This work adopts an efficient chemical-wet method to build a three-dimensional (3D) carbon composite as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). Carbon dots (CDs), prepared ...by thermal pyrolysis of citric acid and urea under microwaves at 280 °C, are homogeneously coated onto lignin-based activated carbons (ACs), thus forming the 3D composites possessing an interior surface decorated with CD binding sites. Benefiting from the hydrophilicity and ultrafine size of CDs, the affinity of the electrode surface toward aqueous electrolytes is significantly improved with the addition of CDs, leading to the enhanced effective surface area (i.e., abundant electroactive sites) and a decreased ionic diffusion path. The capacitance of the SCs is improved from 125.8 to 301.7 F g–1 with CD addition. The SC with CD addition possesses improved cycle stability with a coulombic efficiency around 100% after 3000 cycles. After cycling, the ion diffusion coefficient of the CD@AC-11 electrode is enhanced by 25.5 times as compared to that of the pristine AC one. This unique and robust carbon framework can be utilized for engineering the desired pore structure and micropore/mesopore fraction within the AC electrodes. This strategy of CD@AC electrodes demonstrates a promising route for using renewable porous carbon materials in advanced energy-storage devices.

Background: Adipocyte, the main cellular component of white adipose tissue, plays a vital role in energy balance in higher eukaryotes. In recent years, adipocytes have also been identified as a major ...endocrine organ involved in immunological responses, vascular diseases, and appetite regulation. In farm animals, fat content and categories are closely correlated with meat quality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of endogenous single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules, participate in the regulation of adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis through regulating the transcription or translation of target mRNAs. MiR-378 plays an important role in a number of biological processes, including cell growth, cell differentiation, tumor cell survival and angiogenesis. Methods: In the present study, bioinformatics analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assay were used to identify and validate the target genes of miR-378. In vitro cell transfection, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), western blot analysis, Oil Red O staining, and triglyceride content measurement were conducted to analyze the effects of miR-378 on bovine preadipocyte differentiation. Results: MiR-378 was induced during adipocyte differentiation. In the differentiated adipocytes overexpressing miR-378, the volume of lipid droplets was enlarged, and the triglyceride content was increased. Moreover, the mRNA expression levels of the adipocyte differentiation marker genes, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP), were significantly elevated in the differentiated, mature adipocytes. In contrast, the mRNA expression level of preadipocyte factor 1 (Pref-1) was markedly reduced. E2F transcription factor 2 (E2F2) and Ras-related nuclear (RAN)-binding protein 10 (RANBP10) were the two target genes of miR-378. The mRNA expression levels of E2F2 and RANBP10 did not significantly change in bovine preadipocytes overexpressing miR-378. However, the protein expression levels of E2F2 and RANBP10 were markedly reduced. Conclusion: MiR-378 promoted the differentiation of bovine preadipocytes. E2F2 and RANBP10 were the two target genes of miR-378, and might involve in the effects of miR-378 on the bovine preadipocyte differentiation.
A series of novel thiazolium-bis(triflamide) based ionic liquids has been synthesized and characterized. Physicochemical properties of the ionic liquids such as thermal stability, phase transitions, ...and infrared spectra were analyzed and compared to the imidazolium-based congeners. Several unique classes of ancillary substitutions are examined with respect to impacts on overall structure, in addition to their carbon dioxide absorption properties in supported ionic-liquid membranes for gas separation.

Cancer metastasis is a highly coordinated and dynamic multistep process in which cancer cells interact with a variety of host cells. Morphological studies have documented the association of ...circulating tumor cells with host platelets, where a surface coating of platelets protects tumor cells from mechanical trauma and the immune system. Cantharidin is an active constituent of mylabris, a traditional Chinese medicine. Cantharidin and norcantharidin are potent protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) inhibitors that exhibit in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity against several types of cancer, including breast cancer. We investigated whether cantharidin and norcantharidin could repress the ability of MCF-7 breast cancer cells to adhere to platelets. Using MTT, clone formation, apoptosis, adhesion and wound-healing assays, we found that cantharidin and norcantharidin induced apoptosis and repressed MCF-7 cell growth, adhesion and migration. Moreover, we developed a flow cytometry-based analysis of tumor cell adhesion to platelets. We proved that cantharidin and norcantharidin repressed MCF-7 cell adhesion to platelets through downregulation of α2 integrin, an adhesion molecule present on the surface of cancer cells. The repression of α2 integrin expression was found to be executed through the protein kinase C pathway, the activation of which could have been due to PP2A inhibition.
UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS/MS was used to systematically analyze and compare the alkaloids in Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, Aconiti Radix, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata. After the samples ...were pretreated in the solid-phase extraction cartridges, 0.1% ammonium hydroxide(A)-acetonitrile(B) was used for gradient elution. The LC-MS method for characterization of alkaloids in the three herbal medicines was established in ESI positive ion mode to collect high resolution MS data of reference substances and samples. On the basis of the information of reference substance cracking behavior, retention time, accurate molecular mass, and related literature, a total of 155 alkaloids were identified in Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, Aconiti Radix, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Prae-parata. Specifically, 130, 127, and 92 alkaloids were identified in Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, Aconiti Radix, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, respectively. Monoester alkaloids and amino-alcohol alkaloids were dominant in the three herba
The nature and role of different Au species on a Au/SiO2 catalyst in room temperature (rt) CO oxidation have been studied by operando diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT) coupled with ...quadruple mass spectrometry (QMS). It has shown that different pretreatments (oxidative and reductive) of Au/SiO2 have a significant effect on the nature of Au species and thus the CO oxidation performance. High temperature (500 °C) O2-treatment leads to cationic Au species which is inactive for rt CO oxidation. Reductive treatment (either H2 or CO) results in metallic Au species that are immediately active for rt CO oxidation. Furthermore, CO oxidation activity is found in good correlation with the reduction degree of Au species, a clear indication of the essential role of metallic Au species played in rt CO oxidation. The accompanying slight deactivation with the oxidation of metallic Au species on reductively treated Au/SiO2 in CO oxidation suggests that cationic Au species may play a negative role in rt CO oxidation. The effect of water in rt CO oxidation on Au/SiO2 was also investigated. Two positive roles played by water in CO oxidation have been identified: activation of O2 and assistance the reduction of cationic Au species.

Recent research has revealed molecular structure beyond the inner coordination sphere is essential in defining the performance of separation processes; nevertheless, such structure remains largely ...unexplored. Here we apply small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy to investigate the structure of an ionic liquid system studied for f-block element separations. SANS data reveal dramatic changes in the ionic liquid microstructure (∼150 Å) which we demonstrate can be controlled by judicious selection of counterion. Mesoscale structural features (>500 Å) are also observed as a function of metal concentration. XAFS analysis supports formation of extended aggregate structures, similar to those observed in traditional solvent extraction processes, and suggests additional parallels may be drawn from further study. Achieving precise tunability over the intermediate features is an important development in controlling mesoscale structure and realizing advanced new forms of soft matter.

•The mode conversion has been found in the Y-branch three terminal junction for the P wave and SV wave.•The non-integer quantization thermal conductance have been found.•The work suggests that such ...Y-branch structure can be act as a thermal shunt.
The thermal transport properties of Y-branch three terminal junction are studied by using the scattering-matrix method for in-plane waves. The mode conversion has been considered for two transmitted components (P wave and SV wave). The results show that the phonon mode separation behavior exists not only at low incident frequencies but also at high incident frequencies. The non-integer quantization thermal conductance has been found. Furthermore, the transmission coefficients of acoustic phonon in both branches can be modulated by the phonon nanocavity length L. The work suggests that such Y-branch structure can be act as a thermal shunt.
