Poverty, inequality, violence, environmental degradation, and tyranny continue to afflict the world. Ethics of Global Development offers a moral reflection on the ends and means of local, national, ...and global efforts to overcome these five scourges. After emphasizing the role of ethics in development studies, policy-making, and practice, David A. Crocker analyzes and evaluates Amartya Sen's philosophy of development in relation to alternative ethical outlooks. He argues that Sen's turn to robust ideals of human agency and democracy improves on both Sen's earlier emphasis on 'capabilities and functionings' and Martha Nussbaum's version of the capability orientation. This agency-focused capability approach is then extended and strengthened by applying it to the challenges of consumerism and hunger, the development responsibilities of affluent individuals and nations, and the dilemmas of globalization. Throughout the book the author argues for the importance of more inclusive and deliberative democratic institutions.
Introduction
Discrepancies have been previously reported for one‐stage clotting and chromogenic assays for FVIII activity analysis. Inter‐laboratory variations in instruments, method of clot ...detection, assay set‐up, reference standard calibration, reagent source and reagent composition all contribute to assay variability.
Aim
To characterise multilaboratory assay variability in measuring ADYNOVATE, OBIZUR and ADVATE FVIII activity in human plasma and survey multinational FVIII activity assay preferences.
Methods
As samples from patients treated with either of the FVIII products are not available in the quantities required for a systematic collaborative study, haemophilia A plasma was spiked in vitro with either ADYNOVATE (PEGylated rFVIII), OBIZUR Porcine Sequence Antihaemophilic Factor (Recombinant) or ADVATE at high (0.80 IU or U mL−1), medium (0.20 IU or U mL−1) and low (0.05 IU or U mL−1) FVIII concentrations, based on labelled potencies. Clinical laboratories used their routine FVIII activity assay to determine FVIII activity of each product. Thirty‐five data sets using one‐stage clotting assay and 11 sets using chromogenic assay were obtained.
Results
A vast majority of laboratories (98%) prefer and rely on the one‐stage clotting assay. Mean recoveries across all concentrations were 113%, 120% and 127% for ADYNOVATE, OBIZUR and ADVATE respectively. Assay variation was comparable between ADVATE, ADYNOVATE and OBIZUR with inter‐laboratory percent coefficients of variation (%CV) ranging from 11 to 22%. Mean chromogenic assay results were 116%, 51% and 113% for ADYNOVATE, OBIZUR and ADVATE respectively. Inter‐laboratory CV's were similar for ADYNOVATE, OBIZUR and ADVATE.
Conclusions
One‐stage clotting assays can and will be used with sufficient accuracy and precision for the measurement of ADYNOVATE, OBIZUR and ADVATE in plasma samples from subjects with haemophilia A. Chromogenic assay underestimates OBIZUR potency, particularly at lower concentrations.

If material bodies have inherent, animating powers—or virtues, in the premodern sense—then those bodies typically and most insistently associated in the premodern period with matter—namely, ...women—cannot be inert and therefore incapable of ethical action, Holly Crocker contends. In The Matter of Virtue, Crocker argues that one idea of what it means to be human—a conception of humanity that includes vulnerability, endurance, and openness to others—emerges when we consider virtue in relation to modes of ethical action available to premodern women. While a misogynistic tradition of virtue ethics, from antiquity to the early modern period, largely cast a skeptical or dismissive eye on women, Crocker seeks to explore what happened when poets thought about the material body not as a tool of an empowered agent whose cultural supremacy was guaranteed by prevailing social structures but rather as something fragile and open, subject but also connected to others.After an introduction that analyzes Hamlet to establish a premodern tradition of material virtue, Part I investigates how retellings of the demise of the title female character in Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, Henryson's Testament of Cresseid, and Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida among other texts structure a poetic debate over the potential for women's ethical action in a world dominated by masculine violence. Part II turns to narratives of female sanctity and feminine perfection, including ones by Chaucer, Bokenham, and Capgrave, to investigate grace, beauty, and intelligence as sources of women's ethical action. In Part III, Crocker examines a tension between women's virtues and household structures, paying particular attention to English Griselda- and shrew-literatures, including Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. She concludes by looking at Chaucer's Legend of Good Women to consider alternative forms of virtuous behavior for women as well as men.
The traditional picture of post-starburst galaxies as dust- and gas-poor merger remnants, rapidly transitioning to quiescence, has been recently challenged. Unexpected detections of a significant ...interstellar medium (ISM) in many post-starburst galaxies raise important questions. Are they truly quiescent, and if so, what mechanisms inhibit further star formation? What processes dominate their ISM energetics? We present an infrared spectroscopic and photometric survey of 33 E+A post-starbursts selected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, aimed at resolving these questions. We find compact, warm dust reservoirs with high PAH abundances and total gas and dust masses significantly higher than expected from stellar recycling alone. Both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)/total infrared (TIR) and dust-to-burst stellar mass ratios are seen to decrease with post-burst age, indicative of the accumulating effects of dust destruction and an incipient transition to hot, early-type ISM properties. Their infrared spectral properties are unique, with dominant PAH emission, very weak nebular lines, unusually strong H2 rotational emission, and deep C ii deficits. There is substantial scatter among star formation rate (SFR) indicators, and both PAH and TIR luminosities provide overestimates. Even as potential upper limits, all tracers show that the SFR has typically experienced a decline of more than two orders of magnitude since the starburst and that the SFR is considerably lower than expected given both their stellar masses and molecular gas densities. These results paint a coherent picture of systems in which star formation was, indeed, rapidly truncated, but in which the ISM was not completely expelled, and is instead supported against collapse by latent or continued injection of turbulent or mechanical heating. The resulting aging burst populations provide a "high-soft" radiation field that seemingly dominates the E+A galaxies' unusual ISM energetics.
Background
Public attitudes towards persons with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have a significant effect on potential community integration. A better understanding of these can help target service ...provision and public awareness programmes.
Objective
The objective of the present study is threefold: (1) describe public attitudes towards persons with ID along affective, cognitive and behavioural dimensions; (2) compare and contrast attitudes according to sex, age, education and income, as well as frequency and quality of contacts with persons with ID; and (3) ascertain whether the level of functioning has an effect on attitudes.
Methods
The Attitudes Toward Intellectual Disability Questionnaire (ATTID) was administered by phone to 1605 randomly selected adult men and women, stratified by region in the province of Québec, Canada. The ATTID uses a multidimensional perspective of attitudes that reflect affective, cognitive and behavioural dimensions.
Results
The results showed that public attitudes were generally positive regarding all three attitudinal dimensions. Public attitudes towards persons with ID are presented in terms of the five factors measured through the ATTID: (1) discomfort; (2) sensibility or tenderness; (3) knowledge of causes; (4) knowledge of capacity and rights; and (5) interaction. Attitude factor scores vary as a function of participant characteristics (sex, age, education and income) and the degree of knowledge about ID, the number of persons with ID known to the participants, as well as the frequency and quality of their contacts with these persons. Men had greater negative attitudes than women as regards the discomfort factor, while women had more negative attitudes regarding the knowledge of capacity and rights factor. More positive attitudes were revealed among younger and more educated participants. Attitudes were generally not associated with income. Public attitudes tended to be more negative towards people with lower functioning ID.
Conclusion
These results yield useful information to target public awareness and education.

Background
Few studies have examined attitudes that may promote the social inclusion of persons with an intellectual disability (ID) among health care providers (HCPs). Yet these attitudes could ...impact the accessibility and quality of services provided to this population, as well as the general attitudes of HCPs. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine HCPs' pro‐inclusion attitudes toward people with ID, (2) compare these to the general population's attitudes and (3) examine how HCPs' attitudes vary as a function of their socio‐demographic characteristics.
Method
The Attitudes Toward Intellectual Disability Questionnaire was administered to 367 HCPs and a representative sample of the Québec population (N = 1605).
Results
Results indicated that at least half of HCPs displayed positive attitudes, that is, attitudes that are compatible with notions of social inclusion and equal rights, toward individuals with ID. Positive attitudes were less frequently observed for the Interaction and the Sensitivity or tenderness factors measured by the Attitudes Toward Intellectual Disability Questionnaire. In comparison with the general population, HCPs exhibited more positive attitudes on the Knowledge of causes and Sensitivity or tenderness factors and less positive attitudes on the Interaction factor. HCPs who regarded themselves as more knowledgeable about ID and those who reported higher quality contacts or interactions with persons with ID expressed attitudes that were more favourable toward social inclusion.
Conclusions
In addition to providing general knowledge about ID and the specific health care needs of individuals with ID, training programmes should also promote interactions with this population. Further studies are needed to document HCPs' pro‐inclusion attitudes toward people with ID and to assess the impact of interventions on these attitudes.

Dynamic and thermal processes regulate the structure of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM), and ultimately establish how galaxies evolve through star formation. Thus, to constrain ISM models ...and better understand the interplay of these processes, it is of great interest to measure the thermal pressure ( ) of the diffuse, neutral gas. By combining C ii 158 m, H i, and CO data from 31 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH sample, we have measured thermal pressures in 534 predominantly atomic regions with typical sizes of ∼1 kiloparsec. We find a distribution of thermal pressures in the K cm−3 range. For a sub-sample of regions with conditions similar to those of the diffuse, neutral gas in the Galactic plane, we find thermal pressures that follow a log-normal distribution with a median value of Pth/k 3600 K cm−3. These results are consistent with thermal pressure measurements using other observational methods. We find that increases with radiation field strength and star formation activity, as expected from the close link between the heating of the gas and the star formation rate. Our thermal pressure measurements fall in the regime where a two-phase ISM with cold and warm neutral media could exist in pressure equilibrium. Finally, we find that the midplane thermal pressure of the diffuse gas is about ∼30% of the vertical weight of the overlying ISM, consistent with results from hydrodynamical simulations of self-regulated star formation in galactic disks.
This study aims to develop a microelectrode array-based neural probe that can record dopamine activity with high stability and sensitivity. To mimic the high stability of the gold standard method ...(carbon fiber electrodes), the microfabricated platinum microelectrode is coated with carbon-based nanomaterials. Carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were selected for this purpose, while a conductive polymer like poly (3-4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) or polypyrrole (PPy) serves as a stable interface between the platinum of the electrode and the carbon-based nanomaterials through a co-electrodeposition process. Based on our comparison between different conducting polymers and the addition of CQD, the CNT-CQD-PPy modified microelectrode outperforms its counterparts: CNT-CQD-PEDOT, CNT-PPy, CNT-PEDOT, and bare Pt microelectrode. The CNT-CQD-PPy modified microelectrode has a higher conductivity, stability, and sensitivity while achieving a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 35.20 ± 0.77 nM. Using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), these modified electrodes successfully measured dopamine's redox peaks while exhibiting consistent and reliable responses over extensive use. This electrode modification not only paves the way for real-time, precise dopamine sensing using microfabricated electrodes but also offers a novel electrochemical sensor for in vivo studies of neural network dynamics and neurological disorders.

AMD3100 given with G-CSF has been shown to mobilize CD34+ cells in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), multiple myeloma (MM), and Hodgkin's disease (HD) patients who could not collect sufficient cells for ...autologous transplant following other mobilization regimens. These poor mobilizers are usually excluded from company-sponsored trials, but have been included in an AMD3100 Single Patient Use protocol, referred to as a Compassionate Use Protocol (CUP). A cohort of 115 data-audited poor mobilizers in CUP was assessed, with the objective being to collect > or =2 x 10(6) CD34+ cells per kg following AMD3100 plus G-CSF mobilization. The rates of successful CD34+ cell collection were similar for patients who previously failed chemotherapy mobilization or cytokine-only mobilization: NHL -- 60.3%, MM -- 71.4% and HD -- 76.5%. Following transplant, median times to neutrophil and PLT engraftment were 11 days and 18 days, respectively. Engraftment was durable. There were no drug-related serious adverse events. Of the adverse events considered related to AMD3100, two (1.6%) were severe (one patient -- headache, one patient -- nightmares). Other AMD3100-related adverse events were mild (84.8%) or moderate (13.6%). The most common AMD3100-related adverse events were gastrointestinal reactions, injection site reactions and paresthesias. AMD3100 plus G-CSF offers a new treatment to collect CD34+ cells for autologous transplant from poor mobilizers, with a high success rate.
