We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO and Virgo detectors between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010: data are analyzed when at least two of ...the three LIGO-Virgo detectors are in coincident operation, with a total observation time of 207 days. The analysis searches for transients of duration <, ~ 1 s over the frequency band 64-5000 Hz, without other assumptions on the signal waveform, polarization, direction or occurrence time. All identified events are consistent with the expected accidental background. We set frequentist upper limits on the rate of gravitational-wave bursts by combining this search with the previous LIGO-Virgo search on the data collected between November 2005 and October 2007. The upper limit on the rate of strong gravitational-wave bursts at the Earth is 1.3 events per year at 90% confidence. We also present upper limits on source rate density per year and Mpc super(3) for sample populations of standard-candle sources. As in the previous joint run, typical sensitivities of the search in terms of the root-sum-squared strain amplitude for these waveforms lie in the range ~ 5 x 10 super(-22) Hz super(-1/2) to ~ 1 x 10 super(-20) Hz super(-1/2). The combination of the two joint runs entails the most sensitive all-sky search for generic gravitational-wave bursts and synthesizes the results achieved by the initial generation of interferometric detectors.

We present the results of a directed search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown, isolated neutron stars in the Galactic center region, performed on two years of data from LIGO's fifth ...science run from two LIGO detectors. The search uses a semicoherent approach, analyzing coherently 630 segments, each spanning 11.5 hours, and then incoherently combining the results of the single segments. It covers gravitational wave frequencies in a range from 78 to 496 Hz and a frequency-dependent range of first-order spindown values down to -7.86 x 10 super(-8) Hz /s at the highest frequency. No gravitational waves were detected. The 90% confidence upper limits on the gravitational wave amplitude of sources at the Galactic center are ~ 3.35 x 10 super(-25) for frequencies near 150 Hz. These upper limits are the most constraining to date for a large-parameter-space search for continuous gravitational wave signals.

We report a search for gravitational waves from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary black holes (BBH) with total mass between 25 and 100 solar masses, in data taken at the LIGO and Virgo ...observatories between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010. The maximum sensitive distance of the detectors over this period for a (20, 20)M sub(middot in circle) coalescence was 300 Mpc. No gravitational wave signals were found. We thus report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of BBH as a function of the component masses for nonspinning components, and also evaluate the dependence of the search sensitivity on component spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum. We find an upper limit at 90% confidence on the coalescence rate of BBH with nonspinning components of mass between 19 and 28M sub(middot in circle) of 3.3 x 10 super(-7) mergers Mpc super(-3) yr super(-1).

In der Vergangenheit variierte das Überleben der betroffenen Kinder bis zum 5. Lebensjahr (Norwood-Stage-III-Operation eingeschlossen) zwischen 50 % und 65 %. Aktuelle Berechnungen gehen davon aus, dass heute 80 % der Neugeborenen mit HLHS das Erwachsenenalter erreichen werden. Obwohl die klassische 3‑Stufen-Palliation zur Behandlung des HLHS etabliert ist, gibt es dennoch signifikante Unterschiede bezüglich des chirurgischen Vorgehens zwischen den Zentren. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird eine mögliche operative Technik (Norwood-Stage-I-Operation) zur Palliation des HLHS vorgestellt.

The purpose of this study was to examine the ways that parents respond to their children's oral reading errors when reading books together. Twenty-three middle-class parents were audiotaped in their ...homes listening to their grade one children read. Parental behaviors following all reading miscues were coded. Data analyses revealed that parents ignored only 4% of their children's miscues. Parents, who indicated in a questionnaire that they held a more bottom-up view of reading, less often supplied the miscued word, more often encouraged the child to try the word again, more often gave graphophonemic help, and tended less often to highlight context clues than parents holding a top-down view. Regardless of parental approach to reading, the more accurately children read, the less parents ignored miscues, the less they offered picture clues, and the more they directed their children's attention to individual letters and tended to give sound clues to assist word recognition.

We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 50-800 Hz and with the frequency time derivative in the range of 0 through -6 x 10 super(-9) Hz/s. Such a signal ...could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. After recent improvements in the search program that yielded a 10 x increase in computational efficiency, we have searched in two years of data collected during LIGO's fifth science run and have obtained the most sensitive all-sky upper limits on gravitational-wave strain to date. Near 150 Hz our upper limit on worst-case linearly polarized strain amplitude h sub(0) is 1 x 10 super(-24), while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 3.8 x 10 super(-24) for all polarizations and sky locations. These results constitute a factor of 2 improvement upon previously published data. A new detection pipeline utilizing a loosely coherent algorithm was able to follow up weaker outliers, increasing the volume of space where signals can be detected by a factor of 10, but has not revealed any gravitational-wave signals. The pipeline has been tested for robustness with respect to deviations from the model of an isolated neutron star, such as caused by a low-mass or long-period binary companion.

T-wave alternans (TWA) is a harbinger of ventricular vulnerability and an important prognostic indicator for torsade de pointes and likely sudden death in patients with LQTS. We analyzed the ...occurrence of TWA in 18 patients with LQTS (7 males, 11 females, ages ranging from 6 months to 32 yearsmdash median 8.4 years). Analysis was performed with software to investigate dynamics of cycle length mediated repolarization changes. Digital Holter ECG analysis revealed macroscopic, true TWA in 3 of 18 patients. TWA showed a variable morphological expression. One patient had continuous changes of T wave polarity, but not on a periodic beat-to-beat basis. Onsets of macroscopic TWA were preceded by long/short cycle length sequences and tachycardic rates above 130 to 140 bpm. Impact of ventricular premature beats on TWA onset was insignificant. Two of the identified patients with TWA had sudden cardiac death during follow-up (one refused PM therapy). At present, TWA cannot be detected automatically from Holter ECGs and therefore may be missed, despite the potential danger for the individuals. The observation that predominantly high beat rates and not beat rate changes, per se, triggered episodes of TWA renders difficult general therapeutic recommendations for the identified patients at risk.

This paper reports on an unmodeled, all-sky search for gravitational waves from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHB). The search was performed on data from the second joint science ...run of the LIGO and Virgo detectors (July 2009-October 2010) and was sensitive to IMBHBs with a range up to ~200 Mpc, averaged over the possible sky positions and inclinations of the binaries with respect to the line of sight. No significant candidate was found. Upper limits on the coalescence-rate density of nonspinning IMBHBs with total masses between 100 and 450 M sub(middot in circle) and mass ratios between 0.25 and 1 were placed by combining this analysis with an analogous search performed on data from the first LIGO-Virgo joint science run (November 2005-October 2007). The most stringent limit was set for systems consisting of two 88 M sub(middot in circle) black holes and is equal to 0.12 Mpc super(-3) Myr super(-1) at the 90% confidence level. This paper also presents the first estimate, for the case of an unmodeled analysis, of the impact on the search range of IMBHB spin configurations: the visible volume for IMBHBs with nonspinning components is roughly doubled for a population of IMBHBs with spins aligned with the binary's orbital angular momentum and uniformly distributed in the dimensionless spin parameter up to 0.8, whereas an analogous population with antialigned spins decreases the visible volume by ~20%.
