Inthispaper,weintroduceanon-localPDE-ODEtrafficmodeldevotedtothedescriptionof a 1-to-1 junction with buffer. We present an existence result in the free flow case as well as a numerical method to ...approximate weak solutions in the general case. In addition, we show a maximum principle which is uniform in the non-local interaction range. Further, we exploit the limit models as the support of the kernel tends to zero and to infinity. We compare them with other already existing models for traffic and production flow and present numerical examples.
A superconducting flux qubit can be manipulated by a fast modification of its potential, with a rapid transition from a double well to a single well shape, and coming back to the initial condition. ...This mechanism is based on a non-trivial quantum phenomenon, involving "partial" Landau-Zener transitions, coherent evolution in an harmonic potential and quantum interference. The study of this system enables a deep insight in decoherence mechanisms typical of superconducting qubits. Moreover, this procedure allows quantum operations with extreme high speeds, not possible with other standard manipulations. We present the experimental observation of coherent oscillations showing tunable frequencies with a 65 GHz top value.
•The authors develop a tool able to assist engineers during the most repetitive tender phases.•The tool’s aim is saving time and bring strategic advantage to the adopting companies.•It allows the ...semi-automatic treatment of tender’s large technical documentation.•The methodology is tested in the industrial setting of a leading train manufacturer.•The test shows a large performance increase compared to previously adopted solutions.
Tenders or technical terms contain a large quantity of both technical, legal, managerial information mixed in a nested and complex net of relationships. Extracting technical and design information from a document whose aim is both legal and technical, and that is written using several specific jargons, is not a trivial task: the purpose of the research is to try to detect, extract, split and assign information from the text of a tender in an automatic way. It means being able to understand technical and legal terms and organize them in multiple ways: according to product structure, internal organisational structure, etc. The focus is in providing a handy tool that could speed up and facilitate human analysis and allow tackling also the process of transforming customer’s requirements into design specifications. The approach chosen to overcome the various issues is to support state-of-the-art Computational Linguistic tools with a wide Knowledge Base. The latter has been constructed both manually and automatically and comprises not only keywords but also concepts, relationships and regular expressions. The implementation of the methodology has been carried out during a project for AnsaldoBreda S.p.A. (now Hitachi Rail Europe). A case study about the tender for a high-speed train has been included to show the functioning and output of the entire software system.

We present a fast spectrometer working in the 0.7–4.8 THz range. Broadband radiation from a blackbody source is focused first on a rotating silicon wafer, whose surface was patterned with 18 metal ...band-pass filters, then on the sample under test and finally is detected by a superconducting microbolometer with microsecond time constant. The bolometer sensor is coupled to a spiral antenna whose frequency band matches the spectral range of the filters. The spectral resolution is set by the filters quality factor of about 3. A dynamic range of 100 and a S/N ratio of 20 are achieved by integrating for less than 10 second. The detector can operate up to 6 K in a closed-cycle cooler, hence making the present apparatus suitable for building up a simple terahertz video-rate spectrometer.

We present a non-local version of a scalar balance law modeling traffic flow with on-ramps and off-ramps. The source term is used to describe the traffic flow over the on-ramp and off-ramps. We ...approximate the problem using an upwind-type numerical scheme and we provide L^\infty and BV estimates for the sequence of approximate solutions. Together with a discrete entropy inequality, we also show the well-posedness of the considered class of scalar balance laws. Some numerical simulations illustrate the behaviour of solutions in sample cases.
