Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the main causative agents of foot, hand and mouth disease. Its infection usually causes severe central nervous system diseases and complications in infected infants ...and young children. In the present study, we demonstrated that EV71 infection caused the rearrangement of vimentin in human astrocytoma cells. The rearranged vimentin, together with various EV71 components, formed aggresomes-like structures in the perinuclear region. Electron microscopy and viral RNA labeling indicated that the aggresomes were virus replication sites since most of the EV71 particles and the newly synthesized viral RNA were concentrated here. Further analysis revealed that the vimentin in the virus factories was serine-82 phosphorylated. More importantly, EV71 VP1 protein is responsible for the activation of calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK-II) which phosphorylated the N-terminal domain of vimentin on serine 82. Phosphorylation of vimentin and the formation of aggresomes were required for the replication of EV71 since the latter was decreased markedly after phosphorylation was blocked by KN93, a CaMK-II inhibitor. Thus, as one of the consequences of CaMK-II activation, vimentin phosphorylation and rearrangement may support virus replication by playing a structural role for the formation of the replication factories. Collectively, this study identified the replication centers of EV71 in human astrocyte cells. This may help us understand the replication mechanism and pathogenesis of EV71 in human.

Nine coumarins including a pair of new enantiomers (1a/1b) and seven known compounds (2–8) were isolated from Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai. Among them, compounds 1a and 1b were naturally occurring ...coumarin‐phenylpropanoid conjugate enantiomers. Their structures were identified by NMR and ECD calculations. Compounds 1–8 were tested for acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibiting activity. The results of the enzymology experiment showed that compound 3 demonstrated obvious AchE inhibitory activity which showed the IC50 value of 1.982±0.003 μM, and the binding sites were predicted by molecular docking.

We continue the study of a novel relation between quantum periods and TBA(Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz)-like difference equations, generalize previous works to a large class of Calabi-Yau ...geometries described by three-term quantum operators. We give two methods to derive the TBA-like equations. One method uses only elementary functions while the other method uses Faddeev’s quantum dilogarithm function. The two approaches provide different realizations of TBA-like equations which are nevertheless related to the same quantum period.

, CC) is an economically and ecologically important fish in Asia. It can adapt to extremely high alkalinity, providing us with valuable material to understand the adaptation mechanism for extreme environmental stress. However, the information on the metabolite biomarkers and metabolic mechanisms of CC exposed to alkaline stress is not entirely clear. We applied high-throughput UPLC-Q-TOF/MS combined with chemometrics to identify changes in the metabolome of CC exposed to different concentrations of alkalinity for long term effects. Metabolic differences among alkalinity-treated groups were identified by multivariate statistical analysis. Further, 7 differential metabolites were found after exposure to alkaline conditions. In total, 23 metabolic pathways of these differential metabolites were significantly affected. Alkalinity exposure resulted in widespread change in metabolic profiles in the plasma with disruptions in the phenylalanine metabolism, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, tyrosine metabolism,

= 4 super-Yang-Mills theory. ...In this paper, we continue the studies of higher genus free BMN correlators with more stringy modes, mostly focusing on the case of genus one and four stringy modes in different transverse directions. Surprisingly, we find that the non-negativity of torus two-point functions, which is a consequence of a previously proposed probability interpretation and has been verified in the cases with two and three stringy modes, is no longer true for the case of four or more stringy modes. Nevertheless, the factorization formula, which is also a proposed holographic dictionary relating the torus two-point function to a string diagram calculation, is still valid. We also check the correspondence of planar three-point functions with Green-Schwarz string vertex with many string modes. We discuss some issues in the case of multiple stringy modes in the same transverse direction. Our calculations provide some new perspectives on pp-wave holography.

The spatial patterns of biodiversity and their underlying mechanisms have been an active area of research for a long time. In this study, a total of 63 samples (20m × 30m) were systematically ...established along elevation gradients on Mount Tai and Mount Lao, China. We explored altitudinal patterns of plant diversity in the two mountain systems. In order to understand the mechanisms driving current diversity patterns, we used phylogenetic approaches to detect the spatial patterns of phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic structure along two elevation gradients. We found that total species richness had a monotonically decreasing pattern and tree richness had a unimodal pattern along the elevation gradients in the two study areas. However, altitudinal patterns in shrub richness and herbs richness were not consistent on the two mountains. At low elevation, anthropogenic disturbances contributed to the increase of plant diversity, especially for shrubs and herbs in understory layers, which are more sensitive to changes in microenvironment. The phylogenetic structure of plant communities exhibited an inverted hump-shaped pattern along the elevation gradient on Mount Tai, which demonstrates that environmental filtering is the main driver of plant community assembly at high and low elevations and inter-specific competition may be the main driver of plant community assembly in the middle elevations. However, the phylogenetic structure of plant communities did not display a clear pattern on Mount Lao where the climate is milder. Phylogenetic beta diversity and species beta diversity consistently increased with increasing altitudinal divergence in the two study areas. However, the altitudinal patterns of species richness did not completely mirror phylogenetic diversity patterns. Conservation areas should be selected taking into consideration the preservation of high species richness, while maximizing phylogenetic diversity to improve the potential for diversification in the future.

Piper nigrum is a popular crop that can be used as seasoning or as an additive but its active ingredients also have an effect on the nervous system. Nineteen new amide alkaloids (1a/1b, 2–5, 6a/6b, ...7, 8a/8b, 9, 10a/10b, 11a–11b, 12–14) were isolated from P. nigrum, guided by inhibitory activity of AChE and LC–MS/MS based on GNPS. The configurations were determined by extensive spectral analysis, Bulkiness rule, and NMR calculations. The inhibitory activities of AChE/BuChE and Aβ aggregation were tested, and the results showed compounds 2, 7, and 12 had significant inhibitory activities. These components were identified in the crude fraction and their relative quantities were tested, which suggested that compound 2 was the index component in the active site from P. nigrum.
