High-dimensional data sets generated by high-throughput technologies, such as DNA microarray, are often the outputs of complex networked systems driven by hidden regulatory signals. Traditional ...statistical methods for computing low-dimensional or hidden representations of these data sets, such as principal component analysis and independent component analysis, ignore the underlying network structures and provide decompositions based purely on a priori statistical constraints on the computed component signals. The resulting decomposition thus provides a phenomenological model for the observed data and does not necessarily contain physically or biologically meaningful signals. Here, we develop a method, called network component analysis, for uncovering hidden regulatory signals from outputs of networked systems, when only a partial knowledge of the underlying network topology is available. The a priori network structure information is first tested for compliance with a set of identifiability criteria. For networks that satisfy the criteria, the signals from the regulatory nodes and their strengths of influence on each output node can be faithfully reconstructed. This method is first validated experimentally by using the absorbance spectra of a network of various hemoglobin species. The method is then applied to microarray data generated from yeast Saccharamyces cerevisiae and the activities of various transcription factors during cell cycle are reconstructed by using recently discovered connectivity information for the underlying transcriptional regulatory networks.

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma (2γ) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure ...the 2γ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to ∼100 keV and half-lives as short as ∼10 ms. To describe the clinical outcome and quality of life up to 50 years after surgical atrial septal defect (ASD) closure at young age. Primary outcome is defined as MACE (all-cause mortality, cardiac ...re-interventions, ischemic stroke, endocarditis, heart failure and symptomatic arrhythmia).
Single-center, longitudinal cohort-study evaluating 135 consecutive patients who underwent ASD-closure before the age of 15 years between 1968 and 1980. Participants were invited for extensive cardiac evaluation and assessment of quality-of-life every 10 years.
Eighty patients (86%) of 93 eligible survivors were included in this study (mean age 52 ± 5 years (range 41-63), 40% male). Median follow-up since surgery was 45 years (range 40-51). Cumulative survival after 50 years was 86% and comparable to the normal Dutch population. Cumulative event-free survival after 45 and 50-years was 59% and 46% respectively (re-intervention in 6, symptomatic arrhythmia in 25, and pacemaker implantation in 10 patients). Right ventricular ejection fraction on CMR was diminished in 6%. Exercise capacity was normal in 77%. There was no pulmonary hypertension. NT-proBNP was elevated in 61%. Quality of life was comparable with the general population. No predictors for late events were identified.
Long-term survival after surgical ASD-closure in childhood is good and not statistically different at 50 years compared to the normal Dutch population. Re-intervention rate is low, there is no pulmonary hypertension. Right ventricular function was diminished in 6%, exercise capacity was good and stable over time with quality of life comparable to the general population. However, supraventricular tachycardia is common.

A sequence of low-energy levels in Ge327846 has been identified with spins and parity of 2+, 3+, 4+, 5+, and 6+. Decays within this band proceed strictly through ΔJ=1 transitions, unlike similar ...sequences in neighboring Ge and Se nuclei. Above the 2+ level, members of this sequence do not decay into the ground-state band. Moreover, the energy staggering of this sequence has the phase that would be expected for a γ-rigid structure. The energies and branching ratios of many of the levels are described well by shell-model calculations. However, the calculated reduced transition probabilities for the ΔJ=2 in-band transitions imply that they should have been observed, in contradiction with the experiment. Within the calculations of Davydov, Filippov, and Rostovsky for rigid-triaxial rotors with γ=30°, there are sequences of higher-spin levels connected by strong ΔJ=1 transitions which decay in the same manner as those observed experimentally, yet are calculated at too high an excitation energy.

New sideband partners of the yrast bands built on the pi(h11/2)nu(h11/2) configuration were identified in 55Cs, 57La, and 61Pm N = 75 isotones of 134Pr. These bands form with 134Pr unique ...doublet-band systematics suggesting a common basis. Aplanar solutions of 3D tilted axis cranking calculations for triaxial shapes define left- and right-handed chiral systems out of the three angular momenta provided by the valence particles and the core rotation, which leads to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the doublet bands. Small energy differences between the doublet bands suggest collective chiral vibrations.
