Purpose
Melatonin supplementation has been disclosed as an ergogenic substance. However, the effectiveness of melatonin supplementation in healthy subjects has not been systematically investigated. ...The present study analyzed the effects of melatonin supplementation on physical performance and recovery. In addition, it was investigated whether exercise bout or training alter melatonin secretion in athletes and exercise practitioners.
Methods
This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted and reported according to the guidelines outlined in the PRISMA statement. Based on the search and inclusion criteria, 21 studies were included in the systematic review, and 19 were included in the meta-analysis.
Results
Melatonin supplementation did not affect aerobic performance relative to time trial (−0.04; 95% CI: −0.51 to 0.44) and relative to VO
2
(0.00; 95% CI: −0.57 to 0.57). Also, melatonin supplementation did not affect strength performance (0.19; 95% CI: −0.28 to 0.65). Only Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) secretion increased after melatonin supplementation (1.40; 95% CI: 0.29 to 2.51). Post-exercise melatonin secretion was not changed immediately after an exercise session (0.56; 95% CI: −0.29 to 1.41) and 60 min after exercise (0.56; 95% CI: −0.29 to 1.41).
Conclusion
The data indicate that melatonin is not an ergogenic hormone. In contrast, melatonin supplementation improves post-exercise recovery, even without altering its secretion.

These benefits improve physical exertion tolerance and quality of life in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential of aerobic exercise to skeletal muscle disfunctions in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension are not well understood yet. This minireview highlights the pathways involved in skeletal muscle adaptations to aerobic exercise training in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The effects of voluntary running on the skeletal muscle of rats with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) were tested in the present study. PAH was induced in rats by a single injection of ...monocrotaline (MCT, 60 mg/kg). Rats in the sedentary hypertension (HS) group had their tolerance to physical exertion reduced throughout the experiment, while those in the sedentary control (SC), exercise control (EC), exercise hypertension (EH) and median exercise (EM) groups maintained or increased. Despite that, the muscular citrate synthase activity was not different between groups. The survival time was higher in the EH (32 days) than in the SH (28 days) (
= 0.0032). SH and EH groups showed a lower percentage of muscle fiber and a higher percentage of extracellular matrix compared to control groups (
< 0.0001). However, the EM and EH groups presented higher percentage of muscle fiber and lower percentage of extracellular matrix than SH group (
< 0.0001). Regarding muscular gene expression, the SH and EM groups showed a lower expression of PGC1-α (
= 0.0024) and a higher expression of VEGF (
= 0.0033) compared to SC, while PGC1-α was elevated in the EH. No difference between groups was found for the carbonylated protein levels (
> 0.05), while the TNF-α/IL-10 ratio was augmented in the EH (
= 0.0277). In conclusion, voluntary running augments the proportion of fiber and affects the gene expression of inflammatory and mitochondrial biogenesis' markers in the skeletal muscle of rats with MCT-induced PAH, which benefits their survival and tolerance to physical effort.
Resumo Fundamento A hipertrofia e a dilatação do ventrículo direito observadas na hipertensão arterial pulmonar (HAP) prejudicam a dinâmica do ventrículo esquerdo (VE) achatando o septo ...interventricular. Objetivo Investigar se o treinamento físico resistido (TFR) de intensidade baixa a moderada é benéfico para funções contráteis do VE e de cardiomiócitos em ratos durante o desenvolvimento de HAP induzida por monocrotalina (MCT). Métodos Foram usados ratos Wistar machos (Peso corporal: ~ 200 g). Para avaliar o tempo até o possível surgimento de insuficiência cardíaca (ou seja, ponto de desfecho), os ratos foram divididos em dois grupos, hipertensão com sedentarismo até a insuficiência (HSI, n=6) e hipertensão com treinamento até a insuficiência (HTI, n=6). Para testar os efeitos do TFR, os ratos foram divididos entre grupos de controle sedentários (CS, n=7), hipertensão com sedentarismo (HS, n=7) e hipertensão com treinamento (HT, n=7). A HAP foi induzida por duas injeções de MCT (20 mg/kg, com um intervalo de 7 dias). Os grupos com treinamento foram submetidos a um protocolo de TFR (subir escadas; 55-65% da máxima carga carregada), 5 dias por semana. A significância estatística foi definida em p <0,05. Resultados O TFR prolongou o ponto de desfecho (~25%), melhorou a tolerância ao esforço físico (~55%) e atenuou as disfunções de contratilidade de VE e de cardiomiócitos promovidas pela MCT preservando a fração de ejeção e o encurtamento fracional, a amplitude do encurtamento, e as velocidades de contração e relaxamento nos cardiomiócitos. O TFR também preveniu os aumentos de fibrose e colágeno tipo I no ventrículo esquerdo causados pela MCT, além de manter as dimensões de miócitos e colágeno tipo III reduzidas por MCT. Conclusão O TFR de intensidade baixa a moderada é benéfico para funções contráteis de VE e cardiomiócitos em ratos durante o desenvolvimento de HAP induzida por MCT.
We tested the effects of low-intensity endurance training (LIET) on the structural and mechanical properties of right (RV) and left ventricular (LV) myocytes. Male Wistar rats (4 mo old) were ...randomly divided into control (C, n = 7) and trained (T, n = 7, treadmill running at 50-60% of maximal running speed for 8 wk) groups. Isolated ventricular myocyte dimensions, contractility, Ca(2+) transients {intracellular Ca(2+) concentration (Ca(2+)i)}, and ventricular Ca(2+)i regulatory proteins were measured. LIET augmented cell length (C, 152.5 ± 2.0 μm vs. T, 162.2 ± 2.1 μm; P < 0.05) and volume (C, 5,162 ± 131 μm(3) vs. T, 5,506 ± 132 μm(3); P < 0.05) in the LV but not in the RV. LIET increased cell shortening (C, 7.5 ± 0.3% vs. T, 8.6 ± 0.3%; P < 0.05), the Ca(2+)i transient amplitude (C, 2.49 ± 0.06 F/F0 vs. T, 2.82 ± 0.06 F/F0; P < 0.05), the expression of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase 2a (C, 1.07 ± 0.13 vs. T, 1.59 ± 0.12; P < 0.05), and the levels of phosphorylated phospholamban at serine 16 (C, 0.99 ± 0.11 vs. T, 1.34 ± 0.10; P < 0.05), and reduced the total phospholamban-to-sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase 2a ratio (C, 1.19 ± 0.15 vs. T, 0.40 ± 0.16; P < 0.05) in the LV without changing such parameters in the RV. In conclusion, LIET affected the structure and improved the mechanical properties of LV but not of RV myocytes in rats, helping to characterize the functional and morphological changes that accompany the endurance training-induced cardiac remodeling.
Abstract The present study investigated the effects of aerobic physical training on the femoral morphological, densitometric and biomechanical properties in growing male rats subjected to ...protein-based malnutrition. Four-week-old male Wistar rats were randomized into groups of 10 animals: Control Sedentary (CS), Control Trained (CT), Malnourished Sedentary (MS) and Malnourished Trained (MT). Control and malnourished animals received diets with 12% protein and 6% protein, respectively. The trained groups were submitted to a treadmill running program for 8 weeks. Total proteins and albumin were analyzed in the animals' blood plasma. Histological, densitometric and biomechanical analyzes were performed on the animals' femur. Body mass gain, physical performance, biochemical markers and the femoral morphological, densitometric and biomechanical properties were determined. Exercise tolerance increased in trained groups. Malnourished animals exhibited lower serum protein and albumin levels than controls. Porosity and trabecular bone density were not different between groups. The femoral maximum load, maximum load until fracture, resilience, stiffness, tenacity and densitometric properties were reduced by malnutrition. Physical training associated with malnutrition exacerbated the impairment in the femoral maximum load, maximum load until fracture, bone mineral content and density. Aerobic physical training worsens the damages induced by protein-based malnutrition in the femoral biomechanical and densitometric properties of growing male rats.
O objetivo desse estudo foi comparar a vantagem em casa (VC) entre Copa Libertadores da América (CLA) e UEFA Champions League (UCL). Foram analisadas todas as partidas da fase de grupos (n = 1536) ...das temporadas 2004 a 2011. Para quantificar a VC, foi utilizada a metodologia de aproveitamento percentual de pontos proposta por POLLARD3, sendo considerado VC valores maiores que 50%. Houve diferença significativa (p = 0,010) para a VC na CLA (67,8 ± 4%) em relação a UCL (60,5 ± 5%). A magnitude das diferenças das médias (diferença média = 0,73; IC 95%: 0,020 a 0,127) foi grande (h2 = 0,35). Conclui-se que a VC foi maior na CLA do que na UCL nas temporadas analisadas e que fatores como altitude, distância de viagem, característica das torcidas e comportamento arbitral poderá ajudar a explicar esse fenômeno em futuros estudos.
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at evaluating acute and chronic effects of physical exercise on IgA and IgG levels, as well as its relationship with the susceptibility to develop upper ...respiratory tract infections (URTI). This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted and reported in accordance with PRISMA statement. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE was performed in July 2020. This systematic review and meta-analysis included studies in which participants performed acute exercise or chronic physical training and were subjected to analyses of URTI incidence and concentrations of IgA and IgG. The selected studies for systematic review were divided into the following three groups: (I) trials that evaluated the effects of acute exercise in sedentary subjects, (II) trials that evaluated the effects of acute exercise in athletes/trained individuals, and (III) trials that evaluated the effects of chronic physical training on the incidence of URTI, as well as on the levels of IgA and IgG. Acute exercise increases the IgA levels in trained subjects but does not affect its levels in untrained subjects. Such increase in IgA levels induced by acute exercise is greater in trained individual that performed ultramarathon. On the other hand, chronic physical training reduces IgA levels in both trained and untrained subjects, does not change IgA levels in non-military subjects, besides from not affecting IgG levels. The present systematic review and meta-analysis indicates that acute exercise positively influences IgA levels in trained individuals, being this effect pronounced when a strenuous exercise such as ultramarathon is executed. Chronic physical training, in turn, does not affect IgG levels.

As diferenças entre as exigências físicas e técnicas dos jogos também podem influenciar quais aspectos antropométricos seriam mais importantes para a seleção da equipe nacional. Objetivo: Este estudo teve por objetivo descrever e comparar o perfil antropométrico de jogadores de futebol da categoria sub 15 ao profissional da Seleção Brasileira de Futebol. Métodos: A amostra consistiu de 673 jogadores das seguintes categorias: sub 15 (U15) sub 17 (U17) sub 20 (U20) sub 23 (U23) e profissional (PRO). Medidas da estatura massa corporal e soma das sete dobras cutâneas do banco de dados da Confederação Brasileira de Futebol entre 2013 e 2021 foram utilizadas para descrever o perfil antropométrico dos jogadores. Os jogadores foram agrupados de acordo com as categorias posição de jogo e aqueles que foram selecionados ou não selecionados. Resultados: Como esperado os resultados indicam que a massa corporal aumenta com a idade e estabiliza a partir da categoria U23. A massa corporal e a soma das sete dobras cutâneas aumentam dentro da categoria U15 (U15.1 vs. U15.2) enquanto a estatura e a massa corporal aumentam dentro da categoria U17 (U17.1 vs. U17.2). Os zagueiros e laterais estabilizam a massa corporal e a estatura antes do U17 enquanto os meio campistas atacantes e goleiros estabilizam a massa corporal posteriormente com os meio campistas e atacantes no U20 e goleiros no U23. Os goleiros e os zagueiros foram os jogadores que apresentaram maior estatura e massa corporal comparados às outras posições em todas as categorias. Os jogadores selecionados e não-selecionados nas diferentes categorias apresentam perfil antropométrico semelhante. Conclusão: Baseando-se nos resultados há uma diversidade no perfil antropométrico dentro das posições e uma diferença na maturação de acordo com as posições dos jogadores. Este estudo pode ser utilizado por treinadores preparadores físicos e cientistas do esporte como dados normativos sobre o perfil antropométrico das seleções masculinas do futebol brasileiro estabelecendo um benchmark. Los jugadores se agruparon según los tramos de edad oficiales, la posición de juego y los seleccionados y no seleccionados. Resultados: Como era de esperar, los resultados indican que la masa corporal aumenta con la edad y se estanca a partir de la categoría U23. La masa corporal y la suma de 7 pliegues cutáneos aumentan dentro de la categoría U15 (U15.1 vs. U15.2), mientras que la estatura y la masa corporal aumentan dentro de la U17 (U17.1 vs. U17.2). Los defensas centrales y los laterales estabilizan antes la masa corporal y la estatura a partir de la U17, mientras que los mediocampistas, delanteros y porteros estabilizan la masa corporal más tarde, con los mediocampistas y delanteros en la U20 y los porteros en la U23. Los porteros y defensas centrales fueron los grupos que mostraron mayor estatura y masa corporal respecto a otras posiciones en todos los tramos de edad.
