The modernist era in Russia is traditionally understood as beginning in 1893, with the publication of Dmitrii Merezhkovskii's article "O prichinakh upadka i novykh techeniiakh v sovremennoi russkoi ...literature" (On the Causes of the Decline and on the New Trends in Contemporary Russian Literature), which announced the arrival of Symbolism in Russian literature, and ending with the official rejection of the avant-garde movements and subsequent declaration of the principles of socialist realism in literature and the visual arts around 1932. ...a significant chronological shift needs justification and further explanation.
