This review provides focused insights into the contamination status, sources, and ecological risks associated with multiple classes of antibiotics in surface water from the East and Southeast Asia ...based on publications over the period 2007 to 2020. Antibiotics are ubiquitous in surface water of these countries with concentrations ranging from <1 ng/L to hundreds μg/L and median values from 10 to 100 ng/L. Wider ranges and higher maximum concentrations of certain antibiotics were found in surface water of the East Asian countries like China and South Korea than in the Southeast Asian nations. Environmental behavior and fate of antibiotics in surface water is discussed. The reviewed occurrence of antibiotics in their sources suggests that effluent from wastewater treatment plants, wastewater from aquaculture and livestock production activities, and untreated urban sewage are principal sources of antibiotics in surface water. Ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues were estimated for aquatic organisms and the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotic-resistant bacteria were reviewed. Such findings underline the need for synergistic efforts from scientists, engineers, policy makers, government managers, entrepreneurs, and communities to manage and reduce the burden of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in water bodies of East and Southeast Asian countries.

In this study, novel biogenic silver (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were developed using a green approach with Ganoderma lucidum (GL) extract. The optimization of synthesis conditions for the ...best outcomes was conducted. The prepared materials were characterized and their applicability in catalysis, antibacterial and chemical sensing was comprehensively evaluated. The GL-AgNPs crystals were formed in a spherical shape with an average diameter of 50 nm, while GL-AuNPs exhibited multi-shaped structures with sizes ranging from 15 to 40 nm. As a catalyst, the synthesized nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic activity (>98% in 9 min) and reusability (>95% after five recycles) in converting 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. As an antimicrobial agent, GL-AuNPs were low effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria, while GL-AgNPs expressed strong antibacterial activity against all the tested strains. The highest growth inhibition activity of GL-AgNPs was observed against B. subtilis (14.58 ± 0.35 mm), followed by B. cereus (13.8 ± 0.52 mm), P. aeruginosa (12.38 ± 0.64 mm), E. coli (11.3 ± 0.72 mm), and S. aureus (10.41 ± 0.31 mm). Besides, GL-AgNPs also demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity in the colorimetric detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 1.85 nM. Due to the suitable thickness of the protective organic layer and the appropriate particle size, GL-AgNPs validated the triple role as a high-performance catalyst, antimicrobial agent, and nanosensor for environmental monitoring and remediation.

N probase to accelerate the growth of Cu-BTC. The fast growth enables the formation of a microporous structure with better adsorption of targeted molecules. The two-dimensional arrangement of units made of dimeric copper cations coordinated to carboxylate anions helped to improve the electrochemical conductivity and electron transfer rate at the electrode surface (charge transfer resistance was dramatically decreased from 2173 Ω to 86 Ω). The electrocatalytic activity of copper ion centers in Cu-BTC was studied with peak separation between oxidation and reduction peaks of pseudo-redox paracetamol molecules much shortened (from 629 mV to 87 mV). Consequently, the sensing parameters (sensitivity and detection limit) of the as-prepared paracetamol sensor were considerably improved. Further works need to be conducted on tailoring ligand structure in order to much improve the electrical conductivity of metal-organic frameworks for sensing purposes.

Herein, poly(propylene) (PP) was hydrophilized with oxidating agents and solvents, followed by dip‐coating with silver nanoparticles anchored GO sheets (Ag@GO) prepared by the in‐situ method as ...reported in our previous study to obtain silver@graphene oxide‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@GO/PP). The impact of the modifying agents, dipping times, and coating concentrations on the antibacterial activities were studied accordingly via the inhibition zone method. The fabrics were re‐hydrophobized with the reduction of Ag@GO and the functionalization with stearic acid (SA) to form silver@reduced graphene oxide‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@rGO/PP) and silver@graphene oxide/SA‐coated poly(propylene) (Ag@rGO‐SA/PP), respectively. Characterization of pretreated and modified PP samples was carried out by various modern analysis methods. Simultaneously, the cytotoxicity of the active layers, the release of Ag+ ions, and durability after washing were also investigated. The obtained results representing PP fabrics pretreated with HNO3/isopropanol and dipped in Ag@GO concentration of 2 g/L four times prove a sufficient approach for improving hydrophilization and bio‐compatibility for the PP samples. The fabrics greatly show an impressive interaction with precursors, mostly high antibacterial activity even after four washing cycles via appropriate releasing of Ag+ to ensure the safety in usage. They further suggest that the prepared fabrics could be utilized for actual application as a face mask.

Sugarcane is one of the most important industrial crops in Vietnam and covers a total of 127,000 hectares of plantation area. In the season 2020–2021, Vietnam has produced 0.763 million tons of sugar ...(accounting for 0.34% total world sugar production). A current sugarcane production of 7.498 million tons is being used mainly for sugar production for direct consumption, ethanol production, bio-electricity and fertilization. To ensure crop sustainability, various policies and plans have been implemented. Crop breeding and zoning improvement programme significantly influence sugarcane production and sugar yield. Over 25 years since the programme “one million ton of sugar” was promoted, Vietnam currently possesses 25 sugar mills with a total capacity of 110,000 tons of sugarcane per day. Major problems of sugarcane industry as well as research and development have been discussed in this review. Recent research and development work focused on the added values of co-products to ensure sustainability of the sugarcane industry. Molasses will be used for ethanol production, and bagasse is used as the biomass for the alternative energy. Sugarcane and sugar would be the main feedstocks for those bio-economy growths in Vietnam. To keep the sustainable development of the sugar industry, and to meet the demand of the food and non-food requirements, it is necessary to upgrade the sugar value chain through the adoption and the development of co-products of the sugar industry.

A phytochemical fractionation of a methanol extract of Ophiopogon japonicus tubers led to the isolation of a new homoisoflavanone, homoisopogon A (1), and three new homoisoflavanes, homoisopogon B–D ...(2–4). Their chemical structures were elucidated by mass, NMR, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic methods. Homoisopogon A (1) exhibited potent cytotoxicity against human lung adenocarcinoma LU-1, human epidermoid carcinoma KB, and human melanoma SK-Mel-2 cancer cells with IC50 values ranging from 0.51 to 0.66 µM.

Essential oils were extracted from the culm and leaf of Cymbopogon citratus collected from different regions of Vietnam and analyzed using GC/MS. The results showed that citral is the major component ...accounting for 61.20%–76.46% of the essential oils. The citral content was higher in the essential oil obtained from the leaf than in that from the culm of lemongrass in all regions. In particular, camphene, valerianol, and epi-α-muurolol can be used to differentiate essential oils originating from leaves versus culms. The cytotoxic effects of the essential oils on various lung cancer cell lines were evaluated in the present study. All essential oils exhibited cytotoxicity in the tested cells. The Ha Loc leaf essential oil (HLL) exhibited the most potent effects on A549 and H1975 cells, with IC50 values of 1.73 ± 0.37 and 4.01 ± 0.30 μg/mL, respectively. The Hy Cuong leaf essential oil (HCL) showed the strongest effect on H1299 cells, with an IC50 value of 2.45 ± 0.21 μg/mL. The Kim Duc culm (KDC) essential oil exerted the strongest cytotoxic effects against H1650 cells, with an IC50 value of 4.86 ± 0.29 μg/mL. The HLL induced apoptosis and cycle arrest in A549 cells according to flow cytometric analysis and fluorescent nuclear staining assays. The western blot analysis indicated that HLL induced the apoptotic effect by altering the regulating proteins of the apoptosis process such as caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Bax. The data strongly suggested that the intrinsic pathway may play an important role in the apoptotic effects of HLL.

This study describes a novel green synthesis of Nb-ZnO based on Vernonia amygdalina leaves extract as a reactant without using any commercial chemicals. The fabricated composites were characterized and applied for degradation of tetracycline under visible light. Nb-ZnO samples showed markedly improved photocatalytic activity compared to ZnO. The photocatalyst with an Nb:Zn molar ratio of 1:1 had the highest tetracycline degradation efficiency, reached 93.2% in 180 min. The Nb-ZnO composite also possessed superior recyclability and stability. The photocatalytic mechanism was established with the main participation of •O2− and •OH reactive radicals. Nb-ZnO can be used as a promising photocatalyst for antibiotic removal.
