacting effects under non-ideal plasma conditions can be investigated. This paper summarizes progress in computational methodology, discusses strengths and weaknesses of quantum statistical potentials as effective interactions for MD, explains the model used for quantum events possibly occurring in a collision, describes two new experimental efforts that play a central role in our validation work, highlights some significant results obtained to date, outlines concepts now being explored to deal more efficiently with the very disparate dynamical timescales that arise in fusion plasmas, and provides a careful comparison of quantum effects on electron trajectories predicted by more elaborate dynamical methods.

Here we present a discussion of kinetic theory treatments of linear electrical and thermal transport in hydrogen plasmas, for a regime of interest to inertial confinement fusion applications. In ...order to assess the accuracy of one of the more involved of these approaches, classical Lenard-Balescu theory, we perform classical molecular dynamics simulations of hydrogen plasmas using 2-body quantum statistical potentials and compute both electrical and thermal conductivity from our particle trajectories using the Kubo approach. Our classical Lenard-Balescu results employing the identical statistical potentials agree well with the simulations. Comparison between quantum Lenard-Balescu and classical Lenard-Balescu for conductivities then allows us to both validate and critique the use of various statistical potentials for the prediction of plasma transport properties. Lastly, these findings complement our earlier MD/kinetic theory work on temperature equilibration, and reach similar conclusions as to which forms of statistical potentials best reproduce true quantum behavior.
