The mitochondrion is essential for energy metabolism and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In intact cells, respiratory mitochondria exhibit spontaneous "superoxide flashes", the quantal ...ROS-producing events consequential to transient mitochondrial permeability transition (tMPT). Here we perform the first in vivo imaging of mitochondrial superoxide flashes and tMPT activity in living mice expressing the superoxide biosensor mt-cpYFP, and demonstrate their coupling to whole-body glucose metabolism. Robust tMPT/superoxide flash activity occurred in skeletal muscle and sciatic nerve of anesthetized transgenic mice. In skeletal muscle, imaging tMPT/superoxide flashes revealed labyrinthine three-dimensional networks of mitochondria that operate synchronously. The tMPT/ superoxide flash activity surged in response to systemic glucose challenge or insulin stimulation, in an apparently frequency-modulated manner and involving also a shift in the gating mode of tMPT. Thus, in vivo imaging of tMPT- dependent mitochondrial ROS signals and the discovery of the metabolism-tMPT-superoxide flash coupling mark important technological and conceptual advances for the study of mitochondrial function and ROS signaling in health and disease.

A new tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopis estuariensis Zhang, Feng & Yu, sp. nov. was found in the estuary of Yangtze River, China. It was most abundant in September. Its arenaceous lorica is ...cylindro-conical in shape, (120-180)μm x (50-75)pm in size, agglutinated with mineral particles, and open at both ends. Two characters distinguish it from others: the unique lateral flattened posterior portion with a vertical aboral opening and wider oral diameter. It occurred in water with surface temperature of 14-27℃ and surface salinity of 3.9‰-29.8‰.
Background: How to evaluate the quality of donation after cardiac transplantation in China. Hence, the aim of this study was to develop kidneys before DCD. death (DCD) kidneys has become a critical ...problem in kidney a simple donor risk score model to evaluate the quality of DCD Methods: A total of 543 qualified kidneys were randomized in a 2:1 manner to create the development and validation cohorts. The donor variables in the development cohort were considered as candidate univariate predictors of delayed graft function (DGF). Multivariate logistic regression was then used to identify independent predictors of DGF with P 〈 0.05. Date from validation cohort were used to validate the donor scoring model. Results: Based on the odds ratios, eight identified variables were assigned a weighted integer; the sum of the integer was the total risk score for each kidney. The donor risk score, ranging from 0 to 28, demonstrated good discriminative power with a C-statistic of 0.790. Similar results were obtained from validation cohort with C-statistic of 0.783. Based on the obtained frequencies of DGF in relation to different risk scores, we formed tour risk categories of increasing severity (scores 04, 5 9, 10-14, and 15 28). Conclusions: The scoring model might be a good noninvasive tool for assessing the quality of DCD kidneys before donation and potentially useful for physicians to make optimal decisions about donor organ offers.
The effects of Ni addition on solidification micro structure and tensile properties of Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),X-ray ...diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscope(EDS) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Results show that with 3 at%Ni addition, the as-cast micro structure is mainly composed of fine lamellar colonies(~50 μm),γ grains and Ni-ridied τ_3 phase. After heat treatment at 1380℃,the Ni-containing alloy is characterized by fine fully lamellar micro structure(~90 μm).The heat-treated Ni-containing specimen exhibits superior room temperature tensile properties than other specimens. The tensile properties are discussed in light of the microstructure evolution and role of Ni-riched τ_3 phase.

Studies estimating eye movements have demonstrated that non-human primates have fixation patterns similar to humans at the first sight of a picture. In the current study, three sets of pictures ...containing monkeys, humans or both were presented to rhesus monkeys and humans. The eye movements on these pictures by the two species were recorded using a Tobii eye-tracking system. We found that monkeys paid more attention to the head and body in pictures containing monkeys, whereas both monkeys and humans paid more attention to the head in pictures containing humans. The humans always concentrated on the eyes and head in all the pictures, indicating the social role of facial cues in society.Although humans paid more attention to the hands than monkeys, both monkeys and humans were interested in the hands and what was being done with them in the pictures. This may suggest the importance and necessity of hands for survival. Finally, monkeys scored lower in eye-tracking when fixating on the pictures,as if they were less interested in looking at the screen than humans. The locations of fixation in monkeys may provide insight into the role of eye movements in an evolutionary context.

AIM: To measure the common bile duct(CBD) diameter by magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP) in a large asymptomatic population and analyze its some affecting factors.METHODS: This study ...included 862 asymptomatic subjects who underwent MRCP. The CBD diameter was measured at its widest visible portion on regular endexpiration MRCP for all subjects. Among these 862 subjects, 221 volunteers also underwent end-inspiration MRCP to study the effect of respiration on the CBD diameter. The age, sex, respiration, body length, body weight, body mass index(BMI), portal vein diameter(PVD), length of the extrahepatic duct and CBD, cystic junction radial orientation and location were recorded. The subjects were divided into 7 groups according to age. All of the above factors were compared with the CBD diameter on end-expiration MRCP.RESULTS: Among the 862 subjects, the CBD diameter was 4.13 ± 1.11 mm(range, 1.76-9.45 mm) and was correlated with age(r = 0.484; P < 0.05), with a dilation of 0.033 mm per year. The upper limit of the 95% reference range was 5.95 mm, resulting in a reasonable upper limit of 6 mm for the asymptomatic population. Respiration and other factors, including sex, body length, body weight, BMI, PVD, length of the extrahepatic duct and CBD, cystic junction radia orientation and location, were not related to the CBD diameter.CONCLUSION: We established a reference range for the CBD diameter on MRCP for an asymptomatic population. The CBD diameter is correlated with age. Respiration did not affect the non-dilated CBD diameter.
Owing to their low density and attractive high-temperature properties, gamma titanium aluminide alloys (TiAI alloys, hereafter) have significant potential application in the aerospace and automobile ...industries, in which these materials may replace the heavier nickel-based superalloys at service temperatures of 600 - 900℃. Investment casting of TiAI alloys has become the most promising cost-effective technique for the manufacturing of TiAI components. Ceramic moulds are fundamental to fabricating the TiAI casting components. In the present work, ceramic mould with a zirconia primary coat was designed and fabricated successfully. Investment casting of TiAI blades and tensile test of specimens was carried out to verify the correctness and feasibility of the proposed method. The tensile test results indicate that, at room temperature, the tensile strength and the elongation are about 450 MPa and 0.8%, respectively. At 700℃, the tensile strength decreases to about 410 MPa and the elongation increases to 2.7%. Microstructure and mechanical properties of investment cast TiAl alloy are discussed.
Marine magnetotactic bacteria were collected from the intertidal sediments of Yuehu Lake(China), where their abundance reached 103–104 ind./cm3. Diverse morphotypes of magnetotactic bacteria were ...observed, including cocci and oval, vibrio-, spirillum-, rod-, elliptical-, handle- and bar-shaped forms. The magnetococci were the most abundant, and had flagella arranged in parallel within a bundle. The majority of magnetosomes were arranged in one, two or multiple chains, although irregular arrangements were also evident. All the results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) analysis show that magnetosome crystals were composed of Fe3O4, and their morphology was specific to particular cell morphotypes. By the 16 S r RNA gene sequence analysis, we found fourteen operational taxonomic units(OTUs) which were related to magnetotactic bacteria. Among these, thirteen belonged to the Alphaproteobacteria and one to the Gammaproteobacteria.Compared with known axenic and uncultured marine magnetotactic bacteria, the 16 S r RNA gene sequences of most magnetotactic bacteria collected from the Yuehu Lake exhibited sequence identities ranging from 90.1% to96.2%(〈97%). The results indicate that microbial communities containing previously unidentified magnetotactic bacteria occur in the Yuehu Lake.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia type 18 (HSP18) is a complicated form ofautosomal recessive HSP characterized by progressive weakness and spasticity of the lower extremities, dysarthria, and cognitive ...decline. In the year 2011,HSP18,also known as Spastic Paraplegia 18 (SPG18),was firstly identified due to a candidate gene endoplasmic reticulum lipid raft-associated protein 2 (ERLIN2) on chromosome 8pl 1.2 in one Saudis family.During the past 5 years, another two families with SPG18 due to ERLIN2 mutations have been reported presenting with complicated phenotype. Here,we reported a patient born in a nonconsanguineous family who possessed an autosomal recessive pure form of HSP owing to novel mutations in ERLIN2.Patient was characterized by late-onset spasticity of lower extremities without significant speech involvement or cognitive disability.
A wafer-scale colloidal monolayer consisting of SiO2 spheres is fabricated by a method combining spin coating and thermal treatment for the first time. Moreover, a new cellular automaton model ...describing the self-assembly process of the colloidal monolayer is introduced. Rather than simulate molecular self-assembly to establish the most energetically favored position, we reconstruct the self-assembly of the colloidal monolayer by adjusting several simple transition rules of a cellular automaton. This model captures the main self-assembly characteristics of SiO2 spheres, including experimental processing time, morphology, and some statistics. It possesses the advantage of less calculation and higher efficiency, paving a new way to simulate a mesoscopic system.
