We present a measurement of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature power spectrum using data from the recently completed South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. We report ...CMB temperature anisotropy power over the multipole range 650 < l < 3000. We fit the SPT bandpowers, combined with the 7 yr Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP7) data, with a six-parameter ACDM cosmological model and find that the two datasets are consistent and well fit by the model. Adding SPT measurements significantly improves ACDM parameter constraints; in particular, the constraint on theta sub(s) tightens by a factor of 2.7. The impact of gravitational lensing is detected at 8.1sigma, the most significant detection to date. These new constraints on n sub(s) and r have significant implications for our understanding of inflation, which we discuss in the context of selected single-field inflation models.
Nosocomial infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii have increased in recent years. Isolates of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MDRAB) have been recovered in Taiwan since 1999. The ...characteristics of 55 patients with MDRAB bacteraemia infections occurring between January 2003 and February 2005 were analysed retrospectively. The overall 30-day mortality rate was 49%. The portal of entry was identified in 80% of patients, with the respiratory tract being implicated most frequently. Among the different antimicrobial regimens prescribed, the combination of a carbapenem and ampicillin-sulbactam was associated with a better outcome than the combination of a carbapenem and amikacin, or a carbapenem alone.

Control over the interaction between single photons and individual optical emitters is an outstanding problem in quantum science and engineering. It is of interest for ultimate control over light ...quanta, as well as for potential applications such as efficient photon collection, single-photon switching and transistors, and long-range optical coupling of quantum bits. Recently, substantial advances have been made towards these goals, based on modifying photon fields around an emitter using high-finesse optical cavities. Here we demonstrate a cavity-free, broadband approach for engineering photon-emitter interactions via subwavelength confinement of optical fields near metallic nanostructures. When a single CdSe quantum dot is optically excited in close proximity to a silver nanowire, emission from the quantum dot couples directly to guided surface plasmons in the nanowire, causing the wire's ends to light up. Non-classical photon correlations between the emission from the quantum dot and the ends of the nanowire demonstrate that the latter stems from the generation of single, quantized plasmons. Results from a large number of devices show that efficient coupling is accompanied by more than 2.5-fold enhancement of the quantum dot spontaneous emission, in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Using cold atoms to simulate strongly interacting quantum systems is an exciting frontier of physics. However, because atoms are nominally neutral point particles, this limits the types of ...interaction that can be produced. We propose to use the powerful new platform of cold atoms trapped near nanophotonic systems to extend these limits, enabling a novel quantum material in which atomic spin degrees of freedom, motion and photons strongly couple over long distances. In this system, an atom trapped near a photonic crystal seeds a localized, tunable cavity mode around the atomic position. We find that this effective cavity facilitates interactions with other atoms within the cavity length, in a way that can be made robust against realistic imperfections. Finally, we show that such phenomena should be accessible using one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides in which coupling to atoms has already been experimentally demonstrated.

Gain of function of membrane receptor was a good strategy exploited by cancer cells to benefit own growth and survival. Overexpression of HER2 has been found to serve as a target for developing ...trastuzumab to treat 20-25% of breast cancer. However, little or none of the other membrane receptor was found to be useful as a potential target for breast cancer treatment since then. Here, we showed that amplified signaling of interleukin-17 receptor B (IL-17RB) and its ligand IL-17B promoted tumorigenicity in breast cancer cells and impeded acinus formation in immortalized normal mammary epithelial cells. External signal transmitted through IL-17RB activated nuclear factor-κB to upregulate antiapoptotic factor Bcl-2 and induced etoposide resistance. Elevated expression of IL-17RB had a stronger correlation with poor prognosis than HER2 in breast cancer patients. Interestingly, breast cancer patients with high expression of IL-17RB and HER2 had the shortest survival rate. Depletion of IL-17RB in trastuzumab-resistant breast cancer cells significantly reduced their tumorigenic activity, suggesting that IL-17RB and HER2 have an independent role in breast carcinogenesis. Furthermore, treatment with antibodies specifically against IL-17RB or IL-17B effectively attenuated tumorigenicity of breast cancer cells. These results suggest that the amplified IL-17RB/IL-17B signaling pathways may serve as a therapeutic target for developing treatment to manage IL-17RB-associated breast cancer.

Summary
Background Nationwide data on the epidemiology of dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) were limited.
Objectives This study was to estimate the incidence, occurrence of cancer and ...mortality of DM and PM in Taiwan.
Methods Both the register of critical illness of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Dataset and the National Death Registry of Taiwan were used to calculate estimates of the incidence, cancer association, and mortality of DM and PM between 2003 and 2007.
Results A total of 803 DM and 500 PM cases were identified between 2003 and 2007. Mean age at diagnosis was 44·0 ± 18·3 years for DM and 49·2 ± 15·9 years for PM. The overall annual incidences of DM and PM were 7·1 (95% CI 6·6–7·6) and 4·4 (95% CI 4·0–4·8) cases per million population. The incidence of both DM and PM increased with age and reached a peak at age 50–59 years. One hundred and eleven (13·8%) patients with DM and 31 (6·2%) patients with PM had cancers. The diagnosis of most cancers was made after the diagnoses of DM (n = 71; 64·0%) and PM (n = 21; 67·7%). Overall, the standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for cancer were 5·36 (4·12–6·87) and 1·80 (1·10–2·79) among patients with DM and PM; however, during the first year, SIRs for cancer were 24·55 (95% CI 18·62–31·79) and 9·17 (95% CI 14·82–15·93) in patients with DM and PM, respectively. The most common types of cancer were nasopharyngeal cancer for men and breast cancer for women. Patients with DM and PM had standardized mortality ratios of 7·68 (6·41–9·01) and 5·29 (4·28–6·48).
Conclusion This study reports robust estimates of important aspects of the epidemiology of both DM and PM in Taiwan. This highlights the rarity of these diseases, and their associated cancer risks and increased mortality.

Normal anterior pituitary function is essential for fertility. Release from the gland of the reproductive hormones luteinising hormone and follicle‐stimulating hormone is regulated primarily by ...hypothalamically‐derived gonadotrophin‐releasing hormone (GnRH), although other releasing factors (RF) have been postulated to exist. Using a bioinformatic approach, we have identified a novel peptide, phoenixin, that regulates pituitary gonadotrophin secretion by modulating the expression of the GnRH receptor, an action with physiologically relevant consequences. Compromise of phoenixin in vivo using small interfering RNA resulted in the delayed appearance of oestrus and a reduction in GnRH receptor expression in the pituitary. Phoenixin may represent a new class of hypothalamically‐derived pituitary priming factors that sensitise the pituitary to the action of other RFs, rather than directly stimulating the fusion of secretary vesicles to pituitary membranes.

The integration of nanophotonics and atomic physics has been a long-sought goal that would open new frontiers for optical physics, including novel quantum transport and many-body phenomena with ...photon-mediated atomic interactions. Reaching this goal requires surmounting diverse challenges in nanofabrication and atomic manipulation. Here we report the development of a novel integrated optical circuit with a photonic crystal capable of both localizing and interfacing atoms with guided photons. Optical bands of a photonic crystal waveguide are aligned with selected atomic transitions. From reflection spectra measured with average atom number N=1.1+/-0.4, we infer that atoms are localized within the waveguide by optical dipole forces. The fraction of single-atom radiative decay into the waveguide is Γ1D/Γ'≃(0.32±0.08), where Γ1D is the rate of emission into the guided mode and Γ' is the decay rate into all other channels. Γ1D/Γ' is unprecedented in all current atom-photon interfaces.
Summary
Background
Although ultraviolet (UV) phototherapy is an effective treatment for vitiligo, its effect on the risk of skin cancer remains controversial.
Aim
To investigate the association ...between UV phototherapy and skin cancer risk in patients with vitiligo.
Methods
A systematic review was performed for studies published before 5 May 2021 in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases. The primary outcome was the association of UV phototherapy with the risk of skin cancer in patients with vitiligo. A meta‐analysis with a random‐effects model was conducted.
Results
Five retrospective cohort studies covering a total of 228 607 patients with vitiligo (110 038 who had been treated with UV phototherapy and 118 569 patients who had not) were included in the meta‐analysis. The risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer Mantel–Haenszel risk ratio (MHRR) = 0.95; 95% CI 0.44–2.05 and melanoma (MHRR = 1.11; 95% CI 0.33–3.82) did not significantly increase after phototherapy in patients with vitiligo. In the subgroup analysis, we also found no significant association between phototherapy with narrowband UVB phototherapy specifically and risk of skin cancer in patients with vitiligo. There was no significant difference in risk of skin cancer between patients from Europe and those from East Asia and the risk was not affected by the number of narrowband UVB phototherapy sessions.
Conclusions
The findings of this systematic review and meta‐analysis suggest that UV phototherapy is a safe treatment for vitiligo with no significant risk of skin cancer.
This systematic review and meta‐analysis demonstrates that patients with vitiligo do not have a significantly increased risk of skin cancer after ultraviolet phototherapy compared with those not receiving phototherapy.

In this paper, the consensus tracking control problem of second-order multiagent systems with unknown nonlinear dynamics, immeasurable states, and disturbances is investigated. The nonlinear dynamics ...in multiagent systems do not satisfy the matched condition. In this paper, fuzzy logic system is introduced to approximate the unknown nonlinear dynamics, and adaptive high-gain observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states. Based on backstepping approach and Lyapunov theory, a new adaptive fuzzy distributed controller is proposed for each agent only using the information of itself and its neighbors. Then the consensus tracking is achieved under the designed distributed controller. Moreover, it is proved that all the signals in the multiagent systems are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded, and the consensus tracking error converges to a small neighborhood of the origin that can be designed as small as possible. Finally, the simulation result illustrates the effectiveness of the designed controller.
