Technologies of Wonder: Rhetorical Practice in a Digital World considers the theoretical and pedagogical implications of designing academic scholarship in interactive digital media, and proposes ...renewed emphasis on embodied visual rhetoric and on the canon of arrangement as an active visual practice. This project uses the concept of the Wunderkammer to argue for techné and wonder as guiding principles for a revitalized visual canon of arrangement and as new models of invention and intervention in multimodal scholarly production. Technologies of Wonder also presents examples of how this rhetoric of inquiry can be applied to multimodal projects in the classroom. New digital technologies offer viable alternatives to linear, less embodied traditions of academic scholarship. Emerging at a time when academic presses are under considerable economic pressure, Technologies of Wonder also serves as a model for how rigorous intellectual projects can be published and disseminated in less costly, more accessible formats.

The ALICE experiment at LHC will detect and identify prompt photons and light neutral-mesons with the PHOS detector and the additional EMCal electromagnetic calorimeter. Charged particles will be ...detected and identified by the central tracking system. In this article, the possibility of studying the interaction of jets with the nuclear medium, using prompt photons as a tool to tag jets, is investigated by simulations. New methods to identify prompt photon-jet events and to distinguish them from the jet–jet background are presented.

Measurements of direct photon production in p+Pb and p+C collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 17.4\mathrm{GeV}$ are presented. Upper limits on the direct photon yield as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$ ...are derived and compared to the results for Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 17.3$ GeV. The production of the $\eta$ meson, which is an important input to the direct photon signal extraction, has been determined in the $\eta \rightarrow 2\gamma$ channel for p+C collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 17.4\mathrm{GeV}$.

We present in this paper the measured characteristics of a 64 lead–tungstate crystal array designed to detect high-energy photons and neutral mesons with the ALICE photon spectrometer PHOS. The array ...has been tested with electron and charged pion secondary beams delivered by the CERN PS and SPS synchrotrons. Photon energy and π0 invariant mass resolutions are presented. The PHOS particle identification performance for data simulated with the AliRoot package is studied.

Heavy ion applications are investigated at various laboratories around the world. They mainly benefit from damages inflicted to materials by impinging ions. In this contribution I try to illustrate ...perspectives offered by such applications by describing the GANIL example: from initial activities to market research and to actual status. Even if, from my viewpoint, the field of applications is not blooming as we dream it should, the efforts are worth continuing.

Forward hadron measurements in p(d)+A provide a signal to study nuclear shadowing, initial state energy loss and/or gluon saturation effects as a function of rapidity, centrality and energy. High pT ...identified π0 measurements are an essential first step toward measuring prompt photon production. The π0 measurements are enabled by the PHENIX MPC-EX detector, a Si-W preshower detector located in front of the Muon Piston Calorimeter (MPC), expanding the neutral pion reconstruction capabilities in the rapidity range 3.1 <η < 3.8 out to high energies, E < 80 GeV. Previous PHENIX measurements of punch-through charged hadrons in the muon arms in the rapidity range 1.4 < |η| < 2.2 were significantly improved through the capability of the forward silicon vertex detector (FVTX) to determine the transverse momentum and rapidity with high precision and reject background from secondary hadrons.
PHENIX collected d+Au data with the MPC-EX in the 2016 run at sNN=200,62,39and19.6GeV; and p+p and p+Au(Al) data with the FVTX in 2015 at 200 GeV. In this talk, we will present first results for high pTπ0 production from the sNN=200GeV dataset, the status of the prompt photon measurement, as well as charged hadron nuclear modification factors in p+Au(Al) and 3He+Au.
