The HERSCHEL detector consists of a set of scintillating counters, designed to increase the coverage of the LHCb experiment in the high-rapidity regions on either side of the main spectrometer. The ...new detector improves the capabilities of LHCb for studies of diffractive interactions, most notably Central Exclusive Production. In this paper the construction, installation, commissioning, and performance of HERSCHEL are presented.
A test of lepton universality, performed by measuring the ratio of the branching fractions of the $B^0 → K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0$ → $K^{*0}e^+e^-$ decays, $R_{K^{*0}}$, is presented. The $K^{*0}$ ...meson is reconstructed in the final state $K^+π^-$, which is required to have an invariant mass within 100 MeV/c2 of the known $K^*$ (892)0 mass. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 3 fb-1, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The ratio is measured in two regions of the dilepton invariant mass squared, q2, to be R K ∗ 0 = { 0.66 − + 0.07 0.11 ( s t a t ) ± 0.03 ( s y s t ) f o r 0.045 < q 2 < 1.1 G e V 2 / c 4 , 0.69 − + 0.07 0.11 ( s t a t ) ± 0.05 ( s y s t ) f o r 1.1 < q 2 < 6.0 G e V 2 / c 4 . The corresponding 95.4% confidence level intervals are 0.52, 0.89 and 0.53, 0.94. The results, which represent the most precise measurements of $R_{K^{*0}}$ to date, are compatible with the Standard Model expectations at the level of 2.1–2.3 and 2.4–2.5 standard deviations in the two q2 regions, respectively.
The first observation of exotic states with a new quark content ccus decaying to the J/Psi K+ final state is reported with high significance from an amplitude analysis of the B+-> J/ Psi phi K+ ...decay. The analysis is carried out using proton-proton collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb- 1 collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The most significant state, Z(cs)(4000)+, has a mass of 4003 +/- 6 (-14) (+4) MeV, a width of 131 +/- 15 +/- 26 MeV, and spin parity J(P) = 1(+), where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new 1(+) X(4685) state decaying to the J/Psi phi final state is also observed with high significance. In addition, the four previously reported J/Psi phi states are confirmed and two more exotic states, Z(cs) (4220) (+) and X(4630), are observed with significance exceeding 5 standard deviations.

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and ...mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the (DD0)-D-0 pi(+) mass spectrum just below the D*+D-0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T-cc(+), tetraquark with a quark content of cc (u) over bar(d) over bar and spin-parity quantum numbers J(P) =1(+). Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D*(+) mesons is consistent with the observed D-0 pi(+) mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the DID system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T-cc(+), state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T-cc(+), state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

An amplitude analysis of B- -> J/psi Lambda(p) over bar decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and ...13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). A narrow resonance in the J/psi Lambda system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.2 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.4 MeV and 7.0 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.3 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The spin is determined to be 1/2 and negative parity is preferred. Because of the small Q-value of the reaction, the most precise single measurement of the B- mass to date, 5279.44 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.07 MeV, is obtained.

A simultaneous analysis of the B thorn & RARR; K thorn e thorn e- and B0 & RARR; K & DBLBOND;0e thorn e- decays is performed to test muonelectron universality in two ranges of the square ...of the dilepton invariant mass, q2. The measurement uses a sample of beauty meson decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1. A sequence of multivariate selections and strict particle identification requirements produce a higher signal purity and a better statistical sensitivity per unit luminosity than previous LHCb lepton universality tests using the same decay modes. Residual backgrounds due to misidentified hadronic decays are studied using data and included in the fit model. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q2 interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.
