Upper gastrointestinal cancers (including oesophageal cancer and gastric cancer) are the most common cancers worldwide. Artificial intelligence platforms using deep learning algorithms have made ...remarkable progress in medical imaging but their application in upper gastrointestinal cancers has been limited. We aimed to develop and validate the Gastrointestinal Artificial Intelligence Diagnostic System (GRAIDS) for the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal cancers through analysis of imaging data from clinical endoscopies.
This multicentre, case-control, diagnostic study was done in six hospitals of different tiers (ie, municipal, provincial, and national) in China. The images of consecutive participants, aged 18 years or older, who had not had a previous endoscopy were retrieved from all participating hospitals. All patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer lesions (including oesophageal cancer and gastric cancer) that were histologically proven malignancies were eligible for this study. Only images with standard white light were deemed eligible. The images from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were randomly assigned (8:1:1) to the training and intrinsic verification datasets for developing GRAIDS, and the internal validation dataset for evaluating the performance of GRAIDS. Its diagnostic performance was evaluated using an internal and prospective validation set from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (a national hospital) and additional external validation sets from five primary care hospitals. The performance of GRAIDS was also compared with endoscopists with three degrees of expertise: expert, competent, and trainee. The diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of GRAIDS and endoscopists for the identification of cancerous lesions were evaluated by calculating the 95% CIs using the Clopper-Pearson method.
1 036 496 endoscopy images from 84 424 individuals were used to develop and test GRAIDS. The diagnostic accuracy in identifying upper gastrointestinal cancers was 0·955 (95% CI 0·952–0·957) in the internal validation set, 0·927 (0·925–0·929) in the prospective set, and ranged from 0·915 (0·913–0·917) to 0·977 (0·977–0·978) in the five external validation sets. GRAIDS achieved diagnostic sensitivity similar to that of the expert endoscopist (0·942 95% CI 0·924–0·957 vs 0·945 0·927–0·959; p=0·692) and superior sensitivity compared with competent (0·858 0·832–0·880, p<0·0001) and trainee (0·722 0·691–0·752, p<0·0001) endoscopists. The positive predictive value was 0·814 (95% CI 0·788–0·838) for GRAIDS, 0·932 (0·913–0·948) for the expert endoscopist, 0·974 (0·960–0·984) for the competent endoscopist, and 0·824 (0·795–0·850) for the trainee endoscopist. The negative predictive value was 0·978 (95% CI 0·971–0·984) for GRAIDS, 0·980 (0·974–0·985) for the expert endoscopist, 0·951 (0·942–0·959) for the competent endoscopist, and 0·904 (0·893–0·916) for the trainee endoscopist.
GRAIDS achieved high diagnostic accuracy in detecting upper gastrointestinal cancers, with sensitivity similar to that of expert endoscopists and was superior to that of non-expert endoscopists. This system could assist community-based hospitals in improving their effectiveness in upper gastrointestinal cancer diagnoses.

The facultative anaerobe Salmonella strain VNP20009 selectively colonizes into tumors following systemic injection due to its preference for the hypoxia in the tumor cores. However, the phase 1 ...clinical trial of VNP20009 has been terminated mainly due to its weak antitumor effects and exhibition of dose-dependent toxicity. Here, we leveraged the advantages of VNP20009 biotherapy together with polydopamine-mediated photothermal therapy in order to enhance the antitumor efficacy toward malignant melanoma. VNP20009 was coated with polydopamine via oxidation and self-polymerization, which was then injected into tumor-bearing mice via the tail vein. Polydopamine-coated VNP20009 targeted hypoxic areas of the solid tumors, and near-infrared laser irradiation of the tumors induced heating due to polydopamine. This combined approach eliminated the tumors without relapse or metastasis with only one injection and laser irradiation. More importantly, we found both VNP and pDA potentiate the therapeutic ability of each other, resulting in a superior anticancer effect.

Kaolinite clay obtained from Longyan, China was investigated to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater. Thus, the present study includes the adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) in ...aqueous solution on kaolinite clay through the process of adsorption under various conditions (with variable concentration of metal ion, amount of clay, pH and mixing time). Increasing pH favours the removal of metal ions till they are precipitated as the insoluble hydroxides. The uptake is rapid with maximum adsorption being observed within 30
min for Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II). In addition, the results obtained from adsorption isotherm indicated that these data can be better fitted with the Freundlich equation than the Langmuir equation. Furthermore, the XRD patterns confirmed that this kaolinite clay sample is mainly a mixture of kaolinite and illite clays. The SEM images of samples showed irregular surface morphology. Finally, this kaolinite clay was used for removing metal ions from real wastewater such as Pb(II), where its concentration was reduced from 160.00 to 8.00
mg/L.

Hierarchical chrysanthemum-like CuCo2O4-CuO composites were successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method after calcination at 500 °C. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), we found that not only the morphology (from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional) but also the crystalline structure (Cu0 + Cu2O + CoOx → CuO + CuCo2O4) of the samples could be tuned by the calcination temperature. The existed interfaces of CuCo2O4-CuCo2O4, CuCo2O4-CuO, and CuO-CuO played a key role on the attenuation of electromagnetic waves. The effective absorption frequency bandwidth is up to 4.02 GHz with a matched thickness of 2.8 mm. The CuCo2O4-CuO/paraffin composites can even exhibit bigger effective frequency bandwidth (from 4.02 to 4.65 GHz) if we turn the incident angle of electromagnetic (EM) wave to a proper value (i.e., 45°). We believe that the hierarchical chrysanthemum-like CuCo2O4-CuO composites can be a good candidate for the high-performance Co-based spinel microwave absorbers.

Abstract
Background
Fenofibrate is commonly used in the treatment of dyslipidemia. Fenofibrate is related to mild aminotransferase elevations and in some cases severe chronic injury such as fibrosis ...or cirrhosis, resulting in liver transplantation or death. The latency of disease has been reported to range between weeks to years.
Case presentation
A 63 years old male with hypertriglyceridemia developed symptoms of fatigue and anorexia 48 h after taking fenofibrate for the first time. The patient’s aminotransferase level was more than 10 times ULN. Immediately, fenofibrate was discontinued and aminotransferase level returned to normal 23 days later. To assess causality between the drug and liver damage, the standardized Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method (RUCAM) was used. The patient's RUCAM score was 7, which fell in the group of “probable”. Eight months later, follow-up examination suggested the liver function was normal.
Conclusions
Weakness, fatigue and abnormal liver function during fenofibrate therapy should be closely monitored and trigger prompt withdrawal if these symptoms occur.

Sex-related genes play a crucial role in gonadal differentiation into testes or ovaries. However, the genetic control of gonadal differentiation in Muscovy ducks remains unknown. Therefore, the ...objective of our study was to screen new candidate genes associated with ovarian and testicular development.
In this study, 24 males before gonadal differentiation (MB), 24 females before gonadal differentiation (FB), 24 males after gonadal differentiation (MA) and 24 females after gonadal differentiation (FA) were selected from Putian Muscovy ducks, forming 4 groups. RNA-Seq revealed 101.76 Gb of clean reads and 2800 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 46 in MB vs FB, 609 in MA vs FA, 1027 in FA vs FB, and 1118 in MA vs MB. A total of 146 signalling pathways were enriched by KEGG analysis, among which 20, 108, 108 and 116 signalling pathways were obtained in MB vs FB, MA vs MB, MA vs FA and FA vs FB, respectively. In further GO and KEGG analyses, a total of 21 candidate genes related to gonad differentiation and development in Muscovy ducks were screened. Among these, 9 genes were involved in the differentiation and development of the testes, and 12 genes were involved in the differentiation and development of the ovaries. In addition, RNA-Seq data revealed 2744 novel genes.
RNA-Seq data revealed 21 genes related to gonadal differentiation and development in Muscovy ducks. We further identified 12 genes, namely, WNT5B, HTRA3, RSPO3, BMP3, HNRNPK, NIPBL, CREB3L4, DKK3, UBE2R2, UBPL3KCMF1, ANXA2, and OSR1, involved in the differentiation and development of ovaries. Moreover, 9 genes, namely, TTN, ATP5A1, DMRT1, DMRT3, AMH, MAP3K1, PIK3R1, AGT and ADAMTSL1, were related to the differentiation and development of testes. Moreover, after gonadal differentiation, DMRT3, AMH, PIK3R1, ADAMTSL1, AGT and TTN were specifically highly expressed in males. WNT5B, ANXA2 and OSR1 were specifically highly expressed in females. These results provide valuable information for studies on the sex control of Muscovy ducks and reveal novel candidate genes for the differentiation and development of testes and ovaries.

In this study, we aimed to enhance the treatment protocols and help understand the harm caused by the accidental ingestion of magnetic beads by children.
Data were collected from 72 children with ...multiple gastrointestinal perforations or gastrointestinal obstructions. The 72 pediatric patients were divided into a perforation and a non-perforation group. The data collected for the analysis included the gender, age, medical history, place of residence (rural or urban), and symptoms along with the educational background of the caregiver, the location and quantity of any foreign bodies discovered during the procedure, whether perforation was confirmed during the procedure, and the number of times magnetic beads had been accidentally ingested.
The accuracy rate of preoperative gastrointestinal perforation diagnosis via ultrasound was 71%, while that of the upright abdominal X-ray method was only 46%. In terms of symptoms, the risk of perforation was 13.844 and 12.703 times greater in pediatric patients who experienced vomiting and abdominal pain with vomiting and abdominal distension, respectively, compared to patients in an asymptomatic state. There were no statistical differences between the perforation and the non-perforation groups in terms of age, gender, medical history, and the number of magnetic beads ingested (P > 0.05); however, there were statistical differences in terms of white blood cell count (P = 0.048) and c-reactive protein levels (P = 0.033). A total of 56% of cases underwent a laparotomy along with perforation repair and 19% underwent gastroscopy along with laparotomy. All pediatric patients recovered without complications following surgery.
Abdominal ultrasonography and/or upright abdominal X-ray analyses should be carried out as soon as possible in case of suspicion of accidental ingestion of magnetic beads by children. In most cases, immediate surgical intervention is required. Given the serious consequences of ingesting this type of foreign body, it is essential to inform parents and/or caregivers about the importance of preventing young children from using such products.
Modified kaolinite clay with 25% (w/w) aluminium sulphate and unmodified kaolin were investigated as adsorbents to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The results show that amount of Pb(II) adsorbed ...onto modified kaolin (20
mg/g) was more than 4.5-fold than that adsorbed onto unmodified kaolin (4.2
mg/g) under the optimized condition. In addition, the linear Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to describe equilibrium isotherm. It is observed that the data from both adsorbents fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm. The kinetic adsorption of modified and unmodified kaolinite clay fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, both modified and unmodified kaolinite clay were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally, both modified and unmodified kaolinite clay were used to remove metal ions from real wastewater, and results show that higher amount of Pb(II) (the concentration reduced from 178 to 27.5
mg/L) and other metal ions were removed by modified kaolinite clay compared with using unmodified adsorbent (the concentration reduced from 178 to 168
mg/L).

The present work involves the investigation of coupling effects of gamma irradiation and absorbed moisture on silicone foam. Compression stress-strain test, creep test, differential scanning ...calorimetry (DSC) and swelling test were performed to analyze the properties of pristine and dewatered samples irradiated by 60Co gamma ray. Changes in the compression stress, creep elongation, melting temperature, melting enthalpy and the average molecular weight between cross-links of the dewatered samples are much more obvious than that of the pristine ones. The possible mechanism was investigated by computational study with analog molecules. It suggests that the absorbed moisture and its radiolysis species (H·/HO·) would consume part of the macromolecular radicals generated by gamma irradiation, which hinders the crosslinking reactions. This should be the main mechanism for the coupling effects of moisture and irradiation at room temperature.

Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) using sequencing of fetal cellfree DNA from maternal plasma has enabled accurate prenatal diagnosis of aneuploidy and become increasingly accepted in clinical ...practice. We investigated whether NIPT using semiconductor sequencing platform (SSP) could reliably detect subchromosomal deletions/duplications in women carrying high-risk fetuses. We first showed that increasing concentration of abnormal DNA and sequencing depth improved detection. Subsequently, we analyzed plasma from 1,456 pregnant women to develop a method for estimating fetal DNA concentration based on the size distribution of DNA fragments. Finally, we collected plasma from 1,476 pregnant women with fetal structural abnormalities detected on ultrasound who also underwent an invasive diagnostic procedure. We used SSP of maternal plasma DNA to detect subchromosomal abnormalities and validated our results with array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH). With 3.5 million reads, SSP detected 56 of 78 (71.8%) subchromosomal abnormalities detected by aCGH. With increased sequencing depth up to 10 million reads and restriction of the size of abnormalities to more than 1Mb, sensitivity improved to 69 of 73 (94.5%). Of 55 false-positive samples, 35 were caused by deletions/duplications present in maternal DNA, indicating the necessity of a validation test to exclude maternal karyotype abnormalities. This study shows that detection of fetal subchromosomal abnormalities is a viable extension of NIPT based on SSP. Although we focused on the application of cell-free DNA sequencing for NIPT, we believe that this method has broader applications for genetic diagnosis, such as analysis of circulating tumor DNA for detection of cancer.
