A current remaining challenge in nanotechnology is the fast and reliable determination of the ratios between engineered nanoparticles and the species attached to their surface after chemical ...functionalization. The approach proposed herein based on the online coupling of asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) with inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) allows for the first time the direct determination of such ratios in CdSe/ZnS core–shell quantum dot:rat monoclonal IgG2a antibody (QD:Ab) conjugate mixtures in a single run without any previous sample preparation (i.e., derivatization). AF4 provides full recovery and adequate resolution of the resulting bioconjugate from the excess of nanoparticles and proteins used in the different bioconjugation mixtures (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 QD:Ab molar ratios were assessed). The point-by-point determination by ICP-MS/MS of the metal to sulfur ratios along the bioconjugate fractographic peak allowed disclosing the mixture of the different species in the bioconjugated sample, providing not only the limits of the range of QD:Ab ratios in the different bioconjugate species resulting after functionalization but also a good estimation of their individual relative abundance in the mixture. Interestingly, a wide variety of compositions were observed for the different bioconjugate mixtures studied (QD:Ab molar ratios ranging from 0.27 to 4.6). The resulting weighted QD:Ab ratio computed in this way for each bioconjugate peak matches well with both the global (average) QD:Ab ratio experimentally obtained by the simpler peak area ratio computation and the theoretical QD:Ab molar ratios assayed, which internally validates the procedure developed.

Traditionally, the study of the Roman military presence in Galicia (Spain) and Northern Portugal has been based on the fragmentary documentation offered by Greek and Latin authors or epigraphy, with ...archaeology occupying a very secondary place in these historical narratives. In particular, the information is very scarce for the period between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE, when these territories were conquered and integrated into the Roman world. This work presents new Roman military sites discovered through an integrated methodology involving an intensive application of remote sensing techniques in order to provide information to foster a paradigm shift in this field of study. Distributed over a wide geographical area and displaying a wide morpho-typological and locational diversity, this new archaeological evidence not only reflects the ability of the Roman army to adapt to local natural and cultural environments, but also reveals a major operational and logistical assortment that may relate to the diachronic nature of the military presence in the region.

Different very simple single-use alcohol enzyme sensors were developed using alcohol oxidase (AOX) from three different yeast, Hansenula sp., Pichia pastoris and Candida boidinii, and employing three different commercial mediator-based Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes as transducers. The mediators tested, Prussian Blue, Ferrocyanide and Co-phthalocyanine were included into the ink of the working electrode. The procedure to obtain these sensors consists of the immobilization of the enzyme on the electrode surface by adsorption. For the immobilization, an AOX solution is deposited on the working electrode and left until dried (1h) at room temperature. The best results were obtained with the biosensor using Screen-Printed Co-phthalocyanine/Carbon Electrode and AOX from Hansenula sp. The reduced cobalt–phthalocyanine form is amperometrically detected at +0.4V (vs. Ag pseudo reference electrode). This sensor shows good sensitivity (1211nAmM−1), high precision (2.1% RSD value for the slope value of the calibration plot) and wide linear response (0.05–1.00mM) for ethanol determination. The sensor provides also accurate results for ethanol quantification in alcoholic drinks.

Inorganic nanoparticles are a fascinating class of materials which promise great potential in numerous fields, including optical (bio)sensing. Many different kinds of such nanoparticles have been ...widely used for fluorescent sensing and imaging due to the different merits of fluorescent nanoparticles compared to molecular fluorophores. Progress made in the rational design of nanomaterials also allowed the synthesis of hybrid phosphorescent nanoparticles, that finds growing applications in sensing due to the combination of the interesting size- and shape-dependent properties of nanomaterials with a phosphorescence-type emission.
In this review, we intend to highlight some of progress made in this active research area and update the database of various phosphorescent nanoparticles-based sensors on the basis of different sensing targets of interest in environmental, industrial and biomedical areas.
Following an introduction and a discussion of merits of the synergy between nanomaterials and phosphorescence detection as compared to molecular luminophores the article assesses the kinds and specific features of nanomaterials often used in phosphorescence sensing. Specific examples on the use of phosphorescence nanoparticles in chemical sensing and bioimaging are given next. A final section intends to provide an overview of the prospects of such type of nanomaterials in the design of future devices for analytical chemistry.

Objective
1. To evaluate the humoral response against EBV and HHV-6 prior to teriflunomide treatment and 6 months later. 2. To correlate the variation in the humoral response against EBV and HHV-6 with the clinical and radiological response after 24 months of treatment with teriflunomide. 3. To analyze the utility of different demographic, clinical, radiological, and environmental data to identify early biomarkers of response to teriflunomide.
Methods
A total of 101 MS patients (62 women; mean age: 43.4 years) with one serum prior to teriflunomide onset and another serum sample 6 months later were recruited. A total of 80 had been treated for at least 24 months, 13 had stopped teriflunomide before 24 months, and 8 were currently under teriflunomide therapy but with less than 24 months of follow-up. We analyzed the levels of the viral antibodies titers abovementioned in serum samples with ELISA commercial kits, and the levels of serum neurofilament light chain (Nf-L).
Results
Antiviral antibody titers decreased for EBNA-1 IgG (74.3%), VCA IgG (69%), HHV-6 IgG (60.4%), and HHV-6 IgM (73.3%) after 6 months of teriflunomide. VCA IgG titers at baseline correlated with Nf-L levels measured at the same time (r = 0.221; p = 0.028) and 6 months later (r = 0.240; p = 0.017). We found that higher EBNA-1 titers (p = 0.001) and a higher age (p = 0.04) at baseline were associated with NEDA-3 conditions. Thus, 77.8% of patients with EBNA-1 >23.0 AU and >42.8 years (P50 values) were NEDA-3.
Conclusion
Treatment with teriflunomide was associated with a reduction of the levels of IgG antibody titers against EBV and HHV-6. Furthermore, higher EBNA-1 IgG titers prior to teriflunomide initiation were associated with a better clinical response.

The circRNAs correlated with some diastolic and systolic echocardiographic parameters with notable diagnostic potential in DCM. Circulating circRNAs may be helpful for the etiology-based diagnosis of DCM as a non-invasive biomarker.

Patient disability, relapse rate, and age are used for family planning in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the need for more accurate biomarkers is widely recognized. We aimed to explore the ...influence of age on neurofilament light chain (sNfL), which reflects acute inflammation; glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), associated with disability progression independent of relapses; and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), reflecting ovarian reserve, to provide a tailored family planning strategy.
This case-control study included 95 MS patients and 61 healthy control women (HCW). sNfL and GFAP levels were measured using a sensitive single-molecule array assay. AMH levels were measured by the automated Elecsys
Anti-Müllerian Hormone Assay.
We observed no significant differences in AMH values between MS patients and the control group within any of the age-matched categories. Age exhibited a negative correlation with AMH values in both groups, as expected. Nevertheless, our findings suggest a slight tendency toward reduced ovarian reserve in MS patients (rho MS patients = -0.67,
< 0.0001; rho HCW = -0.43,
= 0.0006). Interestingly, among the 76 MS participants under 40 years old, we identified ten individuals (13.1%) with AMH levels below 0.7 ng/ml, indicative of a low ovarian reserve, and an additional six individuals (7.8%) with AMH levels between 0.7 ng/ml and 0.9 ng/ml, suggesting a potential risk of premature ovarian failure. Conversely, sNfL and GFAP levels in the MS group exhibited high variability but showed no significant association with age intervals.
We found no significant differences in AMH, sNfL or GFAP values between MS patients and the control group within any of the age-matched categories. The assessment of AMH, sNFL and GFAP levels at MS onset facilitates personalized therapeutic and family planning strategies for childbearing-age women.

This has shed new light on the Roman military presence in Galicia, allowing its integration into wider European debates on Roman conquest and expansion.

Background
Obeticholic acid (OCA) was recently approved as the only on‐label alternative for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) with intolerance or suboptimal response to ...ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). However, few data are available outside clinical trials.
Aim
To assess the effectiveness and safety of OCA in a real‐world cohort of patients with non‐effective UDCA therapy.
Methods
Open‐label, prospective, real‐world, multicentre study, enrolling consecutive patients who did not meet Paris II criteria, from 18 institutions in Spain and Portugal. Effectiveness was assessed by the changes in GLOBE and UK‐PBC scores from baseline. POISE and Paris II criteria were evaluated after 12 months of OCA . Liver fibrosis was evaluated by FIB‐4 and AST to platelet ratio index (APRI).
Results
One hundred and twenty patients were eligible, median time since PBC diagnosis 9.3 (4.0‐13.8) years, 21.7% had cirrhosis, and 26.7% received had previous or concomitant treatment with fibrates. Seventy‐eight patients completed at least 1 year of OCA. The Globe‐PBC score decreased to 0.17 (95% CI 0.05 to 0.28; P = 0.005) and the UK‐PBC score decreased to 0.81 (95% CI −0.19 to 1.80; P = 0.11). There was a significant decrease in alkaline phosphatase of 81.3 U/L (95% CI 42.5 to 120; P < 0.001), ALT 22.1 U/L (95% CI 10.4 to 33.8; P < 0.001) and bilirubin 0.12 mg/dL (95% CI 0 to 0.24; P = 0.044). FIB‐4 and APRI remained stable. According to the POISE criteria, 29.5% (23 out of 78) achieved response. The adverse events rate was 35%; 11.67% discontinued (8.3% due to pruritus).
Conclusions
This study supports data from phase III trials with significant improvement of PBC‐Globe continuous prognostic marker score among OCA‐treated patients with good tolerability.

Over the last decades, global warming has contributed to changes in marine species composition, abundance and distribution, in response to changes in oceanographic conditions such as temperature, ...acidification, and deoxygenation. Experimentally derived thermal limits, which are known to be related to observed latitudinal ranges, have been used to assess variations in species distribution patterns. However, such experiments cannot be undertaken on free-swimming large marine predators with wide-range distribution, like cetaceans. An alternative approach is to elicit expert's knowledge to derive species' thermal suitability and assess their thermal responses, something that has never been tested in these taxa. We developed and applied a methodology based on expert-derived thermal suitability curves and projected future responses for several species under different climate scenarios. We tested this approach with ten cetacean species currently present in the biogeographic area of Macaronesia (North Atlantic) under Representative Concentration Pathways 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5, until 2050. Overall, increases in annual thermal suitability were found for Balaenoptera edeni, Globicephala macrorhynchus, Mesoplodon densirostris, Physeter macrocephalus, Stenella frontalis, Tursiops truncatus and Ziphius cavirostris. Conversely, our results indicated a decline in thermal suitability for B. physalus, Delphinus delphis, and Grampus griseus. Our study reveals potential responses in cetaceans' thermal suitability, and potentially in other highly mobile and large predators, and it tests this method's applicability, which is a novel application for this purpose and group of species. It aims to be a cost-efficient tool to support conservation managers and practitioners.
