Myrtus communis
leaf extract (ME) (300 mg/kg bw) against hepatotoxicity induced by monosodium glutamate (MSG) (100 mg/kg bw), and acrylamide (ACR) (20 mg/kg bw) in male rats and determining its molecular and cellular mechanisms. The data showed that the treatment with MSG and/or ACR induced significant changes in numerous biomarkers (Bcl-2 and the programmed cell death protein-1) related to liver damage, as recorded by genotoxicity, apoptosis, and histopathological changes. On the other side, the oral administration of ME (300 mg/kg bw) improved the hepatic conditions as confirmed by the improvement in cell viability, programmed cell death, and histopathological alterations. It can be concluded that the consumption of ME might be useful for minimizing the occurred hepatotoxicity through up-regulation of the key apoptotic regulators as well as the improvement of DNA content and cell cycle restoration.

Nowadays, the ...application of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSCs-Exs) as the main cell-free therapy for diabetes treatment is becoming more and more extensive. In non-autologous therapy, researchers are moving towards a new strategy based on loading MSC-Exs with certain drugs, aimed at maintaining and maximizing the function of exosomes at the function site and enhancing their efficiency and safety. This study aims to explore and compare the therapeutic potentialities of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSCs-Exs) loaded with either selenium (Se) or nano selenium (NSe), a natural antioxidant micronutrient, in the management of T1DM in rats. In our 4-week experiment, six rat groups were included, namely, control, Ex+Se, Ex+NSe, STZ-diabetic (D), D+ Ex+Se, and D+Ex+NSe groups. Both diabetic-treated groups showed marked pancreatic regenerative antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic capacities, with the D+Ex+NSe injection showing superiority in managing diabetes hazards, as evidenced by various biochemical and histological assessments.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer. Because curcumin (CUR) has anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, research has been undertaken to indicate that nanocurcumin compounds can be ...used to treat a variety of cancers. CUR in nanoform has been found to have a stronger effect than conventional CUR. The purpose of this study was to show that CUR-loaded poly lactic-co-glycolic acid nanoparticles (PLGA) (CUR-loaded PLGA) have anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects on colon carcinogenesis in male dimethyl hydrazine (DMH) mice as a comparative study between the nanoform of curcumin and normal curcumin, focusing on the anticancer effect of nanocurcumin. Mice were separated into six groups: No treatment was given to Group I (negative Group-I). Group II was treated with CUR. Group III was treated with CUR-loaded PLGA. Group IV was treated with DMH. Group V received DMH and curcumin. Group VI received DMH and CUR-loaded PLGA. At the conclusion of the trial, the animals were slain (6 weeks). Inflammatory indicators and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels all changed significantly in this study, as the following inflammatory markers as TNF showed percent of change compared to the DMH group. Recovery percentage for Groups V and VI, respectively, were 9.18 and 55.31%. In addition, IL1 was 7.45 and 50.37% for Groups V and VI, respectively. The results of IL6 were 4.86 and 25.79% for Groups V and VI, respectively. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) recovery percent was 16.98 and 45.12% for Groups V and VI, respectively. Following the effect of DMH on colon mucosa shape, the researchers looked at the effect of CUR-loaded PLGA on colon histology. It was shown that CUR-loaded PLGA affects the cell cycle and PCNA expression. We conclude that nanocurcumin is an important anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting agent.
The health benefits of thymoquinone (TQ) have been a significant focus of numerous studies. However, more research is needed to ascertain whether its nano-form can effectively treat or prevent ...chronic diseases. In this study, we investigated how thymoquinone and its nanoparticles can mitigate liver damage induced by diazinon in male Wistar rats and explored the intracellular mechanisms involved. Forty-two Wistar male rats (n = 42) were randomly allotted into seven groups. Group 1 served as the control. Group 2 (vehicle) consisted of rats that received corn oil via a gastric tube daily. In Group 3 (TQ), rats were given a daily oral administration of TQ (40 mg/kg bw). Group 4 (thymoquinone nanoparticles, NTQ) included rats that received NTQ (0.5 mg/kg bw) orally for 21 days. Group 5 (DZN) involved rats that were administered diazinon (DZN, 15 mg/kg bw) orally. In Group 6 (TQ + DZN), rats first received TQ orally, followed by DZN. Group 7 (NTQ + DZN) consisted of rats receiving NTQ orally, then DZN. After 21 days of treatment, the rats were euthanized. After oral administration of DZN, liver enzymes were significantly elevated (p < 0.05). Additionally, there were noticeable increases in oxidative injury markers, such as nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, redox oxygen radicals, and overall increases in hydrogen peroxide and liver protein carbonyl concentrations. This was accompanied by the upregulation of apoptotic markers (Bax, caspase9, caspase 3, bax/Bcl2 ratio), inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), and DNA damage. There was also a noteworthy decrease (p < 0.05) in the activities of antioxidant enzymes and anti-apoptotic markers. However, the oral administration of thymoquinone or its nanoparticle form mitigated these diazinon complications; our histopathological findings corroborated our biochemical and molecular observations. In conclusion, the significant antioxidant properties of thymoquinone, or its nanoparticle form, in tandem with the downregulation of apoptotic markers and inflammatory cytokines, provided a protective effect against hepatic dysfunction caused by diazinon.
Water shortage is a major environmental stress that destructively impacts maize production, particularly in arid regions. Therefore, improving irrigation management and increasing productivity per ...unit of water applied are needed, especially under the rising temperature and precipitation fluctuations induced by climate change. Laboratory and field trials were carried out in the present study, which were aimed at assessing the possibility of promoting maize germination, growth, grain yield and crop water productivity (CWP) using seed priming under different irrigation regimes. Two seed priming treatments, i.e., hydro-priming and hardening versus unprimed seeds, were applied under four irrigation regimes, i.e., 120, 100, 80 and 60% of estimated crop evapotranspiration (ETc). The obtained results indicated that increasing irrigation water from 100% up to 120% ETc did not significantly increase grain yield or contributing traits, while it decreased CWP. Deficit irrigation of 80 and 60% ETc gradually decreased grain yield and all attributed traits. Seed priming significantly ameliorated seedlings’ vigor as indicated by earlier germination, higher germination percentage, longer roots and shoots, and heavier fresh and dry weight than unprimed seeds with the superiority of hardening treatment. Additionally, under field conditions, seed priming significantly increased grain yield, yield contributing traits and CWP compared with unprimed treatment. Interestingly, the results reflect the role of seed priming, particularly hardening, in mitigating negative impacts of drought stress and enhancing maize growth, grain yield and attributed traits as well as CWP under deficit irrigation conditions. This was demonstrated by a significant increase in grain yield and CWP under moderate drought and severe drought conditions compared with unprimed treatment. These results highlight that efficient irrigation management and seed priming can increase maize yield and water productivity in arid environments.
Background
Regarding risk stratification of intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism, data are still not sufficient. Transthoracic echocardiography parameters may be useful in risk evaluation in those ...patients. Some novel echocardiographic indices mainly tricuspid regurgitation peak gradient (TRPG), pulmonary artery acceleration time, and tricuspid annulus plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) were evaluated showing that they may be used for risk stratification of normotensive cases with acute pulmonary embolism (APE).
Results
The studied cases were subdivided into two classes:
Class I with intermediate-low-risk pulmonary embolism included 32 patients (53.3%) and class II with intermediate high-risk pulmonary embolism involved 28 cases (46.7%). Dyspnea, tachypnea, troponin level, RVD, RVD/LVD, TR velocity, and TRPG/TAPSE were statistically higher in cases of class II than that of class I (
p
< 0.001). On the other hand, TAPSE and PA acceleration time were markedly lower in the case of class II than that of class I (
p
< 0.001). Ten cases (35.7%) of group II required thrombolytic agents with a significant difference (
p
<0.001).
Conclusions
RVD/LVD ratio, TAPSE, TRPG/TAPSE ratio, and PA acceleration time are echocardiographic parameters that might be helpful for risk stratification of cases with moderate-risk pulmonary embolism. The addition of elevated levels of cardiac troponins to imaging and clinical findings can improve PE-related risk identification.

In line with the requirements of the Egyptian government to find a solution for wheat transportation during the peak harvesting season, an innovative design for a grain cart with a capacity of 8 tons ...supplemented with a grain hopper, a lifting double-action pneumatic conveyor, and a built-in digital scale was tested and evaluated to facilitate the transport of wheat crops from farmers' fields to storage sites. The cart was manufactured in the workshop of a local industrial company. It was tested under varying operational conditions in different wheat production areas in terms of working performance, efficiency of the grain loading and unloading mechanism, precision of the grain weighing mechanism, and cost/ton. The cart will enable wheat farmers and traders to transport and deliver their crops easily to storage sites with minimal losses and maximum working efficiency. It will also increase farmers’ profit because transportation cost by using this grain cart is less than that of the current conventional method. Moreover, the developed cart can secure wheat supply in government storage sites without any interruption during the peak wheat harvesting season.

Wheat still suffers from the problem of traditional storage methods, limited storage capacity, and a high percentage of losses in terms of quantity and quality. Hermetic silo bags are economical and ...alternative technique to the traditional storage methods. Ten horizontal plastic silos with the capacity of 200 tons/silo were tested and evaluated for eight months of wheat storage. The evaluations included grain bulk temperature, CO2 concentration, fungal and microbial count, insect count, grain moisture content, 1000-grain weight, falling number, and protein content. The results showed that the stored wheat quality was maintained without any significant difference during the storage period in terms of 1000-grain weight, grain moisture content, and falling number, while there were slight changes in protein content and kernel hardness with a decrease of 5.5% and 4.6% at the end of the storage period. There were no statistically significant differences at the sampling location along the length of the storage silos, which confirms the homogeneity of the internal conditions of the examined silo. The grain bulk temperature inside the silos was always lower than the surrounding ambient air temperature. The higher concentration of carbon dioxide inside the silos during the storage period led to a decrease in fungal and microbial count and the presence of dead insects at the end of the storage period.

Abstract
Context
Exudative pleural effusion is a diagnostic dilemma that includes many steps; one of them is obtaining a definite diagnosis through pleural biopsy.
Cryoprobes are being increasingly ...used for obtaining larger specimens with fewer crush artifacts. However, the safety and feasibility of cryoprobe biopsy compared with standard forceps for pleural biopsy have not been fully assessed.
Aims
To evaluate the diagnostic value, size, and quality of the specimens obtained by flexible cryoprobe in comparison with those obtained by flexible forceps probe during medical thoracoscopy in patients with exudative pleural effusion and to assess the possible complications from the procedure.
Settings and design
This interventional prospective study was carried out at the endoscopy unit at Chest Department and Tuberculosis Assiut University Hospital.
Patients and methods
This study included 60 patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural effusion. Medical thoracoscopy was carried out for all the patients, and pleural biopsies were taken from the parietal pleura using a conventional rigid forceps probe and flexible cryoprobe in the same settings.
Results
Cryoprobe biopsy established a definite diagnosis in 55/60, with 91.6% diagnostic yield, whereas forceps biopsy had a definite diagnosis in 53/60, with 88.3% diagnostic yield.
The size of cryoprobe biopsy was significantly larger in comparison with the forceps biopsy (26.56 ± 22.16 vs. 17.38 ± 12.08 mm

<0.001). The depth of pleural biopsy was evaluated by the presence of extrapleural fat cells, which were significantly higher in cryoprobe biopsy in comparison with forceps biopsy 21 (35%) vs. 11 (18.3%);

=0.03. There were no significant complications or procedure-related deaths.
Conclusions
Cryobiopsy is a possible safe and effective alternative to conventional forceps probe biopsy in the diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion with a larger, deeper, and less number of biopsies. It was also found that cryoprobe biopsy had a better diagnostic yield, sensitivity, and accuracy.
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of rTMS in treating sleep disorders in PD. It included 24 patients with PD who had sleep disorders. Group allocations (active or sham with a ratio of 2:1) ...were placed in serially numbered closed envelopes. Each patient was evaluated with the following: MDS-UPDRS, Parkinson’s Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and polysomnography (PSG) before and 10 days after the treatment sessions. Each session consisted of 10 trains, 20 Hz, 10 sec for each, over the parietal cortex (bilaterally). Scores of UPDRS, BDI, and PDSS improved significantly in the active group but not in the sham group. The PSG data showed that sleep onset and rapid eye movement (REM) latencies (min), REM duration, and time spent awake (both as %TST) were improved after rTMS in the active group compared with the sham group. The number of awakenings, the wake-after-sleep onset index, the arousal index, and periodic leg movements (PLMs) were all significantly reduced in the active group but not in the sham group. Ten sessions of 20 Hz rTMS over parietal cortexes improved sleep quality and PLMs in patients with PD. The improvement in PSG and PDSS were correlated with improvements in UPDRS and BDI scores.
