The MEG experiment, designed to search for the Formula omitted decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of Formula omitted for the branching ratio. In order to increase the ...sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of Formula omitted, a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

Dermanyssus gallinae (Mesostigmata: Dermanyssidae, De Geer, 1778) is an ectoparasite of poultry, suspected to play a role as a vector of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. Gallinarum. Despite ...an association between them being reported, the actual dynamics in field remain unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to confirm the interactions among mites, pathogen and chickens. The study was carried out in an industrial poultry farm infested by D. gallinae, during an outbreak of fowl typhoid. The presence of S. Gallinarum in mites was assessed and quantified by a semi‐nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real‐time PCR, respectively, in mites collected during two subsequent productive cycles and the sanitary break. The anti‐group D Salmonella antibodies were quantified by an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. During the outbreak and the sanitary break, S. Gallinarum was constantly present in mites. In the second cycle, scattered positivity was observed, although hens did not exhibit signs of fowl typhoid, as a result of the vaccination with BIO‐VAC SGP695 (Fatro, Ozzano Emilia Bo, Italy). The data strongly suggest that D. gallinae acts as reservoir of S. Gallinarum, thus allowing the pathogen to persist in farms. Furthermore, the present study has highlighted the interactions among D. gallinae, S. Gallinarum and hens with respect to enhancing the mite‐mediated circulation of S. Gallinarum in an infested poultry farm.
The association between Dermanyssus gallinae and Samonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. Gallinarum has been confirmed in the field during a fowl typhoid outbreak in an infested industrial poultry farm.
The infection rate of Dermanyssus gallinae and the microbial load in mites were numerically related to the circulation of Salmonella Gallinarum in the flock.
Preventive measures, such as a proper vaccination programme, may prevent the infection and the common reinfection of the new flocks after the sanitary break.

Abstract
Ultra-thin metallic anode and cathode wires are frequently
employed in low-mass gaseous detectors for precision experiments,
where the amount of material crossed by charged particles must be
...minimised. We present here the results of an analysis of the
mechanical stress and chemical corrosion effects observed in 40
and 50 μm diameter silver plated aluminum wires
mounted within the volume of the MEG II drift chamber, which caused
the breakage of about one hundred wires (over a total of
≈ 12000). This analysis is based on the careful inspection
of the broken wires by means of optical and electronic microscopes
and on a detailed recording of all breaking incidents. We present a
simple empirical model which relates the number of broken wires to
their exposure time to atmospheric relative humidity and to their
mechanical tension, which is necessary for mechanical stability in
the presence of electrostatic fields of several kV/cm. Finally we
discuss how wire breakages can be avoided or at least strongly
reduced by operating in controlled atmosphere during the mounting
stages of the wires within the drift chamber and by choosing a
25 % thicker wire diameter, which has very small effects on the
detector resolution and efficiency and can be obtained by using a
safer fabrication technique.

Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a highly contagious respiratory disease of poultry, caused by the avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Currently, one of the most relevant genotypes circulating worldwide is IBV-QX (GI-19), for which vaccines have been developed by passaging virulent QX strains in embryonated chicken eggs. Here we explored the attenuated phenotype of a commercially available QX live vaccine, IB Primo QX, in specific pathogens free broilers. At hatch, birds were inoculated with QX vaccine or its virulent progenitor IBV-D388, and postmortem swabs and tissues were collected each day up to eight days post infection to assess viral replication and morphological changes. In the trachea, viral RNA replication and protein expression were comparable in both groups. Both viruses induced morphologically comparable lesions in the trachea, albeit with a short delay in the vaccinated birds. In contrast, in the kidney, QX vaccine viral RNA was nearly absent, which coincided with the lack of any morphological changes in this organ. This was in contrast to high viral RNA titers and abundant lesions in the kidney after IBV D388 infection. Furthermore, QX vaccine showed reduced ability to reach and replicate in conjunctivae and intestines including cloaca, resulting in significantly lower titers and delayed protein expression, respectively. Nephropathogenic IBVs might reach the kidney also via an ascending route from the cloaca, based on our observation that viral RNA was detected in the cloaca one day before detection in the kidney. In the kidney distal tubular segments, collecting ducts and ureter were positive for viral antigen. Taken together, the attenuated phenotype of QX vaccine seems to rely on slower dissemination and lower replication in target tissues other than the site of inoculation.

The widespread use in drift chambers of light helium-based gas mixtures is aimed to minimize the multiple scattering contribution to the momentum measurement for low momentum particles. However, ...because of the limited number of ionization clusters produced, these gas mixtures introduce a substantial bias in the impact parameter estimate, particularly for short impact parameters and small drift cells. Recently, an alternative impact parameter reconstruction technique (Cluster Timing) has been proposed, which consists in using, with statistical considerations, the distribution of the drift times of all individual ionization clusters, to reduce the bias and, consequently, to improve the spatial resolution. A hardware test of such application is illustrated with the details of the applied algorithm.
A syndrome characterized by apathy, diarrhoea and high mortality of nestlings was observed in a flock of pet birds of the family Estrildidae. Enlargement of the liver, pulmonary congestion and urate ...accretions in the kidney were observed. Microscopically, there was glomerular atrophy, oedema and congestion of the lungs and necrosis and fibrosis of the liver. Cowdry type B intranuclear inclusion bodies were detected in the tissues. Polyomavirus was detected by polymerase chain reaction. The entire genome of the virus was amplified and sequenced, revealing 99 % identity to the sequence of finch polyomavirus isolated from the Eurasian bullfinch (family Fringillidae).

A fast charge sensitive preamplifier was designed and built in a 90 nm CMOS technology. The work is part of the R&D effort towards the read out of pixel or small strip sensors in next generation HEP ...experiments. The preamplifier features outstanding noise performance given its wide bandwidth, with a ENC (equivalent noise charge) of about 350 electrons RMS with a detector of 1 pF capacitance. With proper filtering, the ENC drops to less than 200 electrons RMS. Power consumption is 5 mW for one channel, and the closed loop bandwith is about 180 MHz, for a rise-time down to 2 ns in the fastest operation mode. Thanks to some freedom left to the user in setting the open loop gain, detectors with larger source capacitance can be read out without significant loss in bandwidth, being the rise time still 5.5 ns for a 5.6 pF detector. The output can drive a 50 Omega terminated transmission line.
Abstract
Background
Patients with type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM) diabetes are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases and their complications. The National Vaccinal Prevention Plan ...2017-2019 includes specific recommendations for patients with diabetes, which in 2018 have been included in the standards of care of the Italian Diabetes Society (SID) and Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (AMD).
Methods
Adult diabetic patients attending the Diabetes clinic at the San Raffaele Hospital, a large teaching hospital in Milan, Italy, were surveyed with a questionnaire to investigate self-reported vaccinal history, knowledge, attitudes and practice on the recommended vaccinations, vaccinal hesitancy and information sources on the topic.
Results
Between May 16 and November 11, 2019 N = 222 T1DM and N = 57 T2DM patients were enrolled. 25.2% of T1DM and 26.3% of T2DM patients did get vaccinated annually against the flu in the past 3 year. 85.0% of T2DM patients were vaccinated at the General Practitioner's (GP) clinic, while 54.9% of T1DM patients were vaccinated by their GP and 24.4% from territorial vaccinal clinics. 54.5% of T1DM and 50.0% of T2DM patients chose not to be vaccinated because they didn't consider the vaccine useful, while the second most common reason was that they have not been advised by healthcare personnel.
Conclusions
We documented a low coverage and knowledge about influenza vaccination. Patients with diabetes trusted information and advice of diabetologists and GPs about vaccination and claimed that they would be more likely to vaccinate if vaccination were offered in the diabetes clinic. Implementing training programs for professionals and educational campaigns for patients with diabetes may improve vaccinal coverage.
Key messages
Vaccination coverage in T1DM and T2DM patients is low due to vaccination hesitancy. A strong action from care givers, in order to raise vaccination awareness in this at-risk population, is needed.
