Ghrelin, a stomach-derived hormone, induces adiposity when administered to rodents. Because ghrelin receptor is abundantly expressed in adipose tissue, we investigated the role of ghrelin in ...adipocyte biology. We observed ghrelin receptor expression in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and adipocytes. Treatment of preadipocytes with ghrelin induced cellular proliferation and differentiation to mature adipocytes, as well as basal and insulin-stimulated glucose transport, but it inhibited adipocyte apoptosis induced by serum deprivation. Exposure of 3T3-L1 cells to ghrelin caused a rapid activation of MAPKs, especially ERK1/2. Chemical inhibition of MAPK blocked the mitogenic and antiapoptotic effects of ghrelin. Ghrelin also stimulated the insulin receptor substrate-associated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and adipocytes, whereas inhibition of this pathway blocked the effects of ghrelin on cell proliferation, antiapoptosis and glucose uptake. These findings suggest that the direct effects of ghrelin on proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in adipocytes may play a role in regulating fat cell number. These effects may be mediated via activation of the MAPK and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathways.

To investigate cortical brain activity during usual walking, we examined patterns of cortical activation using fNIRS device (NIRSIT®; OBELAB Inc., Seoul, Korea), in patients with neurological injury caused by lower extremity burns.
This cross-sectional study assessed 15 patients with lower extremity burns, 10 patients with upper extremity burns, and 11 healthy controls. We measured walking-related cortical activity using an fNIRS device at baseline and during usual walking.
There was no significant difference between the burns groups in terms of age (43.50 ± 14.08 and 44.67 ± 6.92 years, P = 1.00), pain score of NRS (Numeric rating scale) (5.83 ± 1.19 and 6.67 ± 1.21, P = 0.18) or the mean time since injury (228.50 ± 83.43 and 199.33 ± 68.84 days, P = 0.78). datas of the regions during usual walking in patients with lower extremity burn were insignificantly higher compared with the datas in patient with upper extremity burn (P = 0.302).
The patients with neurological injury due to lower extremity burns significantly rely more on cognitive resources even when performing a usual walking task.

Low survival rate occurs in patients who initially experience a spontaneous return of circulation after cardiac arrest(CA). In this study, we induced asphyxial CA in adult male Sprague-Daley rats, ...maintained their body temperature at 37 ± 0.5°C, and then observed the survival rate during the post-resuscitation phase. We examined neuronal damage in the hippocampus using cresyl violet(CV) and Fluore-Jade B(F-J B) staining, and pro-inflammatory response using ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1(Iba-1), glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α) immunohistochemistry in the hippocampus after asphyxial CA in rats under normothermia. Our results show that the survival rate decreased gradually post-CA(about 63% at 6 hours, 37% at 1 day, and 8% at 2 days post-CA). Rats were sacrificed at these points in time post-CA, and no neuronal damage was found in the hippocampus until 1 day post-CA. However, some neurons in the stratum pyramidale of the CA region in the hippocampus were dead 2 days post-CA. Iba-1 immunoreactive microglia in the CA1 region did not change until 1 day postCA, and they were activated(enlarged cell bodies with short and thicken processes) in all layers 2 days postCA. Meanwhile, GFAP-immunoreactive astrocytes did not change significantly until 2 days post-CA. TNF-α immunoreactivity decreased significantly in neurons of the stratum pyramidale in the CA1 region 6 hours post-CA, decreased gradually until 1 day post-CA, and increased significantly again 2 days post-CA. These findings suggest that low survival rate of normothermic rats in the early period of asphyxia-induced CA is related to increased TNF-α immunoreactivity, but not to neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 region.
One of the major challenges for the practical application of graphene is the large scale synthesis of uniform films with high quality at lower temperature. Here, we demonstrate the use of Ag-plated ...Cu substrates in the synthesis of high-quality graphene films via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane gas at temperatures as low as 900 °C. Various experimental analyses show that the plated Ag diffuses into Cu to form a uniform Cu-Ag alloy that suppresses the formation of multilayer nucleation and decreases the activation energy of precursor formation, leading to a lower synthesis temperature with enhanced monolayer coverage. In addition, we also observed an unusual Ag-assisted abnormal grain growth of Cu into the cube texture with larger grain sizes and reduced grain boundaries, which is believed to provide the homogeneous environment needed for uniform graphene growth.

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) need to have high heat durability for various applications. However, current e-textiles are usually damaged by high-temperature processes. We report ...silk-based e-textiles fabricated by simple pyrolysis with axial stretching that demonstrate high electrical conductivity and thermal durability. The electrical conductivity of the proposed e-textiles was on the order of 103S/cm and the electrical characteristics were maintained even after heating and bending. Furthermore, we prepared e-textiles with various electronic properties, such as semiconducting, superconducting, and light-emitting properties, by depositing ZnO, MoSe2, and NbN onto the commercial silk-based e-textiles using sputtering and evaporation. We introduced a simple method for fabricating silk-based e-textiles with various electronic properties, which are compatible with the current textile industry.

Background
The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinicopathological features of branch intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) and to determine safe criteria for its ...observation. Most clinicians agree that surgical resection is required to treat main duct-type IPMN because of its high malignancy rate. However, no definite treatment guideline (with respect to surgery or observation) has been issued on the management of branch duct type IPMN.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathological data of 138 patients who underwent operations for IPMN between 1993 and 2006 at five institutes in Korea.
Results
Of 138 patients (mean age, 60.6 years; 87 men, 51 women), 76 underwent pancreatoduodenectomy, 39 distal pancreatectomy, 4 total pancreatectomy, and 20 limited pancreatic resection. There were 112 benign cases: 47 adenoma, 63 borderline cases, and 26 malignant cases, with 9 of these being noninvasive and 17 invasive. By univariate analysis, tumor size and the presence of a mural nodule were identified as meaningful predictors of malignancy. By receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, a tumor size of >2 cm was found to be the most valuable predictor of malignancy. When cases were classified according to tumor size and the presence of a mural nodule, the malignancy rate for a tumor ≤2 cm without a mural nodule was 9.2%, for a tumor of ≤2 cm plus a mural nodule was 25%, and for other conditions such as tumor >2 cm, >25%.
Conclusions
Many branch duct IPMNs are malignant. Surgical treatment is recommended, except in cases that are strongly suspected to be benign or cases that present a high operative risk. Observation is only recommended in patients with a tumor size of ≤2 cm without a mural nodule.

Low-temperature plasma (LTP; 3 min/day), negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT; 4 h/day), and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs; 1×10
cells/day) were used as mono- and combination therapy in ...an acute excisional skin wound-healing ICR mouse model. These therapies have been beneficial in treating wounds. We investigated the effectiveness of monotherapy with LTP, NPWT, and MSC and combination therapy with LTP + MSC, LTP + NPWT, NPWT + MSC, and LTP + NPWT + MSC on skin wounds in mice for seven consecutive days. Gene expression, protein expression, and epithelial thickness were analyzed using real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), western blotting, and hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E), respectively. Wound closure was also evaluated. Wound closure was significantly accelerated in monotherapy groups, whereas more accelerated in combination therapy groups. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression was increased in the LTP monotherapy group but decreased in the NPWT, MSC, and combination therapy groups. Expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and type I collagen were increased in the combination therapy groups. Re-epithelialization was also considerably accelerated in combination therapy groups. Our findings suggest that combination therapy with LPT, NPWT, and MSC exert a synergistic effect on wound healing, representing a promising strategy for the treatment of acute wounds.

Malabsorption of levothyroxine (LT4) is a common problem faced in clinical practice. It is usually solved, if there are no complexities including gastrointestinal absorption disorder, by taking ...medicines on an empty stomach and avoiding foods interfering with LT4. Herein we present a rare case of a patient exhibiting malabsorption of LT4 with decreased membranous expression of ileal transporters.
The 22-Year-old female presented with sustained hypothyroid status despite medication of 7.8 μg/kg LT4. Medical history and LT4 absorption test (the absorption rate 8.4%) excluded pseudomalabsorption. No organic gastrointestinal disorder was found in the patient by blood chemistry, endoscopies, and abdominal computed tomography scan. The immunohistochemical analysis showed decreased membranous expression of LAT1 and LAT2 in distal ileum and ascending colon in the patient compared to 20 controls who have no thyroid disease. The expression of MCT8 in colon appeared at both nucleus and brush border in the patient, while it was limited to brush border in controls. The expression of other transporters was similar between the patient and controls.
The changes of the expression of LAT1 and LAT2 in this patient showing LT4 malabsorption might help to understand the role of intestinal transporters in the absorption of LT4 in humans. The functional relevance of the decrement of LAT1 and LAT2 in this patient remains to be elucidated.
Thyroid nodules are very common, and 7% to 15% of them are diagnosed as thyroid cancer. However, the inherited genetic risk factors for thyroid nodules and their associations with thyroid cancer ...remain unknown.
To identify the genetic variants associated with susceptibility to thyroid nodules in comparison with thyroid cancer.
We performed a three-stage genome-wide association study for thyroid nodules. The discovery stage involved a genome-wide scan of 811 subjects with thyroid nodules and 691 subjects with a normal thyroid from a population-based cohort. Replication studies were conducted in an additional 1981 cases and 3100 controls from the participants of a health checkup. We also performed expression quantitative trait loci analysis of public data.
The most robust association was observed in TRPM3 (rs4745021) in the joint analysis (OR, 1.26; P = 6.12 × 10-8) and meta-analysis (OR, 1.28; P = 2.11 × 10-8). Signals at MBIP/NKX2-1 were replicated but did not reach genome-wide significance in the joint analysis (rs2415317, P = 4.62 × 10-5; rs944289, P = 8.68 × 10-5). The expression quantitative trait loci analysis showed that TRPM3 expression was associated with the rs4745021 genotype in thyroid tissues.
To the best of our knowledge, we have performed the first genome-wide association study of thyroid nodules and identified a susceptibility locus associated with thyroid nodules, suggesting that thyroid nodules have a genetic predisposition distinct from that of thyroid cancer.
