The interest in combining radiation therapy (RT) with immunotherapy is increasing. We investigated the significance of lymphopenia in patients receiving immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer ...(NSCLC), and the factors associated with treatment-related lymphopenia, with particular emphasis on RT.
In this retrospective single institution study, 268 patients with advanced NSCLC received immunotherapy, of whom 146 received RT. Lymphopenia was defined as an absolute lymphocyte count <1000 cells/mm.
Patients were divided into 2 groups depending on the presence of peri-immunotherapy lymphopenia at the start of immunotherapy or during immunotherapy.
At median 6.4 months of follow-up, patients with peri-immunotherapy lymphopenia (n = 146; 54.5%) showed significantly poorer progression-free survival (PFS) (median PFS: 2.2 vs 5.9 months, P < .001) and overall survival (OS) (median OS: 5.7 vs 12.1 months, P < .001). On multivariate analysis, peri-immunotherapy lymphopenia remained a significant prognostic factor for both PFS and OS. RT significantly increased peri-immunotherapy lymphopenia with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.91 (P = .025). Factors associated with the development of RT-associated lymphopenia included multiple courses (OR, 3.78; P < .001), multiple irradiated sites (OR, 4.77; P = .018), and higher dose (≥50 Gy) (OR, 3.75; P = .004). Conversely, stereotactic body RT/radiosurgery reduced the risk (OR 0.21; P = .002).
Lymphopenia was indicative of poor prognosis in NSCLC patients receiving immunotherapy and was significantly associated with more intensive RT. Choosing appropriate RT regimens and techniques may be essential in reducing lymphopenia. Promising results are expected in the era of precision RT.

Myeloid cell leukemia-1 (MCL-1), which belongs to the anti-apoptotic B cell lymphoma-2 family protein, is overexpressed in various cancers and is associated with cell immortality, malignant ...transformation, chemoresistance, and poor prognosis in humans. However, the significance of MCL-1 in canine mammary gland tumors (MGTs) remains unknown. This study aimed to examine MCL-1 expression in normal canine mammary glands and tumors and to assess its correlation with clinical and histologic variables. In total, 111 samples were examined, including 12 normal mammary gland tissues, 51 benign MGTs, and 48 malignant MGTs. Immunohistochemistry revealed that 53% of benign tumors and 75% of malignant tumors exhibited high MCL-1 expression, whereas only 8% of normal mammary glands exhibited high MCL-1 expression. High MCL-1 expression correlated with tumor malignancy (p < 0.001), large tumor size (> 3 cm) (p = 0.005), high Ki-67 expression (p = 0.046), and metastasis (p = 0.027). Survival curve analysis of dogs with malignant MGTs demonstrated a significant association between high MCL-1 expression and shorter median overall survival (p = 0.027) and progression-free survival (p = 0.014). Our study identified MCL-1 as a prognostic factor and potential therapeutic target in canine MGTs.

There are mounting concerns about the adverse effects of social media on the public understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential effects on vaccination coverage. Yet early studies have ...focused on generic social media use and been based on cross-sectional data limiting any causal inferences. This study is among the first to provide causal support for the speculation that social media news use leads to vaccine hesitancy among US citizens. This two-wave survey study was conducted in the US using Qualtrics online panel-based recruitment. We employ mediation and moderated mediation analyses to test our assumptions. The results suggest that using social media to consume news content can translate into vaccine hesitancy by increasing citizens’ skepticism regarding the efficacy of vaccines. However, these effects are contingent upon the news literacy of users, as the effects on vaccine hesitancy are more substantial among those with lower news literacy. The current study recommends to public policymakers and vaccine communication strategists that any attempt to reduce vaccine hesitancy in society should factor in the adverse effects of social media news use that can increase vaccine safety concerns.
This study focuses on improving pre-emptive risk recognition and safety checks to prevent workplace accidents. It underscores improvements by addressing existing research issues, suggesting potential ...enhancements through system development. Work approval procedures and workers’ prior risk awareness, through the confirmation of work safety standards in physically separated work areas, are fundamental methods of preventing serious accidents and creating a safe work environment. A key factor concerning worker safety is recognizing the potential accident risk factors (or hazards) in advance through practical job hazard analysis and consequently take risk-reduction measures in case the safety standards are not met. Despite the crucial significance of pre-awareness of work risks at the majority of construction sites, tools to enhance this awareness are currently limited. Furthermore, real-time detection of work risks and the implementation of risk reduction measures are contingent upon a monitoring environment and a robust safety culture. This study proposed construction worker location-tracking technology that recognizes personal identification (ID). A safety check system based on location tracking combining personal quick response code (QR code) recognition and computer vision technology to automatically identify workers’ personal identities and track their physical location was proposed. A real-time safety check system was implemented to classify automatically whether workers have confirmed hazards and to approve a work process in high-risk workplaces by supervisors. Location-tracking technology with ID recognition performed the following two safety management functions. First, if a construction worker does not pre-check the work risk information before entering the work zone, the geofencing technology automatically classifies workers as those who are not aware of job hazards. Secondly, the safety manager or supervisor entering the on-site work zone possesses the authority to halt work if the work environment fails to meet safety standards and can issue warnings regarding risky situations. Essential functions were validated through a case study involving preliminary testing within the development system. To assess the practical application of the system, virtual simulations were conducted using recorded videos from a construction site to replicate the two essential functions of the system. The system was constructed using an Apache server and Python code, and for testing purposes, the names of the workers were randomized.

Along with surgical decompression of the posterior tibial nerve, complete removal of the causative space-occupying lesion is needed to prevent recurrence.

Changes in media systems, political ...environments, and electoral campaigning demand that these influences, and the communication mediation model, be revised to account for the growing convergence of media and conversation, heightened partisan polarization, and deepening social contentiousness in media politics. We propose a revised communication mediation model that continues to emphasize the centrality of face‐to‐face and online talk in democratic life, while considering how mediational and self‐reflective processes that encourage civic engagement and campaign participation might also erode institutional legitimacy, foster distrust and partisan divergence, disrupting democratic functioning as a consequence of a new communication ecology.

Research on hostile media perception (HMP) has suggested that both news slants and partisan source cues influence individuals’ perception of news bias. Yet, relatively little attention has been paid ...to the possibility that the two message features may interact. Extending the literature on HMP, the present experiment investigates the content-source interaction in the context of President Trump’s policy on immigration, with two audience characteristics as potential moderators: political ideology strength (PIS) and need for cognition (NFC). Results show that (1) the effect of news slants on HMP is greater when the news is from an in-group source and (2) such interaction is more pronounced for those with higher levels of PIS and lower levels of NFC. Implications for our understanding of HMP and for public opinion in an increasingly fragmented and partisan media environment will be discussed.
Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), including acute radiation pneumonitis and chronic radiation-induced lung fibrosis, is the most common side effect of radiation therapy. RILI is a complicated ...process that causes the accumulation, proliferation, and differentiation of fibroblasts and, finally, results in excessive extracellular matrix deposition. Currently, there are no approved treatment options for patients with radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF) partly due to the absence of effective targets. Current research advances include the development of small animal models reflecting modern radiotherapy, an understanding of the molecular basis of RIPF, and the identification of candidate drugs for prevention and treatment. Insights provided by this research have resulted in increased interest in disease progression and prognosis, the development of novel anti-fibrotic agents, and a more targeted approach to the treatment of RIPF.
