Given the recent criticisms in the literature regarding Synthes Variable Angle Locking Compression Condylar Plate (VA-LCP), the purpose of this study was to evaluate functional outcome, fracture ...healing, and complications of distal femoral intra-articular fractures using this device.
Patients with distal femoral fractures treated with 4.5 mm VA-LCP Curved Condylar Plate were included in this retrospective study. Follow-ups were at 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. For the clinical and functional assessment of the knee, WOMAC, Koos Knee Survey, the Knee Score Society and the SF-12 questionnaire were used. Radiographically we assessed the fracture healing and the angles of the operated limb compared to the healthy contralateral limb. Complications have also been described.
Forty-two patients with distal femoral fractures were included in the study. The mean follow-up was 8 months. Most cases (57%) reported a type 33-A fracture. Radiological healing was achieved in 33 cases; the mean time required to heal was 13 weeks. Three patients had an early postoperative complication and four cases had a late complication. Five cases required additional surgical procedures. Most patients (47.2%) achieved a complete flexion of 130° or more. WOMAC mean value 27.4%, KSS mean value 77.6 for the clinical part and 60 for the functional part, KOOS mean score 60.1, SF-12 mean score 46.1 for MCS and 35.5 for PCS.
The results of this retrospective study suggest that VA-LCP Curved Condylar Plates have a good functional outcome and fracture healing similar to other standard distal femoral locking plates. VA technology allows greater versatility in fractures internal fixation regardless of the plate design. Fixation devices or Prosthesis implants previously placed may be avoided, as in periprosthetic fractures. Moreover, we have not recorded any early mechanical damage.
Osteosynthesis with Synthes 4.5 mm VA-LCP Curved Condylar Plate demonstrated to have no early mechanical failure rate with good clinical and radiological results.

Rhythm‐Symptom Correlation in Patients on Continuous Monitoring
Introduction
Correlation between symptoms and atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes after catheter ablation may have clinical relevance, ...especially for anticoagulation usage. The aim of our project was to analyze the relationship between symptoms and AF recurrences in unselected patients following AF catheter ablation during long‐term follow‐up.
Methods and Results
One hundred and forty‐three consecutive patients (mean age 59 ± 9 years, 85% male) were implanted with a continuous cardiac monitor (RevealXT, Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA) following first pulmonary vein ablation procedure. Device data were downloaded every 3 months and correlated to patients’ symptom diary. AF was paroxysmal in 55% and persistent in 45%. At a mean follow‐up of 14 ± 6 months, 98/143 (69%) patients had at least one AF recurrence. Among these, 53 (54%) reported AF‐related symptoms while 45 (46%) were totally asymptomatic. Conversely, 13 (29%) out of 45 patients without AF recurrences reported symptoms. Globally, a significant reduction of symptoms (from 82% at baseline to 44% at last follow‐up; P < 0.0001) was observed. SF‐12 questionnaire showed a significant improvement of physical and mental functioning (respectively 44.5 ± 8.5 vs 51.0 ± 6.7, and 45.7 ± 9.3 vs 49.2 ± 6.1, P < 0.05 baseline vs last follow‐up). At the 12‐month follow‐up, 80% and 77% of patients were on AAD and anticoagulant drugs, respectively. There were not differences in AAD usage in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
Conclusions
Continuous ECG monitoring is a valuable tool for long‐term follow‐up after AF catheter ablation facilitating reliable assessment of symptomatic and asymptomatic AF episodes. This may have clinical implications with regards to anticoagulation therapy in high‐risk patients.

Single-spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons are measured for the first time with transverse target polarization. The ...asymmetry depends on the azimuthal angles of both the pion (phi) and the target spin axis (phi(S)) about the virtual-photon direction and relative to the lepton scattering plane. The extracted Fourier component sin((phi+phi(S))(pi)(UT) is a signal of the previously unmeasured quark transversity distribution, in conjunction with the Collins fragmentation function, also unknown. The component sin((phi-phi(S)(pi)(UT) arises from a correlation between the transverse polarization of the target nucleon and the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks, as represented by the previously unmeasured Sivers distribution function. Evidence for both signals is observed, but the Sivers asymmetry may be affected by exclusive vector meson production.

A comprehensive set of azimuthal single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons from transversely polarized ...protons is presented. These asymmetries include the previously published HERMES results on Collins and Sivers asymmetries, the analysis of which has been extended to include protons and antiprotons and also to an extraction in a three-dimensional kinematic binning and enlarged phase space. They are complemented by corresponding results for the remaining four single-spin and four double-spin asymmetries allowed in the one-photon-exchange approximation of the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process for target-polarization orientation perpendicular to the direction of the incoming lepton beam. Liner dissociation (LD) is a rare catastrophic mechanical failure of total hip arthroplasty (THA). The study aims at reviewing the available literature regarding liner dissociations to point out ...their prevalence, describing any possible association and highlighting the surgical management at the time of revision.
A systematic review of the literature was conducted from January 2002, until February 2022, according to the PRISMA guidelines. The main keywords were: "dissociation" AND "liner" OR "hip arthroplasty" OR "THA" and their MeSH terms in any possible combination. Cases of liner dissociation with all levels of evidence of any age published in indexed journals were included. The study quality of all included studies was evaluated using the MINORS criteria. The kappa (k) value was used to assess the consensus between reviewers in the selection of articles and methodological quality assessment. Finally, a sub-analysis was performed specifically concerning the elderly population.
Thirty-one manuscripts met the inclusion criteria of the systematic review (21 case reports and 10 case series). 124 LD in 123 patients, (53% females and 47% males) were evaluated. The overall prevalence of LD was 0.15%. The mean age at surgery was of 56.5 years (range 31-75 years). LD occurred in a primary surgery setting in 86% of the cases, at a mean time of presentation of 45.8 months after replacement surgery. 39.5% of the cups and 8.8% of the stems required revision. The mean follow-up after the revision was 18.4 months. Complications after revision occurred in 19.6% of cases, including 3 cases of re-dissociations. Re-revision was required in 13.6% of the revisions. The sub-analysis of the elderly population included 28 cases of LD identified in 10 manuscripts, with an average age of 73.5 years.
LD is a rare but catastrophic mechanical complication of modular THA that requires implant revision. The LD is not related to a specific prosthetic implant, liner material or design, acetabular positioning within the safe zone or age group.
Evidence for a narrow baryon state is found in quasi-real photoproduction on a deuterium target through the decay channel pK0S→pπ+π−. A peak is observed in the pK0S invariant mass spectrum at ...1528±2.6(stat)±2.1(syst) MeV. Depending on the background model, the naive statistical significance of the peak is 4–6 standard deviations and its width may be somewhat larger than the experimental resolution of σ=4.3–6.2 MeV. This state may be interpreted as the predicted S=+1 exotic Θ+(uudds̄) pentaquark baryon. No signal for an hypothetical Θ++ baryon was observed in the pK+ invariant mass distribution. The absence of such a signal indicates that an isotensor Θ is excluded and an isovector Θ is unlikely.

In this paper we present a new technique for analysis of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, based on the Bessel weighting formalism. The procedure is applied to ...studies of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model. Using a fully differential cross section for the process, the effect of four momentum conservation is analyzed using various input models for transverse momentum distributions and fragmentation functions. We observe a few percent systematic offset of the Bessel-weighted asymmetry obtained from Monte Carlo extraction compared to input model calculations, which is due to the limitations imposed by the energy and momentum conservation at the given energy/

. We find that the Bessel weighting technique provides a powerful and reliable tool to study the Fourier transform of TMDs with controlled systematics due to experimental acceptances and resolutions with different TMD model inputs.

The surface of the asteroid Vesta has prominent near-infrared absorption bands characteristic of a range of pyroxenes, confirming a direct link to the basaltic howardite-eucrite-diogenite class of ...meteorites. Processes active in the space environment produce 'space weathering' products that substantially weaken or mask such diagnostic absorption on airless bodies observed elsewhere, and it has long been a mystery why Vesta's absorption bands are so strong. Analyses of soil samples from both the Moon and the asteroid Itokawa determined that nanophase metallic particles (commonly nanophase iron) accumulate on the rims of regolith grains with time, accounting for an observed optical degradation. These nanophase particles, believed to be related to solar wind and micrometeoroid bombardment processes, leave unique spectroscopic signatures that can be measured remotely but require sufficient spatial resolution to discern the geologic context and history of the surface, which has not been achieved for Vesta until now. Here we report that Vesta shows its own form of space weathering, which is quite different from that of other airless bodies visited. No evidence is detected on Vesta for accumulation of lunar-like nanophase iron on regolith particles, even though distinct material exposed at several fresh craters becomes gradually masked and fades into the background as the craters age. Instead, spectroscopic data reveal that on Vesta a locally homogenized upper regolith is generated with time through small-scale mixing of diverse surface components.
