This paper analyzes the effects of the rotor position error in the performance of field-oriented-controlled permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives intended for electric vehicle (EV) ...traction applications. A special focus is given to the torque ripple generated along the characteristic trajectories in the different operating regions of the PMSM. An extended and generalized model of the torque ripple produced by the PMSM as a function of the rotor position error is analytically deduced. An infinite-speed interior-(I)PMSM drive and a finite-speed surface-mounted (SM)-PMSM drive are considered for the simulations carried out in MATLAB-SimPowerSystems. The experimental results have been validated with a TM4 EV drive controlling an 80-kW SM-PMSM. The torque ripple has been evaluated for both motoring and regenerative braking operation modes under maximum torque conditions going from 100 N · m at 1000 r/min up to 55 N · m at 9000 r/min. The obtained simulation and experimental results demonstrate the good accuracy of the proposed model for evaluating the torque ripple produced in PMSMs due to the error from the rotor position sensor.

'Power Quality' comprehensively identifies, classifies, analyses and quantifies all associated power quality problems, including the direct integration of renewable energy sources in the distribution ...system, and systematically delivers mitigation techniques to overcome these problems.
The protection of the sensitive unbalanced nonlinear loads from sag/swell, distortion, and unbalance in supply voltage is achieved economically using the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). A simple ...generalized algorithm based on basic synchronous-reference-frame theory has been developed for the generation of instantaneous reference compensating voltages for controlling a DVR. This novel algorithm makes use of the fundamental positive-sequence phase voltages extracted by sensing only two unbalanced and/or distorted line voltages. The algorithm is general enough to handle linear as well as nonlinear loads. The compensating voltages when injected in series with a distribution feeder by three single-phase H-bridge voltage-source converters with a constant switching frequency hysteresis band voltage controller tightly regulate the voltage at the load terminals against any power quality problems on the source side. A capacitor-supported DVR does not need any active power during steady-state operation because the injected voltage is in quadrature with the feeder current. The proposed control strategy is validated through extensive simulation and real-time experimental studies.
This paper deals with control of a solar-photovoltaic (PV) power-generating system interfaced with the grid. A sliding mode control approach is used for achieving maximum power tracking control of a ...solar-PV array. The Lyapunov function-based control approach is designed and modeled for the dc-ac inverter to serve the functions of an active power injection to the grid, balanced grid currents at unity power factor and load currents harmonics compensation. The proposed approaches eliminate the need of adjustment of system parameters under changing loads and generation scenario. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategies is established using its stability analyses. The performance of the solar-PV power-generating system with the proposed control algorithms is demonstrated using simulation and experimental studies under various operating conditions.
An electric vehicle uses multiple energy-storage systems to power the traction motor. Dual-source inverters (DSIs) are used for single-stage power conversion by skipping the dc/dc boost converter ...stage; therefore, eliminating the passive magnetic storing element which improves the overall efficiency of the drive; moreover, multiple energy-storage systems improve the power density of the system. This article discusses the fine control of a traction motor from zero speed to rated speed supplied through a dual-source inverter. Field-oriented control with space vector modulation technique is applied to achieve closed-loop control. Two dc sources are used, one having a higher-voltage battery and one a lower-voltage battery. The higher-voltage battery is the main battery which supplies power to the traction motor, whereas the lower-voltage battery supplies power to supplementary loads of the EV. This article presents improved dynamic behaviour of an induction-motor-driven EV fed from a dual-source inverter using modified closed-loop field-oriented control with space vector modulation. The improvement includes reduced control complexity due to space vector modulation and achieving the option of EV operation in an emergent situation using the same converter and control system. The simulated performance of the presented system is obtained in MATLAB/Simulink. A step-down experimental prototype is used for verification of effective control of the induction motor as the EV is under constant torque variable speed operation with real-time parameters such as power, power factor, current harmonics, and voltage/current stresses across the switch using two batteries individually.

In this paper, the predictive-based control with bacterial foraging optimization technique for power management in a standalone microgrid is studied and implemented. The heuristic optimization method ...based on the social foraging behavior of Escherichia coli bacteria is employed to determine the power references from the non-renewable energy sources and loads of the proposed configuration, which consists of a fixed speed diesel generator and battery storage system (BES). The two-stage configuration is controlled to maintain the DC-link voltage constant, regulate the AC voltage and frequency, and improve the power quality, simultaneously. For these tasks, on the AC side, the obtained power references are used as input signals to the predictive-based control. With the help of the system parameters, the predictive-based control computes all possible states of the system on the next sampling time and compares them with the estimated power references obtained using the bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) technique to get the inverter current reference. For the DC side, the same concept based on the predictive approach is employed to control the DC-DC buck-boost converter by regulating the DC-link voltage using the forward Euler method to generate the discrete-time model to predict in real-time the BES current. The proposed control strategies are evaluated using simulation results obtained with Matlab/Simulink in presence of different types of loads, as well as experimental results obtained with a small-scale microgrid.

In this paper enhanced control strategies for standalone microgrids based on solar photovoltaic systems (SVPAs) and diesel engine driven fixed speed synchronous generators, are presented. ...Single-phase d-q theory-based sliding mode controller for voltage source converter voltage source converter (VSC) is employed to mitigate harmonics, balance diesel generator (DG) current, and to inject the generated power by SVPA into local grid. To achieve fast dynamic response with zero steady-state error during transition, sliding mode controller for inner control loop is employed. To achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT) from SVPA without using any MPPT method, a DC-DC buck boost converter supported by battery storage system is controlled using a new control strategy based on sliding mode control with boundary layer. In addition, modeling and detailed stability analysis are performed. The performance of the developed control strategies, are validate by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and in real-time using hardware prototype.

The high penetration of renewable energy sources in modern distribution networks poses challenges for grid voltage regulation. In this study, a multi-agent distributed voltage control strategy based ...on the proximal Jacobian alternating direction method of multipliers (PJ-ADMM) is proposed for distribution power systems with a high penetration of photovoltaic (PV) resources coordinated with battery energy storage systems (BESS). In this context, the active and reactive power outputs of the PV are locally optimized through smart inverters to improve the grid voltage with minimum power loss. Uncertainties associated with solar energy generation and load demands are considered in the defined scenarios. This study consists of two phases. In the first phase, the voltage control problem is formulated as an optimization problem to regulate the voltages within an acceptable limit with fast convergence. In the second phase, a coordinated voltage control strategy for smart PV inverters and BESS is proposed to allocate the power capacity of the battery energy storage systems and the active power loss reduction. Finally, the proposed method is tested on modified IEEE 13-bus, 33-bus and 141-bus distribution systems using MATLAB/Simulink and MATPOWER. A comparison of the results of the voltage profiles with and without the control algorithm demonstrated the efficacy, robustness, and scalability of the distributed scheme for voltage improvement and optimal utilization of PV power under different scenarios.
This paper presents a novel single-phase (SP) active-neutral point clamped (ANPC) five-level bidirectional converter (FLBC) for enhancing the power quality (PQ) during the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and ...vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation of an electric vehicle (EV) charger connected in series. This EV charger is based on a dual-active half-bridge DC-DC converter (DAHBC) with a high frequency isolation transformer. Unlike the comparable ANPC topologies found in literature, the proposed one has two more switches, i.e., ten instead of eight. However, with the addition of these components, the proposed multilevel converter not only becomes capable of properly balancing the voltage of the DC-link split capacitors under various step-changing conditions but it achieves a better efficiency, a lower stress of the switching devices and a more even distribution of the power losses. The resulting grid-tied ANPC-SPFLBC and DAHBC are accurately controlled with a cascaded control strategy and a single-phase shift (SPS) control technique, respectively. The simulation results obtained with MATLAB-SimPowerSystems as well as the experimental results obtained in laboratory validate the proposed ANPC-SPFLBC for a set of exhaustive tests in both V2G and G2V modes. A detailed power quality analysis carried out with a Fluke 43B alike demonstrates the good performance of the proposed topology.
